Social media is ruining luxury in my opinion. I wholeheartedly agree with, “Buy Less, Choose Well, Make it Last.” However, I’m an eco-optimist and only buy luxury secondhand to support luxury minimalism. Who needs a wall full of shoes and bags?! It’s crazy 🤪

I agree. IMO, social media really cheapened the value of the well-known luxury brands (Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermes). I switched to luxury brands that are not well-known to the public but are well-known to those in the know, and I carry vintage alligator, crocodile and ostrich bags. I also have a custom made crocodile bag that I carry as well.

Everyone's financial situation is very different. I get many ppl asking me how I afford what I do.... My uncle passed away and was a multi millionaire.. He had no children and left a certain amount to be given yearly to his nieces and nephews.. There are 20 of us My hubby is also blessed to make very good money Because losing my uncle is a personal and very sentimental thing to me, I've never come out and answered "how do I afford what I do" in a video Truth of the matter is: it's very different for everyone and we shouldn't be judging how anyone affords what they do...bc no one would guess how I do.. That's for sure Truth of the mark

As a fashion Stylist, that already walked around the block... Fashion should be fun and if the brands are not bringing the quality anymore (or are too expensive, as most of them are), don't waste your money... You are 100% correct about the IRS rules regarding businesses. If you’re not making enough money, the IRS considers it as a hobby. I can also fill in some secrets on how these influencers can “afford” these luxury items: - the items are fakes - they’re renting the items - they’re second-hand - they’re involved in activities that they’re not supposed to be doing

I’m in the fashion industry & my accountant will not allow me to write off my luxury goods, makeup or hair. He says lots of people get into trouble doing this as the IRS only allows you to write off things specific to a job where you will not benefit from it after. Makeup & luxury goods can be enjoyed after the job so does not qualify. Wish I could do it but I prefer not to be audited.
@mtngrl58592 жыл бұрын
Some accountants are more conservative than others. For example, Elton John can write off all those glasses, they are part of his act. If it is necessary for one's business, then it can be considered a write off. I'm in sales and I wouldn't buy certain clothes if I wasn't in my profession, but that is not allowable.

My sister married in to a very wealthy family, she could basically have anything she wanted money wise, but she was absolutely miserable. My husband and i always had to bust ass for what we have and she would treat me terribly!!! Come to find out, she was so jealous over my relationship and how much my husband loves me. She finally left him, and all of the money behind. She had to go back to work, and she told me she had all the money but she was DEAD inside. She would rather start all over with a lover who actually cares and loves her than stay rich with a husband who gave her plenty of gifts and money, but none of the important stuff like love, compassion, empathy, and intimacy.

Appreciate this REALNESS so much! It's easy to fall into the "oh my God, I must buy that too" type mentality, when watching the influencers... when the reality is that many influencers haven't bought these / return items etc etc. I think what I love about you (amongst MANY other things haha!), Dacob, is that even when you're doing an unboxing, you discuss WAY more than just the item itself. And not EVERY video is yet another unboxing. I was tempted to start a channel with an Hermès bag I got from FSH, but then I was all "But everyone else has better things, and QUOTA bags, not my mere Gold Mini Lindy" etc. Then I thought maybe starting with my LV Garden collection Neverfull.... and again, it turned into the "My collection isn't as good as...." etc etc. I 100% need to remember the influencer smoke and mirrors! And the "I'm a UK size 16", not a UK size 8, and no one wants to see that etc. You remind me that, just like TV and movies, Instagram and YT can be fakery! [Oh, God, I've written my usual tome. If you run your social media business correctly you can have many avenues in which you are earning top figures. I think as an audience we are all aware of how these influencers earn the coin to afford the consistent "hauls", but that well will dry up if their only content is luxury spending. Not many people stick with the same influencer as they evolve and mature. Priorities change and many social media product pushers have to alter their content. Some of the hauls you see may have been purchased a month ahead or have been put aside until a specific time in which there is a dip in views. Everything is strategic and if you are paying attention to the influencers you watch many will create content patterns. I am 43 years old and I have seen 22 year olds buying Birkin's, clearly there are an absorbent amount of variables at play, but it makes me wonder what are some of the stats surrounding consumerism patterns and age groups? I am curious whether marketing is creating FOMO more often in younger generations or is it impacting older cohorts more often? If anyone knows I am highly interested.

