What is going on in North Korea? Do recent events signal an opening in the system or a spiraling down of the system? What challenges do the United States and its allies face?
Professor Victor D. Cha (Ph.D. Columbia, MA Oxford, BA Columbia) is director of Asian Studies and holds the D.S. Song Chair in the Department of Government and School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. In 2009, he was named as Senior Adviser and the inaugural holder of the new Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. He left the White House in May 2007 after serving since 2004 as Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council. At the White House, he was responsible primarily for Japan, the Korean peninsula, Australia/New Zealand and Pacific Island nation affairs. Dr. Cha was also the Deputy Head of Delegation for the United States at the Six Party Talks in Beijing, and received two Outstanding Service commendations during his tenure at the NSC.

What’s with the way the first guys pronunciation of o’s and u’s? Sounds like he’s turning into an upper class American which doesn’t sound right at all.

There are 3 american accents that are non-rhotic; the Boston/New England accent, the old timey trans-Atlantic upper class accent and an old timey southern accent.

I love the term "selectorate." We have the same thing here but there are two of them. I give thanks that there are no more Kennedys left and the Bushes are history but unfortunately the Clinton's are still with us.

Fred Warmbier said he and his wife, Cindy Warmbier, worked tirelessly for the release of their son, who he said was detained at an airport in Pyongyang in January 2016. Otto Warmbier visited North Korea as part of a tour organized by a Chinese-based company. After a one-hour trial in March 2016, Otto Warmbier was convicted of attempting to steal a propaganda poster and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. The North Korean regime deemed him a "war criminal" and "brutalized and terrorized" him during his detainment, his father said.Fred Warmbier said his family doesn't believe North Korea's story.

Or he’s originally a man with a traditional southern accent, or one of the others, and has worked mostly successfully to incorporate a standard accent for his lectures. I find non-rhotic accents charming, but I’m from the south.

@11:50 The lack of "economic reform" in N.Korea disappoints Dr. Cha?...Should they adopt the Keynesian system and have some market crashes? Maybe if N.Korea could mount some effective change in their economy, if they were not alienated by the trade monopoly facilitated by the proliferation of the U.S. dollar as reserve currency, and 600+ U.S. foreign military bases. Dr. Cha should be disappointed in his own country's lack of economic reform, and stop watching so much sports.

North Korea rather spend money on more weapons than opening up jobs and Feed their people they'd rather other nations feed their people so they can continually to fatten themselves up. Someone needs to drop a nuke on wherever Kim is at to just end this mess.
