Here's a long-awaited video discussing:
- the elements of Christianity and Catholicism in folk magic
- some resources on Italian folk magic and more information on Catholicism & Christianity in Witchcraft
- why we don't see folk practitioners use the term "witchcraft" historically
- how I use Catholic tools in my practice as an Italian folk practitioner.
A Note via 11:55:
I am aware that the Bible is regarded as a Holy Text, while Mythology is regarded as something open to interpretation and just that - mythology. As a folk witch, I treat the Bible kind of like a mythological text, and am aware that not everyone may do the same. I used the example of mythos vs Bible to show that witches who are pagan rarely take mythology literally but witches outside of Christianity & Catholicism taking verses from the Bible and throwing it into the face of Christian/Catholic witches without the understanding that some Christians & Catholics (especially witches) may not follow the Bible to a tee, like we do with our mythology.
My point/opinion is mostly that I don't think that people should be throwing other people's religious texts or mythologies into other people's faces to prove a point when they are not a part of it. Feel free to disagree.

My Catholic dad has an altar to Guadalupe that he lights candles and incense on and leaves offerings. When I started getting into witchcraft as a teen he was actually excited for me, but told me to learn only curanderismo or other Mexican healing paths that were used within Catholicism because everything else was evil. It's interesting for sure.

As soon as we got home my step dad came to the car and said "Before you even get out of the car Digger (my cat) got hit by a car today and is dead." I said "I know" and my mom just gave me a weird look. I told her I told you so. He told me to shut up and go back to sleep. Which I did not. Sure enough within a few minutes we see a long back up of car lights due to an accident. @@GiniRisinger Thanks for sharing your story with us! You still have such a great memory too! It was a difficult situation for many, I heard that lots of the baby boomers and those before them, most of them couldn't use their gifts either, and this cascaded down onto their families; to us, but now seems to be the healing time for us all. That seems to be a similar experience for a lot of us who had these gifts but at the same time because of the traditions we grew up in, they were suppressed. I went through something similar as well, my memory is so suppressed but by using some healing techniques it helps reignite them. All I remember is people always came to me to help them with different things, and if something bad was going to happen I would refuse to even go out. The messages seem to come up randomly and once in a while as well for me, but appparently with meditation practice it helps us receive them more regularly. It is a unique gift which you cannot force it to tell you things but have to listen instead, and when we have an important message to pass onto others we then receive it. I'm so sorry you too were not listened to, especially as a child, as we release the trauma around it, and also forgive our carers because they didn't know any other way it will help with the healing and reawaken the gifts. There are lots of healing techniques we can use to heal through them, and get back in alignment with our gifts. Most importantly sharing the experience and being listened to helps build up the connection. Really grateful that we have a space we can share. Best wishes with everything, I think you have a wonderful gift and may it flourish beyond your wildest imagination. ✨✨

“Witchcraft” was a label placed on many women (also some men) who often were herbalist, midwives and healers. This was a label given by the church in order to subdue women by using them as an example to other women and girls not to tap into their Feminine Divine. As co-creators with God, this was a very powerful gift. In my 60 years of life, (Crone/Christian/Jewish), I have discovered within myself that I no longer have to please anyone but myself. I can be what I choose to be. Humans are complex and as much as the Puritans, Catholic Church, Evangelical church would like to fit us into tidy “little” boxes, one size doesn’t fit all. I have reconciled who and what I am and VERY comfortable in my own skin and I love myself. My daughter’s do as well.

The vast majority of people killed during the witch trials were not herbalists, midwives, or healers. They were largely just random Christian women. The idea that the witch trials were persecuting folk magic practitioners is rooted in long-debunked 20th century anthropology that proposed a clandestine "witch cult" survival.

When I first heard that Christianity or Catholicism do not mix with witchcraft, I was extremely surprised because here in Latin America is extremely common to see esoteric practices that very much involve saints, Mary and the holy trinity! People are so quick to forget the fact that Christianity and Catholicism aren’t exclusively based on eurocentric views.

If you read the Bible, what you just described is not what Christianity is about. Mixing Christianity With other religions is just making a false god in your own image to worship rather than the one true God. It’s idolatry. It’s idol worship. It’s spiritual perversion. christianity is about God coming to a lost and sinful people and telling them how they can be made right with him and be reunited with him through Jesus Christ. Practicing witchcraft was punishable by death in the Old Testament. This isn’t build a religion. Because you don’t determine reality. You don’t get to determine who God is. Only God does. And he told us who he is and what he did and what he’s going to do. What he told us to do was not practice witchcraft.

