I went down a rabbit hole to decode the EGO mower model numbering system. LM, of course, stands for Lawn Mower. Here is the additional info. I have the barebones LM2101 (non-propelled, 5Ah,). It does a fine job on my 3000sf+ lawn (0.2 acre). I have several other Ego tools, so I have 2 more 2Ah batteries. I never have to worry about running completely out of juice. My only complaint is that it only goes down to 1.5". Plastic vs Steel Deck: For the vast majority of people, the plastic deck will be perfectly fine. Unless you're constantly running over rocks and sticks, the plastic deck will be substantially lighter and easier to maneuver. There is almost no vibration with an electric motor vs a gas motor, so there's very little risk of the deck cracking. Having an electric mower with a metal deck adds unnecessary weight for most situations. Push vs Self-Propelled: Pushing a gas mower is far more work than pushing an electric mower. With an electric mower, you don't need the heavier metal deck and gas motor and you don't have the constant vibration. I had both an Ego push mower and an older Honda self-propelled mower. It is easier to push the Ego than to let the Honda propel itself. Most people would be really surprised at how easy it can be to push one of these. Runtime: The best situation is to have all of your OPE on the same battery platform and have multiple batteries. It's so much easier to "restart" an electric mower once it's run out of power than to "restart" a gas engine after it's run dry. My old Honda (15+ years old) was a PITA to get started after it ran dry. 13 Different Models: Absolutely ridiculous. They don't even need half that many. They're just cannibalizing their own market. They only need 1 non-propelled, 1 high-end self-propelled with all of the features, and 1-2 lower spec self-propelled models. They keep coming out with more and more models that have very little differentiation from the existing models. They have done the same thing to their blowers, string trimmers, snow blowers and Zero Turns. Way too many models of the same basic piece of equipment. Prices: The prices for their lower spec stuff are fine. The prices for the top spec stuff are pretty ridiculous. The added performance and features are nice (I would guess), but you pay dearly for the privilege. Overall OPE lineup: What they have is great (I have 5 pieces of equipment). But, they're missing several key categories. Where are a backpack sprayer, tiller, dethatcher, and REEL MOWER??? I'm sure that they would build great choices in those categories IF they ever bothered to try. But they keep churning out new models in their existing categories.

Thank you. A couple questions. Do all the mower batteries from EGO work on all the EGO mower models? If I buy the 56v 7Ah 21” mower , can I use the 6Ah with the mower? I guess it’s a matter of form factor right? If the battery fits in the mower, then it will work? The other question is a self propelled one worth $100 more than a push one? If something goes wrong with the sp feature, I can still just push it like a push one right? Or will it disable the entire mower? You mentioned that push mowers on battery mowers are really light assuming it’s a plastic deck which is why I’m considering push instead of self propelled. I just know my non self propelled gas mower was a pain in the butt over the years. Thx.

Same here, have a rear wheel drive 21" Honda mower for a decade and still looks brand new. I rinse it off after every use, sharpen the blade every 15 cuts and only use non ethanol gasoline. Starts every time on the 1st pull. I dont see the need to spend $700 for a plastic mower that can barely mow 1/4 an acre

​@snotbubbles3276 I've had the base Ego lawnmower with 5ah battery and rapid charger for 7 years. The battery started waning a little 3 years ago. I bought a 16" chain saw with 5ah battery 2 years ago and use it for the mower. That mower never needed any service other than cleaning the base above the blade after cutting very wet grass a couple of times. I never have to change the oil. I never have to drive to get gas. I plan on getting a new blade this year but my original blade has never been sharpened or replaced yet. When I do replace it, I can put the mower on it's side and never worry about spilling gas or oil, either.

I purchased my EGO LM2100SP back in the Spring of 2017, Its still going strong. It came with the 7.5 Ah battery which is still working well. The only problem( recent within the last 2 yrs) is that one of the speed control wires has an intermittent such that with the handle extended to operating length has full speed only. Not a problem for me since I never use the SP in my yard with St. Augustine grass( I count it as a workout instead of going to the gym that day) Great Channel BTW.

I have an EGO push and an EGO SP. They work fine, especially for houses I'm fixing that I need a portable mower to tote to every 2 weeks. Can't understand why they'd put a steel deck on one, the plastic decks seem fine, light and won't rust.

