I have HFC connected to my house. I am using TPG as my NBN provider and my plan was 100/35. TPG offered a free speed boost couple of month ago to trial for 6 month. My speed was increased from 100Mbs (I was getting about 96 Mbs) to 1000Mbs/45Mbs! I could constantly get speed over 900Mbs with a peak of about 970Mbs!! I thought to share this here as you were saying you could get speeds upto 500 Mbs with HFC.

Happy with HFC here. On a 100/20 plan with Aussie (best ISP customer support i've ever experienced), and we get 93.6/17.9 and it rarely drops from that even during peak periods. With the aid of a Ubiquiti Unifi Pro access point, we're also getting around those same speeds over Wi-Fi, so it's a huge improvement from the antenna we had on the roof with Uniti Wireless, and even tried out Optus' new 5G (as it promised to work at my address, but did not), that was an epic fail - walking around the house trying to get the Nokia modem's light to show anything but red/no connection. It was just falling back to 4G constantly. Speeds would hit 160-170/25-30 but then moments later it'd drop to 27-30/5-10, so far from stable. Agree with many posters on here. Aussie is by far the best. Not only are they local, but the call wait times are minimal and they actually call you back after any problem you may be having to check that it's resolved and you're happy. Now, that's what I call customer service!

Interesting stuff, do you guys have any PONs in Australia or use RFoG to replace coax and migrate HFC to a PON?
@bolehtahan
@bolehtahan 2 жыл бұрын
Two comments here. 1. Don't be confused. The coaxial cable is also made from copper. So then if you're wondering why it 'performs' better, it's because it is better shielded and was originally designed for more than just telephone services. 2. Four million homes is actually very good coverage. They key word here is homes, not people. There are probably around 8 million homes in Australia, so getting 4 million of them is about half.

Change back to telstra and after 3 call outs they had fixed all cable breaks in the 2 pair and the 10 pair and the 50 pair cables to the node. It took 2.5 years to get it fixed at the same time I re ran a U.G. STP CAT6 cable to the pit out the front and connected to it even tho I am 450 Mts from the Node I have gone to a speed of 70mbps which I get constantly through Telstra Bigpond

@Tech Man Pat while this is an older video I did notice you mentioned the issues with Power Outages. To help you clarify this and understand in a power outage all services running over HFC and FTTC will actually stop working even when you have a backup power source like a battery or UPS for example. The only service the NBN is able to ensure will continue to work in a power outage is FTTH and the key reason for this is simple when you realise that it's an end to end fibre optic connection so it uses the light spectrum so doesn't require power across the fibre it only requires power at the end points - consumer router/modem and Fibre Switch at the Exchange itself. All Exchanges have Residual Backup Power Units and in many cases even have capacity to connect external generators to supply direct power to them. So because the Fibre Optic data transmission from consumer to exchange is passive and requires zero power to use it will work during power outages provided the residence has access to a form of Power Backup for example UPS, A Generator, or maybe Solar Battery Packs. This is one of the key reasons the ORIGINAL PLANS for NBN had the majority of Residences being installed with FTTH. It additionally is capable of much higher capacity and speeds than all other forms offered under the NBN. To be clear FTTH scales to One Gigabyte with zero changes to the current infrastructure deployed and the only reason many aren't getting this speed is that sadly consumers are being rate shaped to lower speeds at the Exchange. However some exchanges may still have older equipment that is running Fast Ethernet SFP's (100M) modules, the newer equipment is deployed with all Gigabit SFP's (1G) modules. This equipment is able to support replacing the Gigabit SFP Modules with 10Gigabit SFP+ modules meaning that users who have FTTH will have the potential to have 10G connections to their residence while all the other options have issues even obtaining 1G connection speeds with the latest software, infrastructure and mechanisms. I did digress hugely there but people need to understand why FTTH is such a superior choice to all other form factors currently being offered. Back to the Power Outage point and why HFC and FTTC wont work in Power Outage circumstances is because NBN is taking over other companies networks and because of this do not have the ability to implement power resiliency across these networks. However they are able to provide a power resiliency program to networks they are directly involved with and provisioning - FTTB and FTTN to a limited degree so it's feasible that even these may not work in some locations if it was deemed economically unviable to implement power resiliency in that area. Finally it should be noted that Foxtel/Telstra (HFC) Cable Network actually has various forms of power resiliency implemented within the Main Metropolitan Cities and a good number of their surrounding suburbs. So while NBN has stated it will not implement a Power Resiliency Program for these networks when they take them over fully in the next few years it is still feasible that they will acquire the already implemented resilient power infrastructure which is deployed and was maintained as part of the Foxtel/Telstra program. So the statement by NBN that they will not be implementing power resiliency on the HFC networks means they just wont be deploying anything new on any extensions they make to the HFC network or to locations that currently have HFC but don't have any form or Power Resiliency Implemented. This means that it's still feasible for many people on the East Coast (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane etc) who have Foxtel/Telstra HFC to their residence or within their area may still have the ability to work in Power Outages because NBN will have to maintain and support the previously implemented power resiliency infrastructure installed by the previous owner operator (Telstra) as part of the contract. So it's kind of a wait and see but if you have a Foxtel/Bigpond HFC connection today and have during power outages maintained the HFC Internet connection with a UPS or Battery Solution previously then it will likely still be working with NBN take over the network in your region. As I said it's all in the wording of the contract and what NBN is saying they will and wont do with some level of ambiguity etc.