I’m a former pastor and now a folk magic practitioner. I’m old now, but my four decades in ministry have convinced that most Christians faith is based much more on generations of folk tradition, and not so much on official theology decided in creedal councils or approved seminaries. I have heard hundreds of people talk about their faith-private, personal conversations. These are church going people who are there most Sundays a month, teach religious education to the children. Any two people may have wildly different understandings of any religious topic, depending on where they grew up, particular ways the local church of their upbringing celebrated holidays, their traumas or good experiences. There is a huge difference between what the Church hierarchies proclaim to be True Religion and the spiritual folkways of the people in the pews. It’s kinda wonderful. I came to the conclusion that, when it gets to the people, it’s all folklore. Story, ritual, celebrations, prayer. All of it. ❤

Hello, I was once in your place going between god and witchcraft. My family is catholic and been raised catholic. We would worship Mary although many it’s not worship but is it . I’m now Christian god has shown me so much. I would do baneful magic and “light” magic. I worked through lunar cycles, back to sender spells, many things that go on and on. The point I was deep into witchcraft and the devil deceived me. I was also into tarot cards and I one time asked the lord for a dream and to answer my question , “why can’t I use tarot cards , I could help others get closer by doing this”. That night I had a dream and it was the last days and everyone was killing each other and I was telling everyone to spread the word before it’s too late. By giving me this dream the lord is saying in the last days no tarot cards no witchcraft will help save others , ONLY GOD. If you are a catholic , that means you believe that he died on the cross for us and Jesus will come, and the rapture will happen. I’m telling you all this because I want to do gods will, help save souls , help those that are lukewarm. I’ve talked to demons , had sleep paralysis, I know how they work, their sneaky and full of lies like the devil. Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other, ye cannot serve god and mammon”. Mammon means evil or idolize other gods. Watch John Ramirez on KZbin , his testimony is amazing and can relate to u. You are not alone god is waiting for you to seek a relationship with him. Find your way to god. The beliefs of the catholic are very pagan and would be similar to witchcraft that I would do. Catholicism is more about the church , Christianity is putting god first , having relationship with him. Don’t make these lukewarm Christians scare you away, ask GOD, ask for a dream on a question you have , put all your faith in knowing he will answer. For he knows your heart . God bless you and feel free to ask me anything .

Thank you so much! As a Christian, I have always been interested in witchcraft even as a kid. I’ve always struggled with the balance, because of course (most) Christians wont accept you for it and (most) witches wont accept you for it either. You’re kind of like the black sheep. But ultimately, my journey with God is more important, and that journey includes things that bring me closer to him, like prayer, and spells, and crystals, and tarot. And I don’t see how according to Christians, something that brings me closer to God could possibly be wrong. Everybody’s journey is different, and whatever works for someone is what’s best for them. Spirituality isn’t a one size fits all. And this video helped so much! Especially with the part about how magick is the devils work, even though their actions we may consider it magick, but they don’t. That really spoke to me. Unfortunately, I don’t know where my ancestors from Europe came from, but I do know I have some Cherokee ancestors. I can remember prior to my Grandmother's death, her life long friend and preacher came in with holy oils, Psalms, prayers in tongue and "healing from her hands" to ease any suffering. My very Christian ancestors also believe in plant medicine, relationship with the earth (they were farmers and preachers) and many times, as a kid, I had tobacco placed on a bee sting to draw out poison. In my own practice, I have added in veneration of Jesus and work with him as one of my mentors and guides.

I’m so happy that you made this video. I was raised Catholic (I somehow managed to avoid religious trauma), but identify as agnostic now. However, I incorporate a lot of Catholicism into my practice, partially because it’s familiar & comforting to me, partially because of the aesthetics (yes I’m vain, lmao), and partially to feel connected to my ancestors (my mom’s side is Polish).

Lets be honest, there is nothing wrong with praying while doing spells. Setting intentions and prayer are two sides of the same coin. I mean when someones calls a circle are they not just reaching out to whatever energy they need to come..... thats not different than praying to a god when they need support.

