In this video I talk about Gentoo Linux and what it really is. I've just started using Gentoo Linux and I have found it to be a really interesting linux distribution. The Installation Guide is what I'll be working on all this week and I will be updating the description and annotating the video for when the is released! I really hope you enjoy this video.

Gentoo is for Really Advanced Users who want to experiment with their computers and look for some challenge. Arch, is for those users who want to learn more of Linux, but have surpassed the first challenge, which is the conversion to Linux and the GUI installers... great work...!!!

If I'm not mistaken 64-bit is called AMD64 because the 64-bit "part" of the processors was developed by AMD and then licensed to Intel.
@randomaccessbrains
@randomaccessbrains 8 жыл бұрын
That is in fact correct! AMD first got x86 through licensing from Intel and Intel got licenses for the x86_64 architecture

AMD64 was thre first 64bit cpu and thats why i386 is the 32bit cpu stander becuase it was also first

@Bhaka tbh I have no idea what I was talking about nor do I remember this video, but micro code is necessary
@jimbow7787
@jimbow7787 5 жыл бұрын
@Bhaka I think you might be getting architecture and micro code messed up. Micro code is what manages the cpu architecture is the calls for x86 to do things. If you have a cpu in the last 8 years you're going to have a AMD64 even if it's Intel. All AMD64 is saying it's 64 bit or x86_64.

@Bhaka you wouldn't need to manually install microcode ever unless you know what you are doing or having an update

I can't believe that with that much passion that you have for Linux, you are still using it with dual boot with Windows?! I've used Microsoft Windows for almost 20 years, but after tasting the awesomeness of open source world I can't stand it anymore.
@AntounSawires

I totally agree and its great to hear that you were able to break away from Windows. The only reason I'm still using Windows is because of my love for gaming and the great tools for video editing. That being said I spend weeks at a time on Linux and only switching to Windows for either a game that isn't Linux compatible or if I need to use Photoshop or Premiere. The day tools comparable to those are on Linux and more than half of my steam library is on Linux I can justify uninstalling it. Thanks for the comment!

@tibfulv 6 жыл бұрын
Thought about Xen? No need to dual boot if you can keep Windows in a separate, reduced vm. Switching should be snappier, too. And games can only crash the vm. Arguably you need a separate video card for passthrough, but that should be the only added cost.

Nice Video, thanks for creating this. As a long time Gentoo user, I'll mention 2 points: 1) sudo is not really the preferred gentoo method to do admin work. Normally, convention is, to log in as root to do superuser work... easiest way to do this is to 'su -' ... the '-' gives a clean root env 2) emerge --sync: it doesn't download source code... it downloads/syncs a pile of text files that are the magic that Gentoo/portage is! It grabs ebuild/patch text files that contain all the information to properly build, from source code, all the programs.... where debian calls their codebase 'repos', Gentoo calls this the 'tree'. --sync also grabs user profiles which do neat things like set default useflags (useflags are on/off switches for options in the source code... if I want Audacity but never use mp3 format, I can build Audacity without the ability to import/export mp3.... by cutting out code I don't want, I reduce the size complexity of the app itself thereby speeding it up). Source code is grabbed when you emerge the program (emerge is the equivalent of 'apt install')

why would sudo not be preferred? it is a lot safer than logging into root

You do make interesting videos, however, I must confess that I feel you need a script for now. An example is that you hinted three times with the question "What is Gentoo Linux"... ...And, then you went on to promise that you would install it and create content. All the while, I'm asking myself: "why in the hell is this guy speaking in circles about other things, without responding to the question he raised?" :-) Food for thought... not trying to be a dick. I'm just an objective member of the audience who wishes you great success.

Gentoo is a developers distro, or it is a set of tools to create an operating system (Chome OS, for instance), or it is a way to build a server (but don't run it straight, bad idea for a webserver to have gcc...), or it is a starting point for creating an embedded system, or it is the easiest way to experiment with obscure system software (like glibc replacements: musl, uclibc), or you're hacking something like hdmi and need to patch files, epatch_user is much nicer than building the program yourself, and hunting down dependencies manually. or... or you could just use it as a desktop I guess ;) One thing you could also do with gentoo: install it in a chroot under another operating system. You could even do that with osX. Sometimes the reason for installing gentoo is just that it has software your chosen os doesn't (or you can build openssh with the hpn patches... unencrypted sftp!).

If you have some spare time, you can try Redcore Linux, Gentoo based, but for new user that want something else than win, you can change to gentoo with a simple command, and back to Redcore with another... I USE IT FROM THE FIRST RELEASE...

2:55 AMD64 refers to the AMD implementation of the x86-64 instruction set in their k8 chip which later became the standard. That's why it says AMD64. Intel ended up licensing x86-64 instruction set in the k8 from AMD.

It's interesting how differently Linux users think about computing. I don't see why anyone would use anything other than Arch(/Antergos/Manjaro) (unless you like tinkering like me and use Gentoo instead). Pacman is great, and I never had anything more than minor issues that were very easy and quick to fix. I tried installing and working with Ubuntu, Debian, Suse, Fedora, and a couple of others and they all seemed buggier and clunkier. Some of them I couldn't even get to install at all due to driver issues. But . . . that's the beauty of Linux. There's something for everyone (and if what you want doesn't exist, you can make it!).
@ClockworkRBLX
@ClockworkRBLX 6 жыл бұрын
"I don't see why anyone would use anything other than Arch" it's because arch is unstable and prone to breaking. also, the setup (while easy) is not graphical or user friendly in the same way that it is on debian, ubuntu, windows, etc

Most of the problems I've seen with Arch are the result of people trying too hard to be "responsible" and upgrading their system every single day which is just pointless. If you have your ports and the firewall on your router configured correctly, Linux as a desktop OS is already secure enough that the day-to-day updates have a higher chance of messing something up than whatever marginal security patches they provide. Updating your system once a week is more than sufficient for desktop use.

Totally agree. Arch is making best sense. Also it's definitely not hard or whatever most calling it. I'm using it for like 5 years and it's amazing. So now looking around Gentoo isn't that scary or hard, there are just a few differences in the installation process, which are fun anyway :D

Your compiler flags need some tuning... :) And a typical beginner mistake is to over do it with the USE flags in the make.conf - rather go for a per package USE flag in package.use

Hey Antoun, as a person who compiles kernels often. I think that debian/debian derivatives are the best when it comes to those things as they are easier and you can compile them into a .debfile Arch comes in second with mkinitcpio and gentoo comes in third in terms of time, usability and ease of use when it comes to kernel compiling...

So Gentoo is weird in that it doesn't even have to run on the Linux kernel. Gentoo BSD is totally a thing ;) In practice there's just less software for BSD and I suspect since it's less used you'll run into more compilation errors. But you should be able to get at least an XFCE desktop.
