The irony of Americans needing to use a VPN to get around US Government restrictions on a Chinese app. How the turn tables.
@woodchuck0037 сағат бұрын
It's not really that ironic when you realize that Tik Tok is the American version of Douyin and that you need a VPN in order to access Tik Tok from a China based ISP, much like you would for Facebook or Twitter.

I think banning it is trying to put a Band-Aid on a deeper issue. If they really want kids to detach from their phones, then 1.) there needs to be some studies done showing that getting children addicted to harmful technology at an early age could be considered child abuse or 2.) there needs to be a national program akin to Peace Corps that pays for young people to go out into nature for several weeks (planting trees, doing fire watch, other conservation activities) with the stipulation being that they cannot bring a smartphone.

I believe in education and improved standards of living. The negative effects are somewhat dampened by a robust foundation of knowledge, and people tend to be less glued to doom scrolling if they have fulfilling lives.

@NubsWithGuns I think all information being public is actually the best way to do it. Most things are hidden in plain sight and the only ones who have the ability to think outside of the sheep matrix that's around us get to use it for their own good instead of mowing down McDonalds after working 9-5.

It's a Chinese app whose name is a reference to Moa's Little Red book it will most certainly be banned. I hope the common ground us politicians have found around CCP aligned companies translate to attention to the privacy concerns and mental around US-based social media companies.

Chinese parts and electronics are in everything, malware is found in embedded devices added to consumer electronics, and many other similar occurances but now tiktok of all things is the major problem? What about the botnet China could have in the IoT devices sold in the US or the Chinese made parts used in the US critical infastructure?
@skatterpro4 сағат бұрын
The popularity of TikTok is far greater than the adoption of any IoT devices potentially residing in US critical infrastructure. The risks are several magnitudes higher when you consider that the devices TikTok is used on are used daily, are carried with us pretty much everywhere, are used both personally and professionally and contain tons of sensors that we willingly point toward things we deem important. Not only that, but it serves up endless streams of tailored data made to affect you in one way or the other. The main purpose of TikTok is to make fairly young people post huge swaths of video on the internet. They succeeded, to the detriment of everyone.

I understand the security concern. If an app has the potential to identify who and where children and family of individuals with influence are, and a foreign government has realtime access to this info, you could then indirectly get access to those parents and family members.

What microphone are you using ? Your onscreen microphone isnt plugged in
@buzzbros20028 сағат бұрын
At what point is it unplugged if I may ask? It looked plugged in the full time. The onscreen mic is the Shure SM7B from the looks of it, and the connection point is right by the mic stand attachment area, with it being connected by a black XLR cable. The cable comes out of the mic and over to it. What you may be seeing on the back is the switch settings, which are the bass rolloff and the presence boost switches. (NOTE: I'm not affiliated with Ali or Hak5, just a currently unemployed sound tech/editor who likes to share these things at times)

Eh... I'm of the opinion that bans don't work. I don't disagree with your criticisms but I don't think banning things is the solution. I think giving people something better to do than tiktok is the solution. To be clear, I don't know what that 'better thing' is but I think that's a more interesting conversation to have than 'ban tiktok'.