Good video! I love how you talk about syncretization in folk Catholicism. It's a derived practice stemming from colonized countries or countries strongly influenced by Catholic ideals. The Philippines also has folk Catholic practices (Lihim na Karunungan, "Hidden Knowledge") and I agree that they call themselves more as "folk healers" than actually calling themselves mangkukulam ("witches"). Anywho, great job and I look forward to hearing more of your perspectives on this matter ♡

I can’t tell you how happy this made me!!!! I’m Christian and work with Archangel Michael, and I’m also a witch. I’m not Italian, but I’m hoping to research Irish folk magick and start to incorporate that into my practice. I don’t know a whole lot about my lineage, but I know I’m Irish because because when I showed interest in Irish dancing my grandmother told me that her grandmother (or great grandmother, I can’t remember which generation) came to the US from Ireland. This video makes me feel so seen, thank you!

I loved this video so much, so refreshing to have a conversation about Catholicism/Christianity being bound up in folk magic. I was brought up Catholic and still find a lot of comfort and power in the traditions; I denied it for a long time while I was exploring my pagan path but I could never bring myself to stop praying to St Anthony when I lost things and saying the rosary to honour Our Lady. I feel so much happier now I've made my peace with bringing together different parts of my practice. In England, where I'm from, there was a time when Catholicism was driven underground (during the Reformation) and my maternal ancestors (even recently e.g. great grandma and grandma) have a strong sense of keeping the traditions alive and there being something powerful in sustaining them despite the early Church of England's attempts to wipe them out. Also it's funny to me that at that time Catholicism was seen as pagan. It's all come full circle! Anyway that was a long way of saying thanks for making this :)

Unless you choosed another path, as I did, don't give up with baptism but try to evolute baptism! Is better create your version of baptism than give up... in Italy catholics aren't no more like in past, nowdays 30% of us do a lot of witchcraft and is accepted even if they don't know is witchcraft. In Rai 2, the statal tv, we got Paolo Fox with oroscope. Is normal and ok. So, really, DON'T GIVE UP!❤

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story! I think your family history is first off very cool (I grew up in a small town of mostly Italian folks in what has been historically considered the Little Italy of the area so I see exactly where you are coming from!) I myself am reconnecting with my heritage as a Black American of Mexican and Indigenous heritage. I’ve had to reconcile a lot with understanding my family history in full color but have recently found a big piece of the puzzle in that I’m northern Appalachian with ancestors from the southern portion of the Appalachian region, particularly TN and NC. I grew up seeing my mom and basically every other woman in my family practice Christianity very differently than others with an emphasis on spiritual warfare, deliverance, speaking in tongues, talking to/ seeing spirits, prophetic dreams, herbalism, blessing new homes to keep demons and entities out, breaking curses, and even astral projection that was described as “The lord took her body and spirit and she saw everything. Not long after that she died.” My mother incorporated the rosary, Anima Christi, and St. Michael when I was growing up and tbh I can identify with your practice in some ways. People who don’t get that are going to have to get real with how these experiences actually looked 😂. The most powerful witches in my family are staunch Christians 😂

Yes, yes, yes. I've been working with AFM for a few years, and recently discovered my family's more ancient, Scotts-Irish Catholicism based root. It just felt RIGHT, so I decided to lean in- like you said, if nothing else than to honor my ancestors. My first week learning about saint magic, including who I believe to be my patron saint, was nothing short of crazy magical. Like, instantly got a job with a $11k pay raise magic. Magic like being able to speak questions while standing in my kitchen and then simply *knowing* the answer- specifically for lost items. Magic like being able to ask my grandma for Christmas presents (usually the manifestation of lost heirlooms) and as long as I keep her rituals alive, she ALWAYS comes through. Magic so tangible I could no longer deny its flow in my life. When you know, you just do :) Also St.Anthony's tongue pod ftw, the Our Lady of Sorrows episode made me cry!

I've been so lost but this video has shown me not just that I can do both- but how I can do both!! It feels and looks so right and natural. Thank you! I'm going to start looking into Irish Catholicism, saints, and Irish folk magic. My maternal family all came from Ireland, except for my mothers father who was Native American. This will be a great way to explore my roots and get back to being wholly me :)

Exodus 22:18 is translated as "Thou shall not suffer a witch to live". But that phrase in Hebrew actually translates to "evil sorcerer" or "poisoner", not witch. It was translated as witch later on (around the inquisition, maybe sooner) in order to persecute the old religions and pagan practices. To scare people away from them and into the Church.