(USA) here.... A tax write-off is only if you are making money to begin with. If you aren't making enough to write it off then, it's a loss write off LOL. Also, uniforms cannot be written off anymore even for 1099's as in self employed. I used to be able to write off my scrubs for clinical days for my contract work (I'm a medical physicist). Not anymore. Also, paying your CPA, gets deducted the following year. In any event if they film it and talk about it they can write it off. However, recently, IRS said goods for work have to be kept separate from personal wardrobe for it to be a write-off. They are on them hahahahahaha. No more Dior to enjoy and wear around then just simply write it off.

Dacob you are the only luxury brand commentator I love to watch in terms of opinion and insight. Also I think your a darling and so much fun ! I’ve been purchasing some of these brands for many years and I’ve become very disillusioned with the quality and also conniving sales techniques of recent times. I don’t buy these items for status , I buy for myself and my own enjoyment. Some pieces are timeless and I defend anyone who is an enthusiast. As much as I love Chanel or Hermes bags, hell will freeze before I ever contemplate grovelling to purchase one. I value my dignity more than a Birkin. However , the more I see social media celebrities and read about peoples purchasing experiences I just cringe. If anyone tries to keep up with the Joneses, Kardashians or anyone else you’re doomed to misery and bankruptcy. This comes with age and the realisation that owning a few things made well and to last is enough. I update now and then when the need arises but I’m not obsessed with owning the latest anything. Look towards vintage for a truly fulfilling fashion experience and showing your own innate sense of style.

I agree with that comment mentioned by someone saying that it's sad that people base their self esteem on luxury items. I realize that some luxury KZbinrs appear to be insecure and have low self esteem. For example, they used to be poor, they used to be bullied, they are immigrants or minorities, they seem to have some sense of inferiority. (I don't mean to discriminate immigrants or minorities, I myself used to be a minority when I used to live abroad) I love my collection of luxury handbags because I think they are so pretty and I can enjoy fashion with them, but my self esteem and self worth are entirely based on things other than handbags. Also, a luxurious lifestyle is not only about handbags. It is a comprehensive lifestyle including various factors such as classical music, art masterpieces, Michelin star awarded cuisine, etc. I travel to Paris mainly to appreciate the art museums, and luxury boutiques are only a secondary purpose.

I understand what you said about minorities. When you're underprivileged, it's easy to turn into consumerist validation once you're better off, because these are traditional ways society gives the respectability we crave. It's a trap, one that we must be aware of.

How many bags does one person need? I have bought too much and am trying to pair down. I admit I get FOMO but am working on that - and - I do not envy the wealthy - many of them are miserable

Thank you for giving this insightful information. I was just really simply curious about this. How on earth can they afford all these??? Watching a couple of youtubers - they constantly, I mean, constantly buying birkins, kellys, high-end LV pieces, chanel, in all kids of colors and sizes, all these luxury jewelry, designer clothings, shoes, even home stuff... but then almost always, they have a video of them explaining how they are not "super rich" and they had humble beginning, they managed their money well to be able to afford things, etc. I mean the level of consumerism and spending - having major unboxing of so many items several times a month - it does not seem to be something you can do with just being smart with money. One time I was even wondering if one of the youtuber's husband was a pyramid scammer or something (as she always hides his face) lol.

At Scorpios in mykonos, every single young girl had a designer bag and most were dead set rented, borrowed or fake. Everyone was out there ballin but on the ferry ride back to Athens, there was only a doctor and a group of old ladies knitting sitting in business. Where all you kids at with the bottle service from last night?! Style is dead.

Too much faking if you ask me. I stay in my lane. Share my unboxings, keep it real, and keep it pushing. I wonder about some of these people too. Some are just so obvious though. I do know a guy on here who writes off his Rolex purchases. Pretty cool channel.

