@@unkofi445 I mean, I´d argue he heavily romanticized his relationship with her. We know he got her pregnant and that´s why they got married. It's part of her on-going conflict with May as well and she's shown to have trouble admitting to others how flawed the system is, not to herself. Her motivation to stay a cop is specifically that she can't see change happening without cops like her being there and that people need cops like her. I similarly felt a lot of kinship when I discovered 9-1-1 last year, and its campy tone as well as found family elements really spoke to me through a difficult personal time. It really feels like a sincere attempt at an ensemble piece, and compelled me to write on ao3 after years of staying away from fandoms. Like you, I tune out the reddit threads and the more distasteful politics of the show, it's just much easier to enjoy that way. A recap series would honestly be great! What. The fuck. How did they think that was going to work out? The whole point of Maddie and Chimney is that he is the most even keeled, drama free character and she can rely on his steadiness and emotional maturity. He doesn’t yell. He doesn’t shout. He talks things over and is reasonable. The only time he sort of loses it is when she gets taken away from him, and even then his big emotional upheaval is to have an argument with his brother in law (justified, even if the punch was a bit too much) and to go looking for her with a one year old in tow. Eddie is most emphatically NOT that character. 🤦🏻♀️

for me i think the core of Eddies character is repression and its the reason we tend not to know about whats upsetting Eddie until it bubbles over and causes him to suddenly breakdown or act out. As someone who also has PTSD this is something i fall prey to a lot myself so I get Eddie. When we meet Eddie we are told hes perfect, thats how Buck sees him at least, but we learn pretty quickly that he isn't. Hes not over his wife, His time in the army, His family issues, His time in the church but he puts on a front. he's been used to having no one to rely on with Shanon leaving and his parents not supporting a lot of his choices. he's gotten used to having to stay strong for Christopher and It's only with his friendship with Buck we start seeing through the cracks. When he finally has someone who's there for him there's then someone to see him break or to keep him from breaking and thats how we begin to know Eddie and I'd say we do know Eddie is, He's a devote father, he's very capable, He's goofy in the way they all are, he's loyal, hes snarky and quick to tease, he likes a good time and hes deepy repressed. this is simply my take! ~ sincerely an Eddie Diaz Lover

However as someone who knows how actual 911 call centers operate to some extent, the fact that they don't begin with "what is the location of your emergency" is slowly driving me insane. (Location is super important even in our modern days of letting our phones voluntarily track us because even if you get disconnected before you can give any other information, they can at least send someone to check things out who can summon more help/the appropriate type of help. And if you're in an apartment building or subway station, they might know where you are in a flat grid, but aren't going to have your elevation just from a location ping on your phone.)

I’ve just gotten to your section on Lucy’s character and I’ve gotta say as someone who at that point was still pretty active in the online fandom, that actress was treated horribly online by fans. This fandom has a problem very similar to what Supernatural did in its early seasons: intense and nasty misogyny directed at any female character, and by extension the actresses playing them, who are perceived as an obstacle to their desired ship. It’s really frustrating to see. I would see fans on Twitter complaining and shouting “no one cares!” to this poor actress all because she was simply promoting herself in this new role. It’s especially sad when a lot of the people doing it were vocal buddie shippers, a ship I LOVE but have a very love/hate relationship with its greater fanbase because of how common that behavior is. This kind of thing was also pretty usual to see directed towards Taylor and her actress when Buck was still with her on the show, to the point where someone even stalked a child actress’s instagram for info on if Taylor was getting a backstory flashback, I kid you not, literally so they could “warn” people about Taylor getting more screentime. (And anyone who’s seen the show knows that never even happened for Taylor so…) Sorry for the wall of text, but I have MANY thoughts about this aspect of fandom behavior.
@jane-mulcahy3 ай бұрын
that sucks :((( I didn't think the character was that compelling but it's obviously nothing to do with the actress! like I said in regard to Abby and Taylor, unfortunately most fandoms seem like they haven't matured past irrationally hating any woman who gets involved with their favorite boys/interferes with their favorite ships, and unfortunately lots of people seem to have trouble separating fiction from reality and take it out on the actors. like act your age people jfc!!

Does the actress deserve the treatment she got? Definitely not. However, Lucy is definitely a huge case of hype backlash. I'm all in for more female firefighters in this show, but the way she's promoted by saying she's "Female Buck," introduced by starting a semi infidelity plot and then seemingly cut quite a lot of her scenes because of the backlash? Yeah, the writers are the actual guilty party of this mess. That is a HORRIBLE treatment for the actress by the higherup.

I full heartedly believe Eddie feels like such a badly written character because they haven't been able to do the actual plan they wanted to do with him. It all feels like it comes out of nowhere because time and time again apparently they've had to find excuses to avoid reaching the most natural and logical conclusion (a queer arc). They took all control from Shannon, she had such little control that she didn't even manage to say some last words (he literally shuts her up) and you're telling me it is all for nothing? He has a panic attack for someone implying his very beautiful, kind, amazing with his kid girlfriend was his wife and it is all for nothing? We know so little of him because I think that would imply answering the big fat question behind all of these story lines and my hope is that finally, fucking finally, season 8 allows us to get to the obvious logical answer, so that they can stop trying to circle him bad to nothing just to avoid getting there. Loved the character analysis btw! Sent it to my gf who knows nothing about 9-1-1.

