Hi Paul, What a great explanation! I am trying to explain this concept using your video to a friend but I got lost in the last part where you square the denominator (17:16 mins). It seems that you were making the equation of gravitational force (F=GMm/r^2) instead of potential. Can you please explain to me why were you doing this? Thanks heaps :)

I agree, that was a mistake. But then he goes on to say that it's not the number we care about, but the sign, which is positive. So if it's 2K/3 rather than 8K/9, in any case, it's positive. It increased with movement away from earth.

You are a very good teacher! :) Can you do a Video about the basics of orbital mechanics? That would be great!

When you integral (GMm)/r^2 it becomes -(GMm)/r. Notice that mathematically it becomes negative

But what means that U is always negative, what negative energy means?

It is more of a mathematical convenience than anything else. If you've taken calculus, you will probably remember that +C term you have to add to all of your indefinite integrals, in order to get full credit. That is because, there are an infinite number of functions that all have the same derivative, and in order to represent all of them, you have to include an arbitrary constant added to your solution. Defining GPE to equal zero at infinity, simply means that we opt to keep the math as simple as possible, and assign zero to the +C term, so that we don't need to think about what its value should be. As a consequence, because there is only one sign of mass, the only option is for GPE everywhere in the universe to never be positive. Ultimately, all we care about is differences in GPE, so it makes no difference what you assign to the +C term, as long as you are consistent.