I agree with your findings. I have their line trimmer and leaf blower and have been really impressed with the battery technology. By the way, that $1000 mower is that price because it comes with a 12ah battery. If you were to buy the 12ah battery by itself...it's $600! I'm an EV guy, so I like to compare some of this stuff to EVs. You'll see some of the Hyundai and Kia EV cars that cost over $50k, but you sit in them and the materials used feel more like a $25-30k vehicle. The high price is because of the batteries. You'll see a lot of hate online for EVs and battery powered equipment because of this, but we're at the dawn of this technology. I predict in the near future, the prices will drop with better battery technology that becomes lighter in weight, and cheaper to source.

Battery prices will never drop, lithium batteries are a perfect cash cow... The biggest 18650 is still around 3.5ah, the tech hasn't gone anywhere fast in the last 10 years. Now companies are switching to cheaper lfp batteries which Ford says cost as little as $80/kwh but the cost of their battery pack is like $36k, that's a massive profit margin, same as ego, here in Canada its basically over $1000/kwh for their batteries and that's a total rip off, that's basically 90% of their business...

My concern, and I don't know enough to be sure, is that each of these electric manufacturers are making mowers with no standardization between them, and so every part will be proprietary and must be purchased from factory. Everything breaks eventually, and when these break the parts will be too expensive to repair and these will end up on the curb. I hope I'm wrong.

I bought a Hart 40 volt 21” with self propelled drive two years ago. Paid $175 at Walmart and it came with battery and a charger. It was on sale in October. Works great, no issues, and it mulches. Not as powerful as my older gas push mower. I was looking at the prices on several brands of electric, and the prices are insane. Glad I got that deal on the Hart!

I’ve been using an Ego mower for 5 years now on good old South Florida St Augustine grass and it’s been the best mower I’ve ever owned…and I loved my classic asymmetric Lawn Boy. The only thing I had to do is clean the batter terminals and replace the mower blade.

Bought the LM2156SP on sale $749.00 at Lowes, your friend is the most AH’s you can get. It came with a 10 & 5 AH batteries & Rapid charger .It really cuts well it is a dual blade system and can only function with 2 blades also came with a high lift blade and extended run time blade. It came with the upper blade & mulching blade installed. As the deck is a polymer I believe I coated the underside with turtle wax & Balistol for ease of cleaning and grass not sticking easier to clean (spray on cloth or paper towel then apply). My Troybilt with Honda engine died out at 6 years. I couldn’t find a gas mower with the engine I trusted for a good price.

I also have a Husqvarna gas mower that now has a Briggs engine on it, but I got my LM2100SP about 5 years ago half price (about $245 then), open box at Home Depot--somebody returned it for some reason. Has worked great, it's a great stand-in when the gas mower won't start for whatever reason, and I still use it for the lion's share of our almost 1/2 acre yard. I can almost mow the entire yard using self-propel with a 10 A-H battery. I will put a new blade on it for the first time very soon when I powerwash and do the winter layup maintenance on both mowers. I also have an Ego 18" chainsaw and a pole saw, and four batteries of different A-H capacity.

Australian Ego user here. Bought a 52cm Ego push mower last year. The fast charger was faulty out of the box and only charged the battery to half charge, then shut down. Ego Australia typically provides smaller batteries and charge a lot more than US counterparts. The Z6, for example, is almost $10k here (US$6,600!) and is only supplied with 4x 10ah batteries 😡 The push mowers are usually only supplied with 5ah batteries.. I do like the push mower, now that I have a replacement charger, but I'm pissed that we have to pay so much here for downgraded products..

I purchases (and returned) a Greenworks 40V mower with a steel deck. But didn't seem powerful enough for my hills. It was on sale. During the second mowing, the batteries died. Their models are confusing too. I expect the 80V pro model is great. But I probably buy the Ego next spring.

Thanks for doing this!!! I’m sure some people with their cathode ray tube TVs and landline phones will complain about electric. That said these make sense for a lot of people. A lot of people never change the oil or filter in there mower (apparently some mowers try to claim lifetime oil - what???) Like me, I have a small suburban yard (1/6 acre). When ever I’m sick of dealing with my 11 year old sears craftsman with the older flat head engine, I’ll get one of these. It’s still kicking but that said, it makes a lot of sense for people like me who have small yards in a high cost of living area like Seattle. I’m not paying 80 bucks every time to have someone come to mow my yard. Having no basement puts garage space at a premium, so being able to fold the mower up and hang it would be a game changer. My neighbor has an electric that he hangs on the wall of his garage. That alone might be worth the 100-200 bucks extra for electric. The other thing I noticed when I bought my old gas mower (229 dollars at the time), I couldn’t find a decent mower on Craigslist for anywhere close to under 100-150 bucks. I was broke at the time and just got one of the cheapest ones at Sears. Now, used gas mowers here are much cheaper used than they ever were. I see working ones go for Free on Facebook at times. Clearly the market is changing, especially in the urban or dense suburban communities.