I am the first born in this country of parents from the Dominican Republic and Calabria, Italy. i come from a line of curanderas (healer women) and folk traditions. I have been surrounded from both sides by Saints, Jesus, herbs, nature and ancient ancestor worship. As a Christo Pagan I have never had a problem combining the two as it is just very second nature to my family. Jesus is my Deity and the Earth and its creations as well as some gods and universal creatures are my friends. I may be a little different, but as a person of the Caribbean we have a mish mosh of spiritual beliefs and i think it is beautiful in the way i have formed my own. As an ex Catholic, I always say that Catholicism prepared me for my current path as a witch. I was doing diety work a long time before I knew what that was. St. Anthony of Padua was so entirely powerful For me that literally anything I asked of him he gave me. So powerful one of my sons is named after him. And although I have left Catholicism this is quite the reminder for me that I can still call upon him. And perhaps it’s time to set up altar dedicated to him again (yes I had one beside my bed while Catholic) it is rather ironic to me as a pagan witch now to look back and see how much magick and diety work is threaded throughout Catholicism - and there is indeed power in their prayers and novenas - but I cannot bring myself to call upon their God nor immerse myself in their very damaging doctrine which kept me in an abusive marriage…. But you did describe how I look at the saints perfectly. Spirits, just like anything else. Thanks for the reminder and really perhaps this is a sign from the Universe to call upon the saints as I did before. Just with a little different understanding now.

I'm there with you. I grew up Catholic with Irish heritage in New Mexico (a very catholic place as well). The first magic workers I met were curanderos and practicioners of shamanism-both of which drew heavily on nature, but also incorporated catholic imagery. It made sense to me and only once I started delving deeper into Paganism did I wonder. One thing is clear, Christianity conquered Europe and the Americas, so any type of practice you find will have been influenced either (positively or negatively) by Christianity. Not to mention my ancestors said prayers with the Rosary and were Catholic, so it's an easy way to connect with them and 'speak their language'. I venerate the goddess(es), the wiches of old, my ancestors, the divine source(God), and the ones who were able to tap into the divine themselves like Jesus, Buddha and the saints. I see Jesus as an enlightened being akin to a Buddha. When it starts not making logical sense I admit that I don't know it all, the divine is much too large for us to completely comprehend and place into categories. That's all to say: Thanks for the video.

According to the Bible, Jesus was God in the flesh and there is no one else like him. He is the beginning and the ending eternal everlasting Holy one. He came to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Moses, the Israelites the prophets, the saints. He came to us and told us with HIS own mouth how to worship him and how to please him and be united with Him. HE told us. If you aren’t following Him, you follow a lie. Jesus wasn’t enlightened. He was the son of God. Second person of the Trinity. The Saints were those who put their trust in Jesus and repented of their sins and were gifted with the Holy Spirit who lived in them. Their powers were not their own, but God who is living in them. Their salvation was to God‘s grace alone through their faith. This is not something that can be achieved through witchcraft, which is a self worshiping, demon pleasing practice centered on pride and lust. It leads to death. It has nothing to do with Christianity. Considering the fact that all sorcerers were put to death in the Old Testament.

I am so glad you made this video because of my practice, I am still exploring, but after two years of research, this feels a closer direction than what i have been looking at. Edit: With having eastern european and celtic roots, than having ancestors that grew up around the germanic dutch in PA (aka Hex signs were the norm and integrated into our heritage) hearing folk magic and customs you discuss is comforting to me. Especially since I grew up Catholic and to call myself one feels wrong, but I still believe in saints, angels, God, and such. But I also feel wrong to worship and prostrate myself to another, but rather I see saints, angels, etc. as teachers to help myself grow spiritually. Mary is very important to me and always have been since I was a child ( i felt closer to her than Jesus) and Michael the archangel. So to hear this was really helpful. I may look into italian folk magic for while i don't have direct ancestry connection as far as i am aware ( I am still exploring my heritage beyond a certain point, I would like to learn what I can do and get ideas for I am still in the figuring out stage for while I keep reading, some things haven't felt right. This is the closest things have felt right so far and theosophy, but I am still figuring it out, but I am so glad for channels like yours.