The article ... I don't really understand the claim about the tax write-off. In the US, it's not a big percent and nowhere near the dollar amount you'd spend on the goods. Just like if you give to charity -- the tax write-off is so small it's never the reason you give, it's more like better than nothing for what you'd do anyway. I'd love for you to dig and investigate how Mel in Melbourne funds her tons of purchases plus her husband's Rolex watch collection, plus their travels, plus raising two children ... surely she can't earn that amount of money on KZbin to pay for those endless unboxings. So it would be fascinating to know where the money comes from that goes out.

Taxes are so much lower in the US compared to most other countries though. In Australia where MiM is, the top tax rate begins at approx. $124,000 USD ($180,000 AUD) and is 45% compared to only 24% in US (did a quick Google, sorry if it’s wrong). Once you earn over $31,000 USD ($45,000 AUD) the tax is 32.5% compared to only 12% in the US and so anything you can write off is very beneficial. Once you finish Uni/College in Australia you’ll be straight into that 32.5% tax bracket and so everyone is looking to lower that tax bill in any way they can. I do like MiM a lot but yes, she buys big these days. I don’t know the expected earnings of someone with 300k subscribers - Dacob might though!

Mel did mention she buys her stuff at pre love stores & also at auctions , you will be surprise how some luxury goods w damage / stains on the insides can cost very little vs new ones
@debraturner45592 жыл бұрын
@@AnUrbanGypsy But for the purpose of this discussion, I'm just pointing out that a tax write-off isn't going to put much money back into a pocket so it can't be the way to benefit from buying Hermes bags.

@@saes2715 I still want to get to the bottom of how the couple makes money to pay for all their stuff ... as they spent millions of dollars already on all their luxuries, then keep going. It's not judging them to wonder how one come up with the funds to do it? It''s the missing part of the story.

Hey sweetie thank you for the hair tutorial! 😘Ppl don't just fly around in private jets lk is pic. in Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous those pics are publicity shots that come from ads for the plane themselves or lux goods. Do ppl realize how much the fuel cost?!! Ppl who have private jets (cough😁) take that cost into consideration & use these jets for business & special occasions. We don't fly to NY for dinner & the opera not unless we want to wake up broke tomorrow. I am doing these videos bc 1. I want to show off my bags. Not just to the whole world ya bc I'm excited but to ppl who ya know get it & maybe help someone else out in a decision. 2. Bc I'm a spoilt woman who has nothing else better to do. Truth. 3. Bc I am a spoilt woman who loves fashion but wants to b smart bc one day the money may run out. 5. I DO have a sug daddy yes I do & I have helped him maintain a healthy & happy life for over 23 yrs now. I'm his Mama Bear & he's my Sugar Daddy. He is 33 yrs older than me but will outrun the word of God & has to have a woman 1/2 his age to keep up with him. My ex beat my tail to the point I wanted someone stable. I did not let him tell me what he was worth he lives modest for his $$$$$$$$$ & after 3 yrs he couldn't stand it any longer & called me to the office for lunch where he handed me his financial statement in a way I had to read. It was his kindness that goes with generosity that attracted me to him a very self sufficient woman long before I would start accepting gifts much less support. You so remind me of a friend of my brothers I knew from a local college of course my brother who's drag name was "Tiffany Chanel" was my influencer truth be told yet their friendship ended the friend you remind me of when someone's care bears were mistreated (long story) & but I just luv ur passion & vlogs! I've thought recently about why I'm doing this & so glad you helped me to answer & lk I've seen with the bf & have done with my own projects in the past have to eventually ask myself where I'm going with it bc to ppl lk us we have no limits. I have categorized mine as a collection listening to you guys for the first time everyone else calls me a hoarder. LOL Preach your fashion darling we're all learning together. I don't mind being a one hit wonder making it on the top 100 @ #99 for a short period of time 😍🥰❤🌺everyone has their space & as long as we support each other that's great. I am a smart business woman myself so I know what I want to be a hobby & what I want to be a business but staying between the lines when they can easily cross up is difficult & sometimes have to work them around each other. But most my bags I pay for with casino jackpots. 😁 It spurs me on in the casino ya know. 😘
