I love this conversation! It's so fascinating to research the folk practices and magick found from region to region. It's amazing to see how different AND similar they can be! Thank you so much for this.

Yes exactly thats what I especially love is being able to almost ‘track’ how a believe or practice was spread across a continent and how it is then different/similar from area to area!

Since you mention Frau Holle and fairy tales, the fairy tale of Rumpelstielzchen, where the miller's daughter is supposed to spin straw into gold, possibly has roots in a myth of the Egyptian goddess Isis, who is also locked up in a tower and is supposed to spin straw into gold. Sounds strange at first, how does an Egyptian goddess end up in a fairy tale by Grimm, a German fairy tale. But it makes total sense, because the Romans brought Isis to the entire Roman Empire, including parts of Germany. That's a nice example of how stories and traditions spread and mix.

High magic = theurgy (spiritual magic) Low magic = thaumaturgy (practical magic) Ceremonial and folk magic are styles that can be used to practice thaumaturgy and theurgy. The same goes for kitchen magic. Some, like folk magic or kitchen magic, are better suited to thaumaturgy rather than theurgy. A good explanation of the difference between theurgy and thaumaturgy can be found in Amber K's book "True Magick: A Beginner's Guide" Beyond this, a very good video.

It’s so hard in the American Southwest. The traditions, spirits, deities and folk magick of this place are closed practices of Native Americans and Mexican brujas. I try to incorporate the desert into my magick and at the same time, foraging is harmful to our delicate ecosystem, the animals are really dangerous and it can be hard to go outside because of the heat. It’s rough out here 😂

Everything you mentioned is so similar to south Texas. I long for cooler temperatures -- a break from this ki!!ing heat. Makes me wish I were in Britain.

I came to the comments to say the same thing. I love where I live and feel very tied to it; I can’t imagine living anywhere else. But I don’t have any family or ancestral ties (my parents are from the Midwest) and it is very hard to find any information on folklore of the Southwest. My dad’s side of the family immigrated from Finland, but it was never a big part of growing up in my family and obviously the climate, environment, and culture there is different it feels alien. It’s all very muddled.

That was really informative, thank you! I'm Gardnerian with a strong interest in Scottish witchcraft, as I used to live in Glasgow and that's where I was first introduced to all things pagan. But I'm originally from Germany too and I've been back for about 16 years. If you don't mind me asking, how come you're living in Latvia? I spent a year in Riga working as an English teacher, it's such a beautiful city! 😊

great video - may I make a request? Could you please dive deeper in the Bavarian traditional folk magick practices that you mentioned? I spent my youth there, and am half-German, and am trying to reconnect with that part of me on a magickal level. However, it is hard to find any resources about Bavarian folk magick and traditions. Thank you

I am not German but as a historian/theologian/folklorist I know that many libraries have collections of folktales, myths, legends and such from second half of 19th century when it was very popular in Europe to collect these traditions. If you ask a librarian they will help you find these collections (very often kept in archives/storage). Such collection are a gold mine. Wish you luck.

@@EllaHarrison Uhh sehr cool!
