Thank you Jack for this video. My husband and I’m doing what we can in our back yard. We started last late summer fall buy from farmers markets with dehydrating. This year 3/4 of our back yard is a garden. I saw one of Tangi’s videos a few days ago where she was planting seeds in every open spot available.

homesteading is having a "Instead" attitude or approach to things. "Instead" of going to the grocery for food, growing what you can. Instead of relying on outside influences to shape our life we take charge and mold it ourselves. Insteading!

Thank you for the very informative vlog. As an urban grower I understand how "alone" you can feel. No one I personally know homesteads. And I think they think I'm a little crazy "growing my own food" when it's easier to go to the store and buy it, By the way, your Amazon wish list page works fine, but the Amazon storefront goes to an error page at Amazon.

I am an afghan from Pakistan . after listening to what homesteading mean I think I have found a term and a concept which was already at the top of ,,my objectives in life ,, list . already own 14 acre of land . I have worked in corporate culture in Dubai for 14 years and now trying to be a "homesteader" in Pakistan with the day by day increasing probability of a global economic melt down driving us to a conflict zone where we may head towards a third world war .. let's hope for the better inshaAllah.

It’s a return to agricultural ways! Our families farmed for thousands and thousands of years. It’s still in our blood.

My grandfather was a share cropper in sc. The gov offered farmland but you had to put up like 400 canning jars. My now 92yr old daddy pushed granddaddy to get the farm but he could not break out from share cropping. So at barely 17 daddy left to join the marines off to ww11. As it was granddaddy died in 1959 never to have a tractor only mules and plows. Even at 94 yes old and on a walker plants a garden. Daddy when in good health would have joined the homestead movement. He stills talks of time on the farm.

Interesting! My grandparents homesteaded their 160 acres in southeastern Montana in about 1915. For the first few years they lived in a dugout cave before building a small cabin. They lived and farmed there for 7 years before moving back to South Dakota. It was a very hard life. My mother was born out there in 1918. We still have the farm in our family, but the cabin is long gone and the only occupants on the land are the neighbors grazing cattle! Wonderful stories have come from that adventure☺

I learned so much from this. I deeply admire what you do here and how you share it with all of us. I didn’t think I could be a homesteader since I live in an apartment. I will think about some things that I can do with the space and resources I have. 🇺🇸❤️

For me, it started almost a year ago. But I knew for years that I wanted to go back and do as much as I could of the old ways. I’m an old soul, I do have health issues that limit me. We bought a cabin on four acres last September. It already had a chicken coop there. First thing we did we get that repaired and ready. We got chicks in February of this year. We’ve been getting eggs for about two months now. That’s a great feeling knowing that I did that. I raised them through the freezing cold winter in western KY. Now I’m seeing the fruits of my labor. And because of your wife’s videos on canning, I am now canning all the things from my garden. She even instagram called me one night when I was in a panic about pressure canning lol. I grew a garden this summer that just about killed because of my health and physical limitations. But again, I did it. I’m so thankful that God has blessed us with our little homestead and He’s helping me and teaching me everyday. My freezer is full and there are tons of home canned foods stuffed under the bed lol. Thank y’all for all that you teach others and for your godly example that you stick to. God bless y’all. Carol B. Aka, kypreacherswife

Thanks for making this I really enjoyed watching. To me as you both stated homesteading is based on self reliance and sustainably. Putting myself in the shoes of the original homesteaders it was a time where people didn’t have much money and couldn’t rely on conventional ag and the large amount of jobs that are available to pay for standard necessities. Making your clothing food, and items made at your home to be traded or sold for currency. My grandmother who was a homesteader in the south born 1920 used make all of her clothing from spend sacks of grain, grow all of her fresh food, and preserve it as well. A barter based economy were a large part of homesteading. To me homesteading is anything to do with providing you or your family with life necessities either from your home and or your farm. A valid piece of homesteading that I didn’t hear mentioned in my opinion is the craft aspect. Building and or making things with your hands that can either be sold or traded is one main aspect of how I would define homesteading. For some this isn’t always the case but for me being anything you can do that allows you any independence from the traditional social structure of having a job to pay for everything that you rely on is in the spirit of homesteading. Homesteading to me is true freedom and liberation from the clutches of having to rely solely on a cash based economy.

