I think the key to understanding the preloved market at the moment is that a lot of people entered the luxury game when you could basically get your money back on many items, sometimes a little more and that became their safety net - now it’s back to normal where a second hand piece should be a better deal and people haven’t adjusted their expectations.

My observation is that those people who would have purchased pre-loved has declined due to the cost of living and inflation. They have less disposable income. Buy a bag because you LOVE it, not to resell it.

Even if I did have a lot of money, I couldn't justify spending it on handbags, and this is coming from a girl who loves bags. I think the resellers are taking advantage of people, both ways, the ones that sell the bags to them (they pay pennies for the bags) and the ones that buy the bags (they overprice the bags) it’s crazy!!!

To be honest. If you produce at cost and remove the logo, the luxury market really isn't that expensive. The mark is about 80% of the actual price. But the fact that you are *preluxz* buying an image and showing off your taste to make them think you are richer than you are is a very good thing to do。

Ive been buying preloved bags for about a decade. Before covid it was great. Things were at a great price and you had time to have a think before buying. There was much less fomo. Lots of people thought preloved was icky back then. I hardly ever brought new. You had to be carful of fakes. Having a good handbag knowledge was vital. During covid buying preloved was often more expensive than buying new. People were buying up everything to resell and make a profit. It feels like its starting to go back to how it used to be and Im here for it!!

I am only a purchaser (in order to curb my own overconsumption I don’t sell anymore). But as a buyer I am more likely to buy preloved than ever before. But my “rules” for buying resale would infuriate a seller. For example I would never buy a second hand bag (even in perfect condition) for more than 50% of the original (not the current) retail price. And lucky for me more deals like that are available now! Also authentication services are better and more available than even just 5 years ago. And finally overconsumption in general and the internet means just about anything anyone would want is available at any given time so I have more leverage as a buyer to negotiate prices down further.

I see the problem as people who purchased the bags at a lower price are now flooding the market to make a profit. That’s why when you look there is so much inventory. It applies to Chanel mostly. Flap Bags from 2008 sold for $2500 pre-pandemic and now are listed for $8000. And the Hermes Birkin and Kelly people realize are impractical and too large for everyday. You only learn this after you own them, so buyer’s remorse and they are listed for sale. And finally the “super fakes” which makes you fear buying preloved.

I bought a Louis Vuitton Eva on eBay; it was from a Japanese seller. When I received the duty bill it was double of what it should have been. DHL said that the bag was shipped from India. The Japanese seller continues to lie about the shipping location. eBay is absolutely no help: an A.I. bot told me that it didn’t matter that the bag was sent from India. It absolutely does matter: I counted on shipping duties from Japan. I’m ONLY ever purchasing from US sellers from now on.
@Luvluxbags
@Luvluxbags 3 ай бұрын
Yes that’s true a lot of sellers change their location to Japan. The best way to know is if the seller is in Japan and if the item is over $500 US dollars and has eBay authenticity guarantee then it’s from Japan. If over $500 with no eBay authencity guarantee, it’s coming from somewhere else. eBay authencity is available only from US, Japan and Europe I believe.

I think it’s unrealistic to expect close to full price in a “ used” item. Even if it’s in perfect condition. Why would I pay full price for an item when I can get it at the store and have a full experience with a store “ purchasing history .” I think sellers tend to be a bit greedy with their expectations. That being said, one can be reasonable and get a “ fair” price for an item.
@Wildunfiltered
@Wildunfiltered 3 ай бұрын
Totally agree with this. We as sellers have been greedy expecting too much for our bags whilst buyers have also been greedy asking for bargains - creating a gap of expectations. Stalemate where sellers won’t let items go for that price and buyers won’t buy at that.

I’m pretty new to luxury bags, retail or preloved. I waited and invested my money first. I look at the prices now and simply won’t buy some of them. It’s ridiculous. I’ve shopped consignment/thrift stores since I was in high school (a long time ago). I don’t buy anything “preloved” unless it’s 40-50% less than retail. Tbh most of the time it needs to be even more off than that. I’m rolling the dice on whether it’s a fake, a stolen item, damaged though the pics don’t show it, will I really be able return it if there’s an issue, etc, etc, etc. So I’m not taking on all that risk for 10-20% off retail price. I hope everyone is aware of economical cycles. Also trends. Ive been able to snap up amazing deals on fantastic quality goods, handmade, coutoure etc. For small change, i mean 5 eur/10eur per piece. Just because some people have no clue what good quality is nowadays, just what brands are in. I am also extremely stubborn and also very patient. If an item is not the right price for me. I have a budget, its a tiny one! And i will stivk to it 😊 please everyone also remember,physical goods are NOT an investment. Never have been, never will. Please have a look at 100 year old shoes😂 yeah a museum might have them but there is litterally no value apart of the emotional in physical goods. Edited to add: so if you love something and can afford at that price, why not get it? I think the cost of living has forced people to re-priorise what is now left , if ANY , of their disposable income , and they are focusing more on experiences rather than on luxury goods . I love my bag collection , but have found that after another hard earned splurge there is nothing left for anything else and it seems like precious life is passing me by ! I don't regret my purchases, love and use every one , but there has to come a point where enough is enough ?!! I still love to see what's out there , and always have a new beauty on my watchlist or sitting in my basket , and although I want to get to a point where my collection is complete in my mind the truth is there will always be JUST ONE MORE !! I'm not saying we should do anything drastic like suddenly sell all our collections , I think that trend is wasteful and ridiculous , but maybe start to recycle more and maybe reduce our overall consumption , less is more and all that ?!! 🤔😉 Another great video , my sweet 💓 Love all your content 💋💋 x

I think designer luxury goods are now more affordable than ever , thanks mainly to the preloved market , it's the cost of things like food and energy that have become disproportionate . It's getting to the stage where we are now starting to get the same kind of anxiety going into the supermarket to do our weekly shop that would have once felt going into a fancy boutique like Chanel or Dior !! The income of the middle ground , this previous high earners - big spenders has been diminished ! Wealthy people are not the ones buying these used bags. They can afford to buy new bags. Luxury is not buying somone else's used items. The lower to mid middle class are the ones buying these bags. The world is changing and the middle class is disappearing. They're finding it harder and harder to live at the standard of living they've been accustomed to. That is why the resale market has been hit.

Wealthy buy second hand just as much, from handbags to furniture, but they look for premium pieces, that’s why places like 1stDibs exist. But what brands have miscalculated is that even in luxury volume matters and their volume comes from a middle class with disposable income.

@@IceCream-hp7mm I've never seen any wealthy person I've known in my entire life buy second hand aside from antiques. 1stdibs may have a few wealthy people on it but they're selling, not buying. The ones who can't afford retail price are buying.

@@marlenepopov8469 the wealthy can hold off on selling until the markets pick up again, it’s the ones who need to get their liquidity back who are selling now.

@@marlenepopov8469in the states I once saw a news report that did a study of the most common car owned by suburban millionaires. Was it Mercedes, Audi, etc? Nope. It was new or gently used, Toyota Camry. Kinda makes sense, most wealthy people are wealthy because they are sensible.

@@rilethomp That is not the norm among the wealthy. You can technically be worth a million dollars but not be wealthy. Being worth a million dollars now is not the same as being worth a million dollars and living in the suburbs years ago.
