This film is so beyond what people were ready for and that’s okay I love it. It’s about the shadow. Love and obsession. Overconsumption. It’s not about class really, but you do forget as you are wired to that the rich were still not self conscious people. They were consuming and consumed. I loooove this.

How? There’s no true reasoning or any build up for Oliver’s behavior. It’s not some film that’s beyond we are ready to see. People have seen weird shit. The film does not help us understand who Oliver is and the reason for his motivations. They’re leaving the audience out of the loop

19:42 that's how i am now with Destroy Everything You Touch by Ladytron, a song featured in the background of one of the early pub scenes. it was also featured as the lipsync finale on Dragula this season (which ended back in January), and the lyrics are a near-perfect parallel to a lot of what's going on in Saltburn the fact that Oliver admits to being a "vampire" and WAS, quite literally, *invited* into their home, only to slowly absorb each of their lives (and bodily fluids, in most cases)? simply brilliant, this movie is a masterpiece of modernizing gothic romance

This film was shot in my hometown. That giant mansion is here, though it isn't called Saltburn, and there's loads of similar ones all over the countryside here. I used to visit a lot of them for work about a decade ago and they're absolutely gorgeous but completely overwhelming.

This movie has lived rent-free in my head since the day I watched it. I understand the feeling about not liking the gratuitous violence and shock-value in other movies, but not minding it here, I think the difference is that it was done so masterfully, with such precision and so artfully done, that it feels like it fits. Like the shot of the bottom half of Oliver's face covered in blood after the scene with Venetia. The cinematography is just gorgeous the whole way through.

I’m having the hardest time understanding how they’re warranted, could you explain? Because honestly I feel like if it weren’t for those scenes, this film would not be really under the radar. @@DigiMystOk, hang on, even I wouldn't go so far as to say Saltburn's over-the-top scenes were the same as Human Centipede's. Ummm…we know Oliver didn’t have a plan the whole time as the bathtub scene isn’t about manipulating anyone. It’s solely about his feelings. Oliver is a compulsive liar and manipulator since childhood, he is at his best when he is successful manipulating others. That is why his confidence goes up at Saltburn. He has the Cattons. He has the garden scene with Venetia as that is what Elspeth wanted. She wants her daughter to get a boyfriend (or girlfriend) and cure Venetia’s bulimia. Compulsive liars give people what they think they want at first as they want to impress them. (It falls apart later of course.) Girl has bulimia and clearly hates her body. Oliver is loving every part of Venetia, even the parts that people think are disgusting. The grave scene, well…he was “in love” with Felix and he can never have him. Ever. Oliver wants love, he wants to be admired, he wants to feel important, he wants to belong where all the “cool kids” are and he won’t get that. Even though he has Saltburn now and does a victory dance, he will be miserable as there is no one else in the house. That’s what the grave scene says. He’s exactly where he was during the visit with his not drug addict mother and his not dead father. I didn’t think any of the scenes were pointless or gratuitous and for the garden scene, and several other scenes, while they are sexual, we actually don’t see anything. There is also commentary on our economic system, and it isn’t eat the rich. The VERY FIRST music cue when Oliver is introduced tells us Oliver will win at the end. He will be “The King”. Why do we revere kings who are these horrible people? Our system rewards the worst of us, the most. Isn’t that a commentary on how terrible our economic system actually is, and all the myths we tell ourselves about how great it is are actually lies? Maybe it’s our whole system that’s the problem. Also comparing Saltburn with Human Centipede? Really? Not all the countless movies with pointless gratuitous nudity of women? Come on. Is it the scenes “aren’t motivated” or is there discomfort with the female gaze in this film? Maybe, just maybe that’s why some people have problems understanding this movie or understanding how the scenes are totally motivated. They definitely tell you something about the characters involved in those scenes.

I think the fact that the set design/lighting/makeup/costume/framing were all so intentionally elevated accounts for why this movie is so enjoyable despite how shocking the actual plot is. It kind of overloads you with pleasant aesthetics to cover the harder edges of what you're actually witnessing which is a fascinating parallel for how the 1% use their wealth & power to cover up the realities of some of the more heinous things they do.