Do you know for sure and do you have any suggestions, please. I messaged Netgear on their recent live stream and they basically said I will need a phone line router. Hi Pat, I'm on nbn HFC and with Aussie Broadband with their recommended modem model at the time (Netcomm NF18ACV AC1600 WiFi VoIP ADSL/VDSL Wireless Modem Router - NBN READY) which they have changed recently I think. My phone keeps disconnecting from the wifi although all our pc's are working fine. I'm thinking of getting a longer cable to reposition the modem to another room. Do you think that will make a difference to my phone connection or is there anything I can do to that modem unit to up its signal strength (apart from having to invest in a wifi booster unit)? It is using a yellow cable to connect to the nbn black box - does it matter if I used a blue cable to reposition the modem? I'm in a single storey house, modem is in study at front of house, and my phone is dropping connection when I am in tv room about 50 feet away (open plan house, study has no door).

Hi pat David from Brisbane here just watched this video from match and I was wondering when you were talking about how various connection types of NBN will not function in a power outage could u do a video on the Priority assist service offered by telstra not sure of anyone else how offers it to ensure those with life threatening medical conditions such as myself will have a working phone line and experdite repairs to keep them safe. I myself am finishing a period of priority assist support with telstra and could not praise them enough!! After my NBN roughter reset it's self for the 10th time in a month at 10 pm at night a staff member spent over 45 min on the phone with me and I had a new unit organised and delivered in 48h and an interioum phone service delivered to my door to replace my faulty set up in less than 11.5 hours to ensure I was not left without a working phone. They are also providing me at no cost a UPS for my NBN roughter and phone and have agreed to cover the cost of my replacement batteries down the track. Telstra often get a bad rap In the media when things do not work out but in this instance they couldn't have been more proficient or helpful in managing my fault. 😃 this will encroage me to stay with and recommend telstra to others. 6:33 Actually the answer to that is no. I had FTTP put in about 2 years ago by NBN Co. There was no backup battery provided. I was never asked about choosing one. I watched the install and asked the technician about it; he basically said that it stopped being NBN policy to put in back up batteries with FTTP installs. It doesn't worry me much; I hardly get any power outages. Just saying, it seems that at some point 2 years ago or more that NBN Co made a cost saving decision to stop including back up batteries with FTTP installs.

Yes Foxtel are essentially getting moved, early days but if a Foxtel customer disconnects from the HFC network , they will not be able to reconnect, only with a satellite dish. This will free up the frequency channels that Foxtel are using. Also the HFC Bigpond customer will also be moved. On the Optus HFC network, NBN have trailed its use and are less than happy with it, Under maintained is an understatement.

Im on optus fibre cable coaxial to my modem. Now I am supposed to not use it and go back to copper lines? We cut out most of the copper lines when we renovated... optus ran new copper from the modem to the phone/paytv box. Can we pay to get our proposed fttc connection upgraded to co-axial similar to what we have now with optus?

Hey mate, I've been on Optus Cable for the past 11yrs and was very happy with the service. I'm now being told that my area is ready for FTTN NBN, isn't that going backwards? I was told for years Cable was my only option due to the distance and quality of copper to my home. Did you go from Optus cable to FTTN? If so how did it go? I believe that this home did have Foxtel at some time as I have some Foxtel labeled ports in the home, i'm hoping I can still stay on HFC...

@@jayisk82 We were on optus HFC cable and now we are on FTTC with aussie broadband. On FTTN The distance to the nearest node is what limits the max speed. The maximum speed on FTTN is 50-100 down. our old optus ports were not used and the nbn modem connects directly to the old telstra wires. The router has a phone line output for the home phone. I did not use the old Optus phone lines in the walls. From what I understand the optus cable will be decommissioned soon.

Aussie FTTC in theory is a better technology as the fiber goes right up to your driveway which means less copper involved. FTTC should be able to get speeds close to fiber in the near future and it will be an easier to upgrade to all fiber.

So what can we do with this horrible old cable TV network once we get fiber instead. Well you can connect a high powered VHF/UHF radio transmitter and back feed the cable and disrupt the service..yea I know you could pump hundreds of amps of current through the shield of the street cable, and burn it out? see smoke I know connect a high voltage power supply 33,000Volts ac ? and blow up the repeater amp in the street...that will be fun

I should have added that, those destined to a life on FTTN, should have their line capability tested, before signing to a high-speed plan, so connections, etc, aren't stressed, resulting in lotsa dropouts and other problems. Our 50 plan produces 35-47 down and satisfactory upload speeds. Tried 100, but speeds were all over the place, so reverted to 50.