As I grew up I kept asking the hard questions about the people running the religion, why we do things a certain way, who made the rules, and so on. This lead to some confrontation with higher ups and for me to not believe in the practices and people leading me and for me to start this journey. It has always felt kind of wrong for me to give up all of my Catholicism (also 9 years of catholic schooling that caused more trouble when you can put quite a priest but hey not my problem). Thank you for doing this video and showing this part of your practice. I love watching your videos and prospective and you should know how much good and just straight up awesomeness you give out to the world! Thank you again!

how do you always make a video about whatever topic i'm interested in at the moment! i'd love to see more videos about witchcraft and christianity if you'd like to make more, i find it incredibly interesting just how much the two are entwined with each other when people often assume they're polar opposites

I really enjoyed hearing the way you view the God in Christianity and Catholicism. While my view isn't exactly the same, knowing that I wasn't alone in seeing some things the way I do helped. I don't consider myself Christian, but I grew up very Christian, and as I started to adopt a more polytheistic view (I wouldn't currently consider myself a polytheist simply because I don't worship or engage with the gods) writing off this god as not real didn't sit right with me. The way I see it now, he's real and when I worshipped him and engaged with him I was given support and spiritual guidance and help through tough and troubled times, and that's valuable. That experience doesn't just go away. However, Christianity isn't the right practice for me, and I moved on. I'm still searching, but there are a few different things that I'm feeling called to so I'm currently doing some research as a way to get more familiar with the practice I'm considering.

Holy Cannoli! Where has my head been?! I can't believe I just came across this video! Anyway, I absolutely loved it, Frankie!! As a fellow folk practitioner I align with your way of melding together the components of catholicism and folk practices. I chuckled to myself when you commented that your Nonna would never have labeled her practice "witchcraft" because my Baba and Bacie felt the same way! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

I'm so glad you made this video. I identify as Christian. But there is a lot about it's organization as a religion that irks me. The Bible being taken entirely outside of it's relevant historical context is one, the cherry picking some commandments and ignoring others is another, just to name a few. Anyway! When I was young I was drawn to witchy things, this was long before youtube and credible online content, and everything you could find on witchcraft was overly simplified Wiccan fads. I flip flopped thinking I had to choose one path or another, not really feeling satisfied with either. Fast forward to my mid-thirties and I am finally rediscovering my passion for "witchy" things and realizing that there CAN be room for both. I'm deeply drawn to herbalism and the energies of nature and it no longer feels blasphemous to believe such things are available for me to explore thanks to a Divine Creator. It's a strange path, of not fully fitting in anywhere in particular, but it is feeling like home. ❤️

This is so interesting to me and also comforting. As someone who was always taught to stay away from magick and spellwork (growing up very Christian) it is refreshing to hear how both can work together side by side. I felt so lost as a beginner witch (and still do at times) because I don't have strong ties to my culture/feel removed from it (though I am trying to study the Norwegian side of my family) and my religious background. And so learning about folk Christianity as well as North American Folk Magick has become really important to me. Thank you for making this and I can't wait to see more on this topic if you ever feel like filming more!

I'm so happy for this video!! I stopped being Christian but I always had a special love for the saints I miss them a lot, but I thought I couldn't because I'm a witch and work with 2 greek goddesses (Nyx and Selene). And I remember about you, about the italian folk magic (my great ancle was italian from Campobasso) I decided to check out and I am SO happy for this. Thank you so much Frankie.❤

Very well said, I am of the Nordic and Celtic heritage but my most recent ancestors were Catholic and I have a lot of respect for the Catholic saints. the program that saved My life, and that I work with is heavily influenced by Christianity and it drove me absolutely crazy for a very long time. But I started to realize that for me it doesn't have to be a war... I could even see myself as incorporating in my own rituals, some of the Catholic influences of the mother, Mary or the saints. This is actually really broad in my horizon and I think you for sharing this.

These syncretisms have always been around. I find it sooo rich! I come from a catholic/spiritist family. But I have always been attracted by magic. The problem was that I kwew only the pagan wiccan-based traditions and never felt very confortable with them. In the web, it's the most abundant kind of practice. Your video is a wave of fresh air. Thank you!

I am not Italian but I find so many fascinating similarities with Filipino folk magic, which also syncretized heavily with Catholicism. I felt that when you said that modern practitioners are connecting more with roots and ancestors that have been lost over time. ❤

This is so refreshing 😌 same here, what many now call witchcraft, in my family, it was just called "what grandma taught me to do". Coming from a strong line of strong healing women which were Celtic, Jewish, Congolese...we'd grab our herbs, gas light, along with our Bible, take a nice shot of homemade brew (Appalachian here) and get to work so its interesting/refreshing to see more coming from this direction and hear others stories.