@@LadyScaper lol no Im a woman and feminist for all i know but the movie couldve been better if they didn’t add obscene sexuality every 15mins. We already knew olliver was weird because we saw him stalk Felix having sex before. He’s just perverted for no reason since what he wanted in the end was just the house not even Felix. It would have been better to have him intimidate the family without needing sex, the bath scene and sex scene with Farleigh added nothing to the story and imo kinda reinforces stereotypes of queer men being sexual deviants. Plenty things in the movie were great, acting and cinematography, but it would be better to maybe lean more into the social class aspect or his obsession with Felix, at least him drinking his cum water wouldve made more sense. Him drinking period blood didn’t add nothing to the story, the end felt rushed and disconnected and you just feel like the conclusion is Oh well i guess Olliver’s just a weirdo that wanted the house.

@@LadyScaperI mean... I think that's a pretty reductive way to look at it and isn't even really doing a service to the movie either. What about him slurping up the bath water or the grave scene is "the female gaze"? These are also both expressions of his complicated desire for another man, which is objectively not about the female gaze unless we're all going to pretend gay men exist for the female gaze. ETA: I'm also not saying those scenes are terrible or whatever. I just think that's a really dismissive way to boil down people's dislike of weird scenes that made them cringe (which is again not to say they're bad. they made me cringe and I don't hate them.)

I'm one of the rare right in the middle people on this movie. Was it bad? Not at all. Was it amazing? Ehhhh. I think it had a lot of amazing elements like the cinematography and acting but the plot itself was kind of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ to me by the end. I don't usually get hung up on these things but I just couldn't suspend disbelief for them not even mentioning a toxicology report for Felix (plus no mention of any trouble with getting away with the next murders), I honestly think I would've found the murders WAY more interesting if he had to navigate *some* amount of actually worming his out of getting into trouble for them. I think to me the shock value of the deaths is doing way too much of the heavy lifting for making them feel impactful, because once you know it's coming it's like "wait! hold on! we're just moving on now?". They don't actually show anything about how Oliver is cunning, because he isn't meaningfully challenged on any of them. It feels more clever than it is because there's nothing for him to overcome once he starts killing and reveals his master plan. In both the best and worst way, my overall reaction was just "what the hell is going on?"

The movie tells you at the very beginning with the first music cue that Oliver is going to “win” at the end. It’s an indictment on our entire economic system. None of the rich people are good, and the guy who gets rich isn’t good either. Look at the obscenely wealthy people in our society. Are they really good people? People even call them “geniuses”, when they are just artful scammers. Do we just lie to ourselves, to convince ourselves that we’re aren’t trapped in a terrible system? If Oliver got caught by the police it would defeat the point of the film. Sooo many people who are horrible scammers don’t get caught by the police all the time in real life. Besides, Oliver will be miserable eventually. He has the house but is all alone and no one really likes Oliver once they find out about the real Oliver. He will have nowhere to belong and no one to manipulate. He will be friendless and alone, just like when he was growing up and everyone got tired of his compulsive lying.

It was kind of dry, and I kept waiting for something that just didn't come. Obviously, it was others' cup of tea - just not mine.

None of the shocking moments felt gratuitous to me. I think the reason this movie pulls it off so well compared to others is that it's actually trying to make a statement. This is a movie that has things to say about class and the wealth divide. The cinamatography is fantastic and a lot of the shots feel very artsy. The shocking moments punctuate the feel and direction of the movie. I think they're entirely earned and the reason they don't feel cheap is because everything else around them is so good.

@@ThatSamoanGuyHonestly, I have seen be the “sweet unfortunate boy” in multiple movies. He’s good at that. I have also seen him be terrifying in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, but he has far more range then just being terrifying. Goodness even in Eternals he has this explosive romantic chemistry with another actor on the movie. Guy has range. Rosamund Pike has me so scared from her Gone Girl performance, I am too scared to see I Care A Lot.

There were things I really liked about the movie, the crazy, shock, and awkward momoments. And things I didn't like, the overall story and how flimsy the logic of the plot is.

Saltburn was alright, the acting was good and it looked (visually) great. But I found it to be a slightly "worse," boring and predictable retelling (not copy) of "The Talented Mr. Ripley." I don't really get all the hype.

Very strange film. I don’t think it’s good but I was entertained. But I found the cinematography was great but also contrived. Which is how I found most of the film -also I didn’t like the edit of this reaction, so many parts left out, and it went very quick.

This movie thinks its far more clever than it is. There's nothing here I haven't seen done better already. The performances are great, but the shock value scenes ARE for shock value because the plot and pacing grind to an absolute hault just so they can happen. ESPECIALLY the graveyard scene. And the "twist reveal" montage at the end...was that really a shock to anyone? I thought it was obvious from the second act.