1:37:25 I’ve always wanted to like Taylor so bad cuz she was really funny and cool for majority of her relationship with Buck (he lowkey screwed her over so bad) but I was never able to get passed what she did to Bobby in her debut episode. Trying to air his attempt on TV is deranged and cruel, I still can’t believe Buck even dated her after that
@pinkrainclouds21903 ай бұрын
At first, Taylor put me off with how she handled Bobby’s situation, but over time she became a bit more likable. Even though I didn’t agree with her actions, I get that the news industry is super competitive, and as a woman, she probably felt pressure to use whatever opportunity was in front of her to get ahead. I also realize my initial reaction might’ve been biased-if she were a man in the same position, I’d probably still think it was wrong but wouldn’t have judged as harshly or for so long, especially since she wasn’t close to the fire station or Bobby at that point. She just saw a story that could boost her career. Then, with the episode where Buck gave her proof of the serial killer in their team, it felt ridiculous for him to expect her to sit on that. A sane person would’ve either gone to the cops or investigated further using their investigative background, especially in her line of work. The fact that they were so mad at her for breaking the story right after everything went down didn’t make sense to me at all. It’s like putting a bone in front of a dog and expecting the dog to just leave it. I get you want to be able to trust your significant other with information like that but she has already shown that she would run with the information before.

I HAVE FINISHED IT AND NOW I HAVE THOUGHTS! I'm sick in bed at the moment, though, so not very profound ones. Here you go, in non-specific order: -I now understand why I see this trending on tumblr every other week, so thank you for that. -You referencing your own videos makes me feel like a well-rounded scholar in that regard. Why, well, the Teen Wolf video, of course. The Lifetime Wrong video, oh, who hasn’t seen it? The Degrassi video, absolutely, that’s a classic. (oh how i love being an intellectual) -Ryan Guzman seemed so familiar to me, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I checked his IMDB and hadn't seen anything he was in. Then it hit me: he gives off some serious Tiger Shroff vibes. Can’t explain it, but now I can’t unsee it. -I really liked the editing in this video, perfect mix of commentary and footage imo! Also, this is more of a personal preference, but I love how chill your videos are and the fact that you don't use a ton of memes and sound effects, but rather focus on your writing to entertain (which you succeed at!) -SHARK ON THE FREEWAY -Man, early Grey's Anatomy was sooo good. I eventually gave up on it too (I think somewhere after Sandra Oh's departure, which was the last straw for me) but the early season just hit different lol -"This could mean nothing" was getting funnier by the minute. -Thank you for standing up for the female showrunner. It's almost never as simple as "lone genius doing nothing but excellent work" and "talentless evil being who ruins everything". Also, retconning is my pet peeve, so season seven sounds exhausting haha -There really is something so comforting about network TV shows. My comfort show for the last few years has been quite ridiculous, one specific team from THE boomer cop show from my country, which also features intense homoerotic tension (unintentional on the part of the writers, of course). We only get one episode a year and they're all terrible. I love it. -SHARK ON THE FREEWAY -Loved the video! Glad to see you’re doing better now!

@@jane-mulcahyI think they're refering to 'Tatort', a german cop procedural. The concept of the show is that there is a different 'version' for every Länder (=german 'states') with different casts. From what I could gleam not knowing german, the version that airs on tv on a given night is totally random and only a few episodes are made per Länder... So basically If you watch every episode you'll get one taking place in Frankfur one week, then the next one in Munich etc etc The funny thing is, one specific Tatort version, the Stuttgart version, has a popular gay ship, but since you cant predict which episodes air when I guess shippers are just hoping and praying every week to see their blorbos (I think this is what the commenter is referencing here). It's also funny since Stuttgart is not a particularly exciting place in germany (i guess it would be like if 911 took place in uhhhh rhode island ??) 9-1-1 is one of the first shows I have ever seen to give the audience an actual narrative regarding gay fandom shipping between two presumably straight characters. Usually the audience is pulling at strings and tying unrelated ends to each other to prove the "ship" is real but the writers on 9-1-1 just flat out give you everything you need. It makes sense in every season they put out. And honestly, if the show doesn't make them canon by the end of it, I'd be VERY surprised. I also find it incredibly progressive that Oliver Stark was the one who was campaigning Bi Buck to the writers, since usually the actors become uncomfortable with the notion that the character they play is being headcanoned as "gay". It's a show that rids itself of any unnecessary and pointless longing and just gives you all the good stuff. If you hadn't watched the show, and just saw a scene between Buck and Eddie, you'd 100% believe they are together in the show.

the episode confessions,especially the priest’s monologue of Eddie denying himself joy, really cements that Eddie is gay to me. Even though ironically enough in the same scene he states he’s straight. I find it really amusing gay Eddie naysayers take that as fuel when the ensuing monologue makes it very clear the dude is repressing himself and denying himself joy. What could that be a metaphor for? While it’s true he experiences some joy by shaving his mustache and dancing in his living room, he ultimately has to take a larger life altering step to ensure real permanent joy in his life.

