I have to disagree with your take on the virtue signalling thing. I've been watching the show since I was a little kid. There are heaps of black Time Lords in the show's history, and women, and there have been countless storylines that have been based around social commentary on all manner of things, from slavery to discrimination to, well, you name it. This is nothing new. Not sure what you have against diversity and inclusivity but jumping on the hysteria bandwagon and poo-pooing anything that dares to take a moral position on society is not only ridiculous but just a bit weird. Would you prefer it if the Dr Who universe had no gay people, pretended that America has always been a beacon of righteous truth and morality that looks after its people and whose only problems come in the form of outside threats and where difference or rejection of their claim to superiority is by definition evil? I'm not sure what you want. I agree that some of the storylines in the last series have been below par, but the best of all the writers is returning for the upcoming series and that should be great. However, this tiresome parroting from people claiming that it's social commentary or artistic metaphor and allegory that is the reason for them disliking something is just shallow and lazy and surrendering to those who are using culture war to marginalise and abuse those they don't like for their own benefit. None of this is new and to insinuate otherwise is just really ignorant.

The problem is though even when it was all wobbly sets when it was doing social commentary they were much more subtle about it and it didn’t let the sci-fi story get ignored so they could virtue signal. If you look at Jodie you can see it from the off, she was officially announced 6 months before Chibnall had actually started working on the show (he was busying wrapping up Broadchurch) and put together his writing room (as he switched from having a writer shape a script on their own with the show runner controlling the larger arc to having a US style writers room where you would have a head writer but the writers room was pitching in). How was Jodie the best person when he had no idea what his show was going to be. Infact by all accounts a female doctor was a provision he gave the bbc to take the job. What you then see through Jodie’s run is a showrunner with no idea what to do with her, apart from throwing in comments about shopping and clothes (which is somewhat sexists) her being female really had no impact. It’s why diversity casting of established character’s shouldn’t be something that happens first, it should be something that happens naturally because the story leads it. For example BSG is a perfect example of how you do diversity casting well, they didn’t go in intending to change gender and races, they did it as they broke the story. Starbuck for example who is male in the original was a character they struggled with as it kept falling into the rogue with a heart trope, that’s when they starting considering a gender switch and realised it opened up new stories and character development. It’s something doctor who and all shows should learn from, Doctor who instead didn’t and then doubled down on 'woke over story'. The Rosa Park episode is a good example of that, it’s a sci-fi show so the sci-fi even when going an issue based story should be at the forefront but the sci-fi element came across as a last thought and the issue based thing wasn’t even well done, infact it was full of pandering both Americans ego and BLM. Rosa Parks may be important to Us civil rights but outside the US she is basically meaningless, when she staged her protest most other major countries had their civil rights movements happen decades or more earlier. Black peoples rights in places like the U.K., France and the likes were NOT improved by Rosa Parks and the black civil rights people in the US. Yet there seems to be this trend to ignore civil rights figures in other countries and instead act like America was a leading force in it and all countries were as bad as the US was, it’s rewriting countries histories. And this episode just did the same, you had Brits treating her as really important, that they spent a good amount of time learning about at school and then when the sci-fi element finally kicks in we find the assassin is from racists in the future wanting to kill her because 'her actions stopped racism in the future'. Basically it’s just complete and utter propaganda nonsense. You could have done a good sci-fi story about racism without the laziness and pandering you saw in this story. You could have done the same story actually but much better by not painting her as the sole person responsible for stopping racism on earth and in the universe. Putting the sci-fi element first and having them looking to take out all civil rights figures that collectively all added to reducing racism. Should also be noted that there really should have been a reason for the gender switch. Regeneration cannon is that time lords do have some control over regeneration and they generally just become a similar looking but younger version, when there is a drastic change there is usually a reason behind it. The doctor just isn’t that good at controlling it, most likely due to running away without honing their skills but we have seen suggestions that he was getting more subs conscious control over it. If we had a reason for the change and hence an end goal the change would have not only been more accurate to the cannon but as viewers it would have made it easier to win people around. I just hope as RTD isn’t the hack that Chibnall is he has an idea of the direction he wants to go and this casting has a purpose and it’s not just being done for diversity reasons but rather story reasons so we can get back to good sci-fi stories that can contain social messages rather than social messages with a small amount of rushed sci-fi added on

@@SimonWakefieldUKHey, mate. Thanks for the considered reply. I guess I had you pegged as being a lot less informed and of simply crying 'woke' based on the female Doctor, and the other brief examples you gave of things you didn't really like. I just took it that you didn't know much about Doctor Who and were just one of the countless people out there jumping on the anti-woke train and cheering for Joe Rogan and others like him who think they're the beacons of rationality and common sense, but haven't got a fucking clue just how out of touch and ignorant they are, and don't have to care because, despite their angry dismissal of the notion of their privilege, they suffer no real consequences for any harm they may cause to others as a direct result of their words or actions. I had also just been subjected to a nasty verbal homophobic outburst a couple of hours prior to commenting, so I was on edge and so not up for tolerating bullshit at that moment. But I was clearly wrong and I will read through your take again and respond in terms of the nuanced and considered arguments you have made about the show (several of which I already know I agree with after a cursory scan of your reply). There are lots of things I didn't like about the She-Doctor but I wasn't going to engage in one of those 'it's woke, woke is bad, therefore the show is bad' exercises. People are taking that approach everywhere right now and it's causing some really serious problems.