I will stick with my gas mower for as long as possible. If there's a natural disaster or a terrorist attack that takes out the power grid, I'll still be able to mow my lawn. You won't (after you drain whatever is left in the battery).

@@duckpwnd Haha you’ll have the nicest yard in the apocalypse. If that happens, keeping my lawn nice probably won’t be my biggest priority nor would I waste my propane on charging a mower or waste my gasoline if I have a gas mower. If the grid goes down, how would you get gas? Pumps aren’t gonna work. People are going to panic and scramble and all the stations that might have gas would be out of it anyways. You can’t keep big stocks of gasoline unless you turn it over, with an extra thanks to ethanol. It probably would be easier to rely on solar and back up batteries for bare essentials for a long term crises than gas unless you keep a very healthy reserve of propane. Something to consider if you are preparing for the worst. One of my next projects is to get a generator and interlock, and set it up so it can run off of gas, natural gas, or propane in case the big cascadia subduction zone earthquake comes along. I’ll probably get a larger propane tank too so I can run the generator. Outside of the apocalypse, I just want garage space and minimize the maintenance. With my mowing taking about 20 minutes, gas doesn’t really make sense anymore.

I would not recommend the folding up the mower after every use. It will weaken the wire at the folds and lead to mower needing repairs.

I have the lm 2102sp and have had it for my 3rd summer and been pretty happy so far. The battery has been solid. Have most of the ego tools and the batteries are interchangeable so I use the 7.5 ah in my snowblower as well. My yard is around 7k square feet and uses around 3/4 of the 7.5 battery. The 2156 was last years top model and the 2167 is this years top model. I have every charger other than the turbo one. I basically only use the rapid charger and the 2 port that came with my snowblower.

You can get the dual charger in the snowblower kit…but it’s not fast. I ended up buying a second fast charger instead of using the dual that came with it. The 2 5Ah batteries can be charged before the 2 5Ah batteries in use run out as long as you use the fast charging.

Yeah, if it would take you 2 hours to cut your grass with a push mower; of course you don't want a mower that runs about 45 minutes. I have the 2135sp with the same 615 blower and power load weed eater and I have to swap batteries so I have no idea how you're getting half an acre done on half a 7.5ah battery, all of my tools were bought in the last 3 months because i was sick of gas and wanted to go electric so maybe I got a dud or my grass is thicker than yours

I have the first Ego lawnmower i think its the LM2101, push mower came with the rapid charger and 5AH battery. I got it in clearance at the Home Depot back in 2019 or 2018 cant remember but i paid only $199 plus i had a $20 off coupon that basically paid for the sales tax so i got a deal. Im in South Florida so i mow year round and had no issues with this mower. I did upgrade (sort of) to the Ryobi 40v self propelled since i moved out of a condo with a small 1100 sq ft yard to a house with a much bigger yard. Havent used the Ryobi yet because the Ego just keeps going man. I have their 650 CFM blower, string trimmer, and multi-head that i use with the edger. All great tools. None are the newer tools because i think Ego just keeps making the same tools with fancy “upgrades” that are really more of a luxury than necessity for really high prices. Just get the basic model of whatever Ego equipment and it will do the job for most people many years to come. I havent had to use their warranty because i have not had any issues with any of their equipment. I love Ego and would recommend their OPE line to anyone, pro or DIY.

I've had a similar experience except I think I bought my mower in 2016 new for $400 or $450. The only thing I bought "fancy" was my string trimmer. It has the carbide shaft with auto string loader. I also have an edger, hedge trimmer and pole saw, bought without batteries. I bought a 16" Ego chainsaw 2 years ago with the 5ah battery included so I could use it in my mower. All my tools have never broken down. My first string trimmer came with a defective battery from day one. The brand new replacement has worked flawlessly for about 4 years.

I bought a 21" sp ego that adjusts the speed to your walk speed,Problem is the wheels don't disengage when you come to the end of the run. Other then that I love it. So I went out and bought a used 21" sp ego with three speed control knob. It's way better then the speed iq. As soon as you release the speed lever the wheels disengage like they should.

