Like many, I felt awkward during that finance segment. It's my field, and hearing you waffle with 0 idea or research, for half an hour is just not what we come here for. I genuinely like listening to you give your opinion and talk about cars even when you got no clue, it's entertainment. However, economic/political views based on guesses and 0 research are pointless.

Tony really is that bloke down the pub who absolutely has to have a confident opinion on anything that comes up sometimes. I beg you, if you're gonna keep talking financial markets next year, get a guest on who can chat about it meaningfully so it's not just prattling on. Love the insights from his world and both of your opinions on cars, but the whole sequence around "Oh yeah of course the Chinese will buy Infiniti it's a Chinese brand" (it's Japanese) was just a really tough listen.

Yes, if you can’t be a major manufacturer in China then you have a real problem. Even USA would need to grow around 80% to catch up in volume. UK or Germany would need to triple. Chinese buyers are buying Chinese built cars including Tesla because they are better. Audi agree because they are stopping building their own and will sell SAIC EV’s with a revised Audi badge because even the brand has lost its shine. Tesla won’t hit a wall for a long time because they will dominate self-driving with the Cybercab. VW is in massive trouble with $190B in debt, plummeting profits and no way to grow in China and probably not significantly in the USA. I’m not sure if the German government can afford to bail them out. Porsche was spun off as it’s probably the only brand value in the company. My prediction is at least 3 and maybe 4 or 5 major manufacturers are bankrupt before 2028 and some may just vanish into the history books.

Because he sells a few cars he acts like he knows the entire industry inside and out and his ego can’t admit he’s wrong so he spouts bullshit on most topics. He also offers absolutely no insight to cars over 4/5 years old. Everything older than that is absolutely terrible according to him. Also the ego he has thinking he’s a great driver when he drives a GT3 with every modern assist known to man on it. He’d probably struggle in your 360! It’s really tiring hearing the same lines from him every episode like “458 is shit, 488 is a million times better, everyone knows that” - when generally people regard the 458 far better because of the NA V8. Also him crying about manuals constantly is REALLY getting old. We need someone new

The reason why Jaguar are doing this is inline with what Tony said, they have tired to compete with the German/Italian sports car brands. So they are now going in a direction of JLR… they can use the Land Rover EV power train and chassis’s to create a fancy LR that’s squished onto a Spector competitor. I think the jaguar new direction is the ‘Posh’ side of JLR, I wouldn’t be surprised if they released a RR black badge rival with the SV variant as EV is now on the back foot

China really did become a key market for alot of upmarket marques. Audi have a "L" version of the A6 n BMW have a similar long wheelbase option of the 3 n 5 Series if i remember correctly. The faster a brand reacts to interest, the better off they can do until things stagnate. Lamborghini did that here in India n it was a fantastic choice by Winkelmann. They even went on to drop somethin called the _India Serie Speciale_ which were limited to 6 cars; 2 each in Arancio Borealis (Pearl Orange), Bianco Monocerus (White) and Verde Ithaca (Pearl Green) to form the Inidan tricolor flag 🇮🇳 The interiors were available only in black with orange stitching on the driver's side, white stitching for the dash n green for the passenger side. The central spike was also with the same tricolor theme. The cars were basically LP550-2s as well n offered with a manual n automatic. I believe only 2 were specced with the manual however. These basically translated to a Valentino Balboni Edition in a different livery but were offered at the standard Gallardo pricing. Its very little effort but one that cemented their footing into the market. They now dominate sales over their counterparts. They did the same with China too by giving them a China Speciale Murci SV. Again, minimal effort/expense for the manufacturer but the buyer market feels honored/appreciated. Winkelmann really was a genius when it cames to this both at Lamborghini n Bugatti with all the special editions that were rolled out under him. On the Jaguar incident, damn I think they pulled a straight bud light with that ad campaign! Lets face it, only the Jaaag enthusiasts were buying their flagship XJL n the likes. So choosing to completely ignore their loyal customers in order to appeal to an entirely new bunch that wouldn't really even bother buying their cars was a huuuge mistake!

@cliftonjackson441 A trade gimmick at the very least. Brands from throughout teh spectrum do these things. Even Pagani did it with the Dragon Edition with the Huayra when every Pagani is technically a one off. This one came with the Tempesta package n a dragon insignia on the side. But they get to make the buyers from that market feel more special n hence open up their wallets.

I also heard the same before your podcast last week about potential ICE/Hybrid engines in Taycan and Macan models. I guess Porsche don't want to say too much now because it could have a negative impact on their sales in the present time for the Taycan and Macan, which are already in a bad state. So those potentially considering an EV could hold back and wait for an ICE/Hybrid Taycan or Macan alternative. I'd certainly consider an ICE or Hybrid Taycan or Macan as a family car.

In my humble opinion, u r wrong. The Chinese vehicles are very well built, well equipped and cheap. They are as reliable if not more reliable than most European brands. They made all European EVs look and feel obsolete. I often travel to China and I was stunned by how much they could catch up, or surpassed the European car's industry in just 5 years. I used to be extremely biased against Chinese cars, just like most of us, but I ran out of excuses now... I'm talking about only EVs of course.
@AspireTurboАй бұрын
Chinese car makers are being subsidized by the Chinese government and "stole" quite a lot of knowledge from the European car makers... or they rather sold their knowledge to China, same outcome. That and the fact that their labor costs and material costs for batteries are lower compared to EU car makers helps them to achieve lower car prices. The US and EU imposed tariffs to protect local car makers, that won't save them forever though. In terms of technology the Chinese really caught up quickly and will probably surpass EU and US car makers if they don't correct their courses soon.

Quick one regarding Chinese EVs. The quality of Nio, Zeekr and maybe LiAuto is easily equivalent to anything electric the Germans are offering, at lower prices too. Brand like Nio are also starting to have a similar sort of status when compared to the Germans too. In Shanghai Nio is the brand of educated, wealthy soccer moms. Most common car outside most high fee private schools @ pick up time.

I am not a China expert, I keep up to date with the 'china update', but you are right the car industry globally is about to undergo a MASSIVE adjustment, as are most other sectors. We are already over the precipice and rolling down the other side of a global trade war. China's economy is set to slow very quickly, their population is already in extreme decline, estimated to be 130m less than advertised. Not only that but their elderly population has overtaken the west as a percentage of total population. Economies around the world are also throwing tariffs on China and these are not just western economies.

Much too long chaps, again. The interesting points are swamped by the verbiage.

I like their rebrand all the car journos and youtubers will praise cars for "car people" and then not put their money where their mouth is an actually buy it. Meanwhile you will have something gaudy like the Urus or the Tesla truck which will sell. Jaguar are just going where the money is they will make some sort of saloon cyber truck type thing and I don't blame them for it

I'm so curious how good a Cayman can be with a smaller battery, say 2/3 or less of Taycan Performance battery. Rear motor, something really light like the Lucid Air's motor, or a couple smaller ones tuned for wheel rpm. So, around 3500 rpm is enough for a Cayman. No gear reduction, no diff, no 2-gear-box. Just two motors and half axles. Now what can Porsche do to make their chassis lighter (and more profitable)? A Tesla style chassis of very few components, more large pressed parts? Hemp body panels? Manual windows, no aircon, manual seats, etc, etc? I think if someone wanted, the electric version would be the same weight or even less. With smart tyre choice and body kit (aero that hides well), range should be just fine.