What do you mean? I don't understand what you're trying to say, to be honest. Who does what with Africa/the world? And it's best you guys don't do anything to Africa, I reckon. Everyone still remembers America's first interaction with the African continent and its many different peoples and nations... Yeah, I reckon you should let them ask you for help if they want to. Otherwise, just be quiet and behave.

@@garros He is imho talking about the fact that the current black propaganda wants to paint white people as evil while ignoring black peoples part in the slave trade. Slavery has been the currency in Africa well before the Europeans landed on the Gold Coast. African 'realms' would goto war with each other and the winner would take the losers as slaves to either use or to trade. Black Africans were selling other black Africans to most major groups throughout history including to the ancient Chinese, ancient Egyptians, ancient Greeks and the romans. Black Africans at one point were regularly running raiding parties across the Atlantic to attack smallish settlements on Spain and Portugal for resources including white people to sell into slavery. When Europeans did land on the Gold Coast it was to buy gold, gems and metals from the markets and found vast slave markets, slave markets that existed not just on the Gold Coast where the Europeans landed but all over Africa both west and east. Without Europeans slavery would still exist in Africa, people descended from slaves would still be descended from slaves. Even if you get black groups to accept that slavery was a big thing in Africa before the Atlantic Slave trade they will tell you Europeans impact on slavery is something it’s not, they didn’t cause an increased demand, what happened was when trading for gold, gems and metals (and later slaves) the slavers would often ask for weapons as European weapons were better, this made it easier for them to take slaves without long drawn out and bloody wars as they had superior weapons which increased the supply of slaves, more supply reduces the price. That made it more affordable for people to own slaves, both in Africa and outside Africa and meant that taking them across the sea was increasingly viable as they could afford to lose way more on the hard journey and still make a profit. The more bought the more weapons and the easier to take more slaves in an endless loop. So Black people have as much blood on their hands as white people when it comes to slavery, slavery is a stain on all of humanity not just white people. A good example of the way though that white people get demonised and black people get to ignore their part comes in this growing campaign about education in a schools, black groups including black celebs like the British film director Steve McQueen and the actors John Boyega and David Oyelowo are pushing form 'black history' to be taught in schools. When questioned what they mean about this though their agenda becomes clear, do they want to teach about what life was like in Africa before the Atlantic slave trade? No they don’t. Do they want kids to learn about Black Africans part in slavery including the Atlantic slave trade? Do they want to learn about how Britain almost single handedly forced most of the world to abolish slavery (which is a fascinating thing that currently gets ignored at a school, you learn about The slave trade and the conditions as part of the module about the US but not the part that as Britain’s we should actually be proud of because as a country we took a stand when others wouldn’t even though by doing so meant undermining colonies in Africa where the leaders made vast amounts selling slaves ti slave traders, colonies at the other end which benefited from being able to buy slaves in big numbers and British trading companies that were making large amounts from selling slaves. It would have been easier and more profitable to have just just ignored it like France and co were doing. In something like 2014 we were still paying back loans taken out to buy every slave their freedom in British Colonies)? No what they mean is delving into even more detail about the slave trade from when they got put on the boats and that whitewashes Black peoples part in the slave trade. You can’t and shouldn’t be weaponising history so you can pick the best parts that paint black people as decedents of people who were snatched out of their bed in the middle of the night by the evil white people to push an agenda riddled version of history that does nothing but divide by pushing a sense of victimhood.

Let me put it this way I started seriously watching Doctor Who in the Jon Pertwee era , Damm I'm Old, and didn't miss an episode watching some seasons more than once but the Jodie Whitaker season 1 broke me and I stopped watching a series I watch for over 40 years so this new guy is a long way up shit creek before he even steps into the role so the fit the writers with shock collars and get someone to watch over them because they have burnt all their bridges and used up all their goodwill and if this guy can't make this role his own and be given good scripts to work with at best we may see another 20 plus year hiatus or at worst the end of the series

Shouldn't 'good writing' be the criteria for any Doctor irrespective of race or gender? Unless there's some kind of amnesia writers get when they see women or non-white people, I don't see why there needs to be a bar of quality to write for such Doctors.

The problem is we live in an era at the moment where the pressure is on to cast diverse first and then write around it. It was the big problem with Jodie’s Doctor, we got the announcement for her 6 months before Chibnal started putting together both his writers room and started putting together the lead writers for episodes. And by all accounts Chibnal when he was offered the job as showrunner insisted he would only take it if the doctor was female which was a further 6 months before the announcement. That’s problematic because how can Jodie have been the right choice when they hadn’t decided on what this doctor would be like, what the stories are going to be and what the tone of the show would be (and the tone was all over the place, it was shot and scored like a serious drama, with stories that were like after school specials, dialog that was stunted and everyone but Mandip Gill who plays Yaz acting like they were in RTD's era as showrunner (and Yaz did those first 2 seasons had basically nothing to do). And they couldn’t even come up with a way to make the gender swap seem valid, having the doctor make quips about shopping and clothes hardly provides viewed with a reason to embrace it, it should have been a way to open up new story angles and character development but it wasn’t because the story didn’t lead the gender swap, the gender swap was leading the story and boxing the writers in without a solid and complete framework to work in

That's the Episode I was thinking of when I made that comment. I'll admit I was wrong about their being slavery in the episode, and I appreciate you pointing out the mistake. However, the judgement I was casting was to my overall point about the show falling in quality by trying to push a certain message or narrative. I see you disagree and that's okay, I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video.
