What is H.264 / H.265?

We get asked a lot of tech questions related to CCTV security surveillance and when we can we like to take the time to throw together a quick feature on some of these topics. One of those topics is the Difference between H264 and H265.

So h.265 will give a smaller file size, but will take longer to render?

@Joe S Yeah, on my PC with a given quality setting encoding H.264 is between about 6 (CPU) to 18 (GPU) times faster compared to H.265, given that I can't use my GPU to encode H.265. CPU encoding offers better efficiency (smaller file size) for me at a given quality setting, but also takes longer.

Hey there new to this game and just purchased an Annke PoE 8 port pvr h2.65 upgrading from my Anke 4 port h2.64 Poe pvr... and I can’t get the old camera that are h2.64 to register or detect on the 8 port Poe h2.65 pvr ? Can h2.65 pvr supportvH2.64 cameras all Anke brand ... must also point out very poor support from Anke website when asking the same question hence trying this site to try and get some clarity .. your help would be greatly appreciated

Hi 😊 sorry for the trouble I saw your video. I noticed that with Compressor exporting to H.265, my Mac Mini M1 heats up more than H264. it's normal? So exporting large files to H265 leads to more intensive use of the PC causing it to wear out sooner? thank you very much 😎

h.265 is a much heavier encode workload, so that isn't entirely surprising and it is definitely a CPU dependent task so it's tasking one of your largest heat sources directly.

Great question! The general rundown is: h264 = standard h264 h264h = higher quality h264 but more processing power is required. h264b= lower quality h264 but less processing power required. For yourself, it's best to test out which one yields the best quality vs storage space for your needs.

The quality loss between h.265 and h.264 is nominal at best, and is definitely worth the additional compression. We recommend using it whenever available.

well H264 wasnt made and H265 is the single most powerfull and most loved locomotive engine on the planet .EMDs finest . oh and yea some codec nerds named an encoding system after it