You’re right it didn’t exclude but they were very bias towards a certain group. 1.6 million white families both native born and immigrant succeeded in becoming landowners during the next several decades. Only 4,000 to 5,500 African American claimants ever received final land patents from the SHA.

Yep, your probably right about the bias, especially back then, but many different people were able to participate and did. That was definitely a step in the right direction.

I want to have my own Ovo Vegetarian homestead :) I don't believe in killing animals but it could be because the meat/dairy industry beats their animals and terrorizes them and i know you don't do that, I think homesteading is much more ethical and so I am here to watch and learn but will probably skip any dispatching episodes :) I don't know why but when I saw you know 1870s homestead I got all excited, haha. Hope you don't mind my comment, not trying to be offensive, it's just how I roll :D

Homesteading is being able to fully or mostly take care of yourself from your land. growing up My great aunts and great uncles used to have a homestead and everything they ate pretty much and survive off of was from their house or from their land. Now they traded with other people. Sometimes they went to the grocery store to buy something here and there, but the majority of their survival was from their land.

I think the biggest part of "homesteading" more than anything is working with what you have. It's looking in your pantry, seeing a jar of green beans, flour and oatmeal and asking yourself "what can I make for supper out of this?". Homesteading is not WHERE you are or how many pigs you butchered but more of HOW you are. Being resourceful is probably the most important characteristic of "homesteading" (not a big fan of the term because for most people that live this way, it's just life!)

We have been homesteading for a long time, it started living in town with a big garden. Then we moved to 1.25 acres and the garden tripled in size and we started raising cattle and once my mother in laws dog passed away I got chickens (the dog killed chickens). Then I was given a pair of boer goats and my husband got a Llama. We moved to 3.3 acres and had a huge flock of chicken's and a few ducks the goat herd grew as did the Llamas herd. Something happened to the Llamas (we think snake bit them) and they died. I was overwhelmed with having 52 goats and sold off the herd and I did the same with my chickens. We kept the dogs and cats and took a two year break. I couldn't have a garden here because of ground squirrels destroying it, then I heard of chicken moats and started researching. 3 yrs ago I had my son and 2 of his friends help me put together a chicken moat made out of dog pens and put the garden space in the center. Well it works! I have a small garden area and chicken's again! Fresh produce and eggs! In June hubby and I drove 300 miles up north to pick up my first dairy goat addition and on our way back picked up 2 more, so we have 3 goats again (no bucks). Next year we will be milking again and making mozzarella cheese! My next addition plan is a miniature Jersey (if I can find one in the AZ desert) and expanding the garden by making the moat bigger. It is a slow process, but by adding a little bit at a time it helps. I plan to sell the baby goats after they are weaned so keeping the herd at a more manageable size. I need to learn how to pressure can. I have my mother's canner, but she never taught me how to work it. That is our homestead. We also have been homeschooling for 14yrs too.

I love Laura Ingalls's books. I am reading about her life. The pioneers were a part of our country. My family were pioneers as well as they came over on the Mayflower. I am a "homesteader" in the fact that I am living in the city while still trying to keep my family going with garden foods, and fresh meats/eggs when we can get them. I make my own tomato sauce, I freeze my own peppers and make chicken broth from the bones of the chicken I buy. I grow my own herbs. We are looking at farm homes now. We will be moving into our "forever home" soon. I am learning from you, the Pratts, the Beals, Big Family Homestead, ….. So many great you tubers. Thank you for the video and the help. We are not alone, we have help through this community.

I grew up in an agricultural background. We never really put a label on what we did. We used the word “homestead” to describe the acreage that (great, great great, etc.) grandparents settled, farmed and raised their families on and then passed down. I totally believe it’s sustaining family, land, livestock, etc. it’s not living off of the government.

that was a good intro song. !! 🎵 🎶 🎼 _What makes your garden grow ...Water and Sunshine_ 🎵 🎶 🎼 😎👍 there are so many types of homesteading going on these days. 1) Traditional homesteading 2) Modern Homestead 3) Backyard Homesteading 4) Urban Homesteading / Apartment Homestead 5) Hobby Homesteading 6) Frugal Homesteading 1:10 Thanks for the Education on The Homesteading Act, 2:05 didn't know that bit about the Black Americans & homesteading. By 1900, immigrants, settlers, legitimate or otherwise, had gobbled up 80 million acres of land through the Homestead Act. To make way for the homesteaders, the federal government forced Native American tribes off of their ancestral lands and onto reservations...can you elaborate on this ?? cheers

