As a german person who has lived in many different countries: I have to say that the german language is perfect for so called "anti-jokes". I think part of the reason the stereotype exists is that these jokes translate really badly into other languages.

Interesting... (I have been studying German for two months.) A joke in English that I like might be a good test of how well a non-native speaker understands English : "knock, knock" "who's there?" "to" "to who?" "actually, it's 'to WHOM'" As an English proofreader, I find this clever/cute. (I heard it from a 13-year old girl.) But I imagine it might not be funny to others.

Das ist wunderbar weil es eine schwere Sprache ist! Mir fiel es einfach Englisch zu lernen aber habe überhaupt keine Ahnung von Arabisch! Das du Deutsch lernst find ich toll weil ich zu doof bin Arabisch zu lernen, ich weiß gar nicht wo der Klang im Mund gemacht wird?

I do agree, most Germans or I should say in Germany (including multicultural people there), don't exactly find the need to laugh at things obviously made funny that also seems kind of tasteless and basal. There's an appreciation of simpler things, friendly gestures that's considered 'happy'.

I'm Jewish y live for humor. I ask God for this gift daily. I'm burned with 14 skin grafts. I'm not interested in sulking. So, I picked up German amongst other things. You need to laugh. Germans stuff things y look at their number one killer amongst their people. I think that a Jew is more likely to die from a heart attack for not turning a library book in on time.

In England they are often called "shaggy dog stories" part of the humour is the very fact that it takes so long to set up the scene and tell the back story. It's very hard to explain.

Yes we do, but this is called political Cabaret! Not everyone is a fan but it's a very important part of German Humor! There is a saying here "humor is if you laugh despite!" That's in England called GALLOWS HUMOUR!

Jedem, der sagt, dass die Deutschen kein Humor haben, würde ich empfehlen, sich eine Folge von Loriot anzusehen. Loriot ist eine Fernsehserie von 1970er Jahren, die sehr populär war und hat sogar Kultstatus erlangt. Der Humor ist sehr intelligent und verfeinert ; ) Alle Folgen sind heute auf KZbin. Das ist eigentlich das beste Argument zur Verteidigung des deutschen Humors. ( und zugleich ein starker Beweis für die Tatsache, dass er überhaupt existiert :)
