What is Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

Howard Trachtman, MD, Pediatric Nephrologist at NYU Langone Health provides an overview of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
FSGS is a heterogeneous kidney disorder best defined as glomerular histopathology. Patients with FSGS typically present with a variable degree of proteinuria and often nephrotic syndrome.
Currently, treatment often includes corticosteroids or other immunomodulating agents aimed to reduce proteinuria but new treatments, such as sparsentan are in development. Dr. Trachtman urges clinicians to refer their patients suspected of having FSGS to a specialty clinic so that the patient can receive proper care.

I was diagnosed when I was 12/13 years old. Within 6 months both my kidneys were taken out. On dialysis for 4 years then received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor. Two years ago my husband and I tried to get pregnant but it didn’t work out I went into rejection and had to do plasmapheresis and IVIG. I’m 37 now and still doing well, I have stage 3 failure now. Doing my labs more often and my Cellcept has been doubled from 250mg a day to 500mg a day. Overall I love my life and feel very lucky for everything I have. Thank you for all your videos👍