I bought the one with the 7.5ah battery. Good mower, good battery, the self propel is unrefined. It works for me, I have to charge the battery about twice per mow. Thinking I'll buy the leaf blower and utilize that battery.

That will work well. I bought an Ego chainsaw with 5ah battery to use with my mower and it works great. I have one of the original push mowers and that battery got weaker after 4-5 years but still works. The newer battery is 2 years old and I haven't noticed any degradation yet. Now I can always have one charging or charged while using the other one. I basically only use the newer one 80% of the time because it's better. With you not having yours as long, the spare will be interchangeable.

I bought a EGO LM2142SP dual battery self propelled mower last July for $729, it is now $699. It is a great mower for cutting grass. But I'm finding it lacking in the fall when I mow over the fallen leaves and mulch them up. My old mower, an old Honda had a mulching blade with two levels of cut. I'm wondering if I could get a similar blade for the EGO and get similar results. I'm not sure which blades would fit the EGO.

They sell a mulching blade set for their SelectCut mowers (the ones with two blades). They’re about $40 for the pair. There’s another set designed for more suction if you’re bagging them.

I want a 22 inch mulcher. It actually seems way bigger than even a 21 inch that it replaced. 20" are toys. What does a battery cost? When my newish Toro needs replacing perhaps electrics will be where they need to be.

Buying the self propelled Ego was a mistake for me. The battery dies really fast, even when pushing manually. Now I have the drag of the drive gear working against me while pushing. If you buy the optional 10 AH batter, the drive system might be OK. I bought a small gas powered lawn tractor instead. The Ego is my touch up unit for tight spaces only.

I went to Lowe’s to check out 56v 7.5 Ah one the other day and it has plastic wheels. My gas one is rubber. Is that going to be an issue down the road? Also I thought mulchers and side dispensers were included? I didn’t see either.

With Ego's higher-end/more expensive mowers, the mulching blade and mulching plug are in the box, as is the side dispensing chute. But maybe these aren't included with the lower-end models.

I’m actually taking my Ryobi Select Cut back this morning and buying the LM2156 XP that’s on sale right now. I enjoy the spreadsheet. The Ryobi feels cheap and has a weird pause while mowing that causes me to break stride. I just don’t like it.

I sold my self propelled, after using it for a yea,r for $500 and bought a Simplicity riding lawnmower. I still have the weed eater, chainsaw, hedge trimmer and blower. These are all older models but work great. I only had two 2.5 ah batteries and the fast charger. A friend of mine has a big lot and the grass is at least 2' high. I started with the weedeater but the batteries would not last as long as I would like. They do charge fast but I wanted a bigger battery. At Lowe's the 6 ah battery was $350. A bit much so, I bought the 2114 basic model for $400 and got the 6 ah battery and charger. That mower has a high lift blade and no side chute, just a plug. It is not self propelled and just mulches. Believe it or not, I was able to mow the grass setting it on high and making 2 passes. I think it lasted somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour. Still a struggle because it is a big lot. I'm getting ready to go over there and use a grass whip and see how that goes. Lol.

I really want to buy a EGO mower to replace my gas model, but I'm very worried about losing function. My lot has approximately 10,000 square feet and I use my mower heavily in the fall to help vacuum and mulch leaf debris. My lot is flat and I can push. I don't need self propelled. Any feedback on models with 7.5 or 10 ah batteries would be appreciated.

get a honda hrx while u can, change the oil every few mows at first and it will out live you. thats a large lawn, the hydrostatic model, no belts, even with thicccccccccc af Bermuda I have to run after it, even if the grass is wet. If you have a thin weak lawn, electric would be fine though

The LM2021 is actually a great price! It includes the charger and battery. The charger costs $120. The 5Ah battery costs $160. So this means the lawn mower by itself is truly only $220. It's not the lawn mower that's expensive. It's the battery and charger that are!

You may want to look at the actual and recommended charging options for LI batteries. Battery University is a good source. If you want your overpriced battery to last as long as possible, you don’t let it run to zero and you don't charge to 100 %. So your runtime is drastically reduced along with a number of other considerations that one needs to consider (fast vs. Slow charge...)