Still watching your video - and enjoying a lot of your takes, especially from a filmography perspective. I started watching 911 in 2018 and it has been incredible to see the little show that could gain so much more attention. In your character breakdown, I will add that Eddie was never an original character that was going to be added for Season 2. Ryan auditioned for another project and Tim liked him so much that he created Eddie for the show. I will agree that at times his character is a bit aimless or his storylines grow hot and heavy really quickly, but I do think they have a thorough line. When you consider that Eddie didn't have much of a childhood and was parentified at an early age, then a young dad and soldier - I see him being goofy with Buck and snarky overall as his outlet to feel the levity he never got to have. I think he struggles with his feelings around his childhood, teen-hood (including Shannon) which all led to him being a young dad to Christopher, that he pushes it down so it never seems like he regrets his son. So when something in his life doesn't go according to plan (Shannon dying, Buck leaving, getting shot, all the people he saved being dead), he's a powder keg of emotion and he doesn't respond the best. I don't think his issues with Shannon stem from him not being over her (they were barely together) but more from the closure he never got, he never got to fix all the things he thinks he did wrong. She can't forgive him, and I think that guilt and shame weighs on him (I may be projecting...we'll see lol). Anyway, I still haven't finished your video so I apologize if I mention anything you covered, but I wanted to at least add this. P.S: I also really love how they address Athena and Bobby's relationship issues at the end of S4 and I am praying they truly comeback to it and address it - because I think it still has the potential to return (like at the end of S7).
@daybydaylet3 ай бұрын
Sorry - back again lol. Got to the Shannon part. So I do think the writers do know how sad Shannon's existence was. Tim mentioned it when they brought back Kim and how she was a lighter version of Shannon, not plagued with all the stress she carried early on. And I do think Eddie is constantly reckoning with his guilt over how that relationship played out. Her part in it (which I think he sees through rose-colored glasses in order to punish himself and honor her memory with Christopher) and his part. He wasn't the best husband, I'll give you that, but she also played a part in their downfall whether intentionally or not (I would say it wasn't intentional on both ends). Eddie didn't want to go to LA with Shannon because he was recovering from being shot and rescuing his platoon. Shannon left and went no contact with Eddie and Christopher for over 2 years. Again, I don't think that full blame lies on one person, I think they carry that equally - particularly because they were so young, and any time they were together, it was fraught with stress and disappointment. As far as Michael, I actually do miss him. I miss his friendship with Bobby and the hijinks they used to get up to. One of the things the really endeared me to the show is how they portrayed a beautiful picture of a blended family with Michael (and then, David), including the ups and downs of navigating what their roles are and how the kids would adapt. I will forever be bitter that the actor took that way from us.

I like that Athena is a cop. I like that she has to grapple with her job, which she loves as well as her place outside of it as a black woman, and mother of black children etc... It adds a layer to her character. The problem is, is that like you said 9-1-1 doesn’t take itself that seriously. Though the subject of police brutality, copaganda, lack of accountability and injustice is a real world problem for black and brown lives. I don’t feel 9-1-1 is capable of tackling that issue in the depth we would all like to see. Not just because of the tone of the show but because of how nuanced and complex the issue is in real life. Athena being a cop and justifying police incompetence in front of her family and then going to her chief and telling her how surprised she wasn’t to find out no real consequences would happen shows the duality that people of color go through with systems upheld by white supremacy. She knows and understands what happened was wrong but she knows on the same hand that her job isn’t perfect and that even in all its imperfections she has at least from her pov done some good as a police officer. (How would you handle that?) That talk she had with Harry after he punched that guys light out in season 7 I think was a good example of what a black mother and a cop might tell her child. Do I agree with Athena all the time no, do I understand her and why she may feel that way? Yes. Of course my understanding can only go so far and if they went any deeper with this storyline’s subject matter there’s two ways it can end. I begin to resent Athena’s character or she quits her job. Resenting one of my favorite characters from the show would break my heart, and Athena quitting her job is an assassination to the show. It’s absolutely a good storyline and honestly I’m glad it’s there.

I love Josh, and the description of him as a silent movie actor is so funny, I always wished he'd have more dramatic stories because he's so fun to watch go through the ringer like when the dispatch centre got taken hostage

YES!! The music choices are genuinely one of the first things I tell people when recommending the show, I find it hilarious when they are so intentional about it. They also just use songs plucked straight from my playlists a lot of the time I swear, makes me love the show even more tbh CAMP IS LIFE

9-1-1 is literally one of my favorite shows. This deep dive was everything, however I realize that Jane did miss one of buck love interest, Ali the girl he meets during the earthquake and is with when the firetruck falls on him. And then she breaks up with him when because she can handle the stress of dating a firefighter

ugh it's true I realized that at some point while editing... tbh if she wasn't memorable enough for me to remember to include her then I don't feel that bad about it! I also forgot to do a dedicated character mention of Carla, which I feel worse about
