We visited Grass Valley spur-of-the-moment on July 4th. Loved it. It’s beautiful and the people are very friendly! We live in Petaluma, lovely town, but two of us in a 600 sq ft condo is just too small. We signed the contract today for a place in GV and escrow closes in 21 days. Very excited!!

Thank you for the information and I’m pleased to know that Grass Valley and Nevada City is still the charming community it’s always been. I’m a former resident of western Nevada County originally from Southern California, lived in Penn Valley for 8 years during the 1980s, and graduated from Nevada Union High. Went back to Southern California in 1990 been living there since. Hope to come soon for a visit, my last visit was in 2012. Take care keep up the good videos.

Hi! I have been here about 7 years and I absolutely love it. And I love Penn Valley! It's a little hotter in summer which can be intense but I love all the land and horse properties and how friendly people are. I remember the 2nd or 3rd time I went into the hardware store in Penn Valley they knew my name and I was just so touched. That never happened in Sonoma County where I used to live. I need to do more downtown Penn Valley videos. I'm guessing it's changed a bit since you were here but I find Grass Valley, Nevada City & Penn Valley so charming. Downtown Grass Valley is just about complete on a full revamp of Mill St. They put these beautiful pavers on the road and made huge planter boxes out of giant rocks which act as benches as well. It's so pretty! I am actually going to film it this evening (we are having a heat wave today!). The video will be out within a week I hope. Thank you so much for watching!

My husband and I had a private wedding with just my 2 teenage kids at Empire Mine State Park almost exactly 4 years ago. Loved the area!!! Now we are considering moving and Grass Valley is on our narrowed down list of possibilities.

Great overview of your area. Sounds a lot like where I am in rural Southern Nevada, as far as things closing up by 9pm. Here there are some casinos there are open 24/7 but that's because it's Nevada and they can.

@@hermanxiomi5475 this is tough to answer.... it seems the price for everything in general all over California has gone up... Rent is certainly high and also good rentals aren't easy to come by. That being said, it just takes time to search and find a rental that works for you. Groceries have also gone up on price, not just here in Nevada County California. Here in Nevada County we have the regular chain stores like Safeway and several health food stores, which I'm sure cost more but also have better quality. I have definitely seen a rise in grocery prices. As for water, many homes here are on wells in which case you would only pay for the electricity to run the well. I hope this helps!

YES, it did! I already went😆. I actually love that our sweet county doesn't have a lot of big box stores, but the Kmart that was there, to me, just seemed really run down and had a depressing vibe to it. So I am thrilled to have the new Target in it's place!

Yes, the fires in California have made insurance very challenging! I do have an insurance gentleman I really like. He is genuinely kind and does his best to help. Text me and I will text you back his contact info.

I live in Mendocino county, had the same issue. Places locally here wanted 10k+! I go through San Auman insurance in Sacramento. About half the cost they got us for a farmers policy. And had to do extra to get fire. But in the end it was literally half the cost of anybody here in Ukiah. I'd imagine it's similar in GV

First, I am so sorry for your loss. That is such a hard thing to go through. I am not sure I can answer your question without more information.. but I can't imagine why this wouldn't be a good area for anyone EXCEPT it is not a good area to seek out a high paying career, particularly in the tech industry. Also, someone who wants to live in a fast paced city with lots of night life would not like it here. Other than that this is an absolutely lovely place to live. In regards to being a widower... we have a strong sense of community here, with lots of festivals and community events, although it does take time to settle in and get to know people. This is also an incredibly friendly area. I noticed that as soon as I moved here 9 years ago and my clients that relocate here also tell me how friendly it is here. We have so much nature (lakes, Yuba River, hiking trails) and all around it's a beautiful setting to be in if nature is comforting to you. We do have a lot of therapists if that is something you are seeking. There are a lot of retired folks (as it's a very relaxing and affordable place to live) and we also have lots of young families raising children. And every age and stage in between. There are also lots of opportunities to do things like take classes or learn a new skill, like at The Curious Forge where you can learn all kinds of art skills. I hope this helps. Here is a link to a site that rates things such as schools: www.niche.com/ I did not raise my daughter here so I can't say first hand about schools but I do know there a lot of people raising children here and there are quite a few choices for schools as far as public, private, charter and homeschoolers. We have a community college here called Sierra College that is quite popular. Here is the link: www.sierracollege.edu/visit-sierra-college/nevada-county-campus/ UC Berkeley & Stanford University are about 3 hours away. UC Sacramento is about 1 hour 15 min. Nevada County is a very friendly area in general. We have that small town relaxed and friendly atmosphere. That's one thing I love about it here... the friendliness amongst the community. There is a strong sense of community here.

As for the “gay friendly” comment in this thread I will reiterate it is my experience for the past 8 years that this is an incredibly friendly and kind town. I have noticed that Nevada City is more outspoken about supporting gay pride month and is the more liberal of the three towns. Grass Valley is fairly neutral and Penn Valley is more conservative, although not nearly as outspoken as Nevada City is. Penn Valley is a very sweet town with very kind people. Even though each town leans a little one way or the other, we have all types and views within each town. There are conservatives that live in Nevada City and Liberals that live in Penn Valley. I can’t reiterate enough that my experience is this county is very friendly and warm and has a great sense of community. I hope this helps!