EGO batteries can’t run to zero. They are protected with a voltage cut. So over-discharging isn’t at all a threat. They are balanced charged, I wouldn’t hesitate to charge the, to full provided I’m not leaving the, sitting around after the charge. Storage should always be at 50% or thereabouts, that’s usually a LiPo thing, but honestly it’s a good practice. I agree with what you hinted at. The rate of charge has probably a greater impact than anything on cell longevity (assuming a protection scheme is in place for the cells). The slow chargers are absolutely the way to go. Preventing heat build up in a cell is critical to longevity and higher charge rates do impact battery temps. But not charging to full is an arbitrary and wasteful endeavour IMHO. It’s not possible to do that with precision with these chargers and I do not see the value in partial charges based on their use case which is to perform. All batteries slowly die. Willingly taking a hit on performance or capacity to protect the cell is putting the battery before the equipment. Job/equipment first. The battery cannot be the primary consideration when measuring against use and performance IMHO.

I think the consumers are BETA testing these battery powered mowers for the manufactures when they buy one. It would be nice to know what year each model that you showed was introduced. I am sure some shown were leftover models. Maybe some of those models were made for a specific retailer. One thing for sure if there is not a warranty service center near you, it is going to be expensive to ship back for repair. I have repaired the sensor and interlock switches that prevent the motor from starting when the foldable handle is not correct position. Those sensor wires are very small and usually break right where the handle pivots at the deck. I would like to see Honda come out with a battery powered mower, after all this fall they quit making gas powered lawnmowers. I see a lot people cut their losses and just send these mowers to the landfill. Thanks for posting the comparisons.

I bought my ego 20” about 9 years ago. Evidently you just became aware of these, hence the ridiculous “beta tester” comment. Mine is still going strong, original blade & incredibly, the original 5.0 battery. Another thing that I find interesting is that you knock a product with years of experience & good customer reviews but seem more interested in a gas mower company (Honda) coming out with their first electric Sounds like you want to be a “beta tester.”

@@aquaticaaficionado2004 I moved to my current home in 2013-14? & had to buy a mower that summer. The ego mower came with a 5.0 battery. The other two 5MaH batteries say “ARC” in addition to the power rating, so no confusing the two purchases. The newer pair of 5 batteries came with the snowblower. This is years newer & they are labeled “arc.” I suppose it may only be 8yrs depending on what month of that 1st year but who cares? Almost a decade before conking out is the point. I have the chainsaw, the mower, leaf blower, hedge trimmer & the trimmer. Most of those were “bare tool” so the batteries that I do have get a lot of use across all those tools. Perhaps I should add you to that list of tools?

FWIW, I have the dual charger (it came with my snow blower). It charges 2 X 7.5Ah batteries in about 90 minutes from one bar to full. My 10Ah batteries take longer, but I haven't timed those yet. (Check back with me in December and I'll let you know)

I believe the touch drive is just a fancy way of saying it has a button. It doesn't control speed or acceleration beyond on and off.

I have this 21 inch model, and I can tell you that the touch drive is not just an on-and-off button, it does vary speed depending on how far you rotate the switch. It's not just an on-off button

The 21 inch figure refers to the deck diameter, for which the blade length is 20.5 inches, at least according to Ego's listed specs.

Hi Jeff ! Just wanted to say that I watched your entire video and enjoyed all of it . I live not far from where you live in the winter months, Henderson Nevada. The reason I kept watching you was because you reminded me of my father who did his due diligence back in the early 80’s with Honda mowers. I actually ended up buying a Honda mower myself and it performed flawlessly for many years . This was when I lived back in western New York. Now that I live in Henderson, there isn’t a speck of grass in my yard. Some times I miss mowing the lawn , but that came with shoveling snow, which I don’t miss at all . Ryobi and Greenworks both have 30in models. Greenworks used to have a 25in but they may have discontinued it when they introduced the 30in. Greenworks is targetting professionals so while the price looks the same, the Ryobi is a complete package (includes batteries, etc) and a day or two ago Home Depot was offering a free blower and trimmer with purchase.

They have a zero turn that they claim can do 2 acres. It has 4 batteries and claim the charger can do all 4 at once in 2 hours. It has capacity for 6 batteries to go up to 3 acres. It’s pricey, but it depends on what your time is worth to you. If you factor in having to get gas, change spark plugs and filter, oil change, etc. you spend a lot of time on the mower without mowing. With electric you just charge the battery and move on. I think in a couple years the market is going to eliminate a lot of gas mowers and yard tools once economies of scale and production prices drop.

You have touch drive and speed IQ mixed up, Speed IQ is the one that senses your stride and from all the reviews I’ve seen it’s not a great feature. Touch drive is where it’s at for the SP models, set the speed toggle and press the button.