What homesteading ment to us in 2009 is totally different from today. In 2009 we were in survival mode, Joe had become I'll and had two TIA's ( mini strokes) and let go at his Job, He was on a "permanent vacation" being told once he was 100% he could come back. He will never be again. Over the years we have learned to make it a lifestyle not a survival situation. Today homesteading means providing a better future for our 2 grandchildren, teaching them what we have learned over the years.

to me, a homestead is really the ability of surviving without going to a store or town. even though my you tube title has homestead in it, I don't believe a homestead is a reality anymore. some say modern homesteading and ill get on them about it some times. true homesteading would be 1700's Kansas maybe, isolated Miles from any where or anybody and having to survive by hunting, keeping seeds from your previous garden, etc.. maybe there should be a new name for it in these times? I also believe, maybe not in our time, but it will be close, due to climate change by us humans, major production will shut down and people will be forced into homesteading and not using powered equipment.

Ok so from what I farther from this, homesteading is mainly having a food garden. I was wondering what exactly this meant. I’m 36 and get up with my mom and friends mom and my grandparents on both sides, aunts and uncles having food gardens and or chickens and turkeys. I have had for gardens at a few places I’ve lived. My brother raised a few pigs and now has a garlic farm. My grandparents, uncle, and brother are hunters. My spouse is going to start hunting. So basically I’ve been around this lifestyle forever and didn’t know it. No dance T-shirt or social media channels for any of us though.

Nice video, I am living in Norway, and love to get ideas and watch homesteading channels. I bought an acre of raw land, in the woods, and spent 1,5 years with applications to the county for building permits, I live semi off grid, so that means I had to drill for a well and get a sewage system. Because of cold winters, and our laws of energy saving, I had to build a low energy home, really thick walls and ceiling, extra insulated, and another costly thin was that I had to have a balanced ventilation which heats the cold fresh air with the used air leaving the house. I was not allowed to use a composting toilet. Happy with the solution now, but it has been a long and expensive road. I have built a small house (1200 sqf) and a big garage/outbuilding. Moved in, in Jan, so this summer I have not had time, or the money to start my garden. I have planted a cherry trea, a gift from my mother, blackberry bushes and some redcurrant bushes, My raised gardens is yet to be built. Have some leftover materials from the housebuild, but working full time, single mom, I have not had the time, or energy to do it yet. Slowly I will get there. My dream is to reduce my working hours in the future, and develop a smallholding/homestead with chickens and some of the produce we need, will also do canning. For me, I feel that my homesteading dream has changed and developed as I´m going. It is a mindset of using what you have, repurpose things, be more moneywise, repair things and not toss it away, moving away from the impulse shopping and being happy with what I have accomplished so far. I make all meals from scratch, going out to eat is now a rare treat, I buy locally, fom local farms, I have just picked raspberries in a neighbours garden, and have ordered half a lamb this fall. I too love the Ingalls saga. I think I must have been a pioneer in a previous life. ;-)

So many channels have talked about what modern-day homesteading means to them. A year or 2 ago Rose, over at Wholesome Roots, did a video titled something like "AM I A Homesteader? ". I really liked her in-depth talk about what homesteading means to her, and what it could mean in various situations. And about having a homesteading heart. What I really liked about your loose definition of what homesteading means, is that you interview several others that consider themselves homesteaders. Not one person said that this is THE definition of homesteading. Instead everyone talked about what it means to them, and what it could mean to others in different situations. This video is a great starting point for people who are trying to figure out what modern day homesteading is, and what homesteading meant historically.

Great video! I grew up on a farm. I lived in town for nearly ten years as an adult. I’m over it. We moved out onto nearly 100 acres a year ago September and I could not be happier! My kids have quickly picked up plant identification, we walk daily out in our back property and pick fruit and explore. Next spring we will start a garden and get some animals. I seriously cannot wait to be self sufficient! We live in Oklahoma in tornado alley, an EF 1 went through our pasture in May 😳 Little house is life goals! 💗💗💗 The world needs to go back to some old ways before it falls apart.
