Impostor syndrome is one of the biggest problems in web development and programming as a whole. With the vast amount of technologies, languages, and frameworks to learn it can be incredibly overwhelming, which leads to a feeling of not being good enough. You feel like eventually everyone will see that you do not belong and you constantly struggle to overcome that feeling. Since there are some many things to learn in tech it is not possible to know them all and it is important to remember that. There will always be people more knowledgeable than you in certain subjects, but that doesn't make them smarter than you. You will almost certainly be more knowledgeable in your own subjects than they are, and because of that you should seek out these people you see as smart and learn from them as they learn from you.

Kyle, in case you wonder to read some story that comes right from the opposite side of life(globe), I'm gonna share it with you. First of all, I have to thank you for the great done work - it helps me a lot! I would highly recommend to everyone to go and pay for your courses immediately. It's worth paying. My story: Sometimes shit really happens. I was born in russia and I've been dreaming to become a doctor since I was 14. I did well in school and got to a university (general medicine). To get better education, I moved from russia to Prague and got to a uni for a second time(the same faculty)That was really hard, but I felt like I am a pro at what I do... One day, I was robbed by my family member and it literally ended my education and career in medicine. Yes, that sucks. I had nothing to do except to move back to russia(cemetery of all talents) and after being chased by Russian Military Forces (they wanted me to join Army, regardless of my opinion and wishes) for a few past months. There was only chance to save at least my relationship (married)... me and my wife now live in Ukraine. So, I'm 22, I got no money and I kicked out of my field... well, life gave me a second chance with programming. I fell in love with it a year ago, so I decided to turn a hobby into the life-saving work. I am sure it's clear to you, why I am watching THIS video. It still hurts somewhere deep inside of me, but you helped me and the entire story was written to prove how important your work is. I wish you all the best on your way, Kyle.

I am 46 years old, I have been doing all kind of odd jobs never finished school never found happiness in my jobs. I started learning web development about 4 months ago I have finished HTML CSS that was no problem but when I get to JavaScript it became overwhelming and I have decided to quit several time but watching positive videos like this one that keep me going and I know I will make it soon. It just matter of time and hard work. Thank you very much for your channel.

Javascript is definitely the hardest part of learning web development since you really have to change how your brain thinks to be able to think like a computer. I promise though if you start small and expect to fail constantly as you slowly figure things out then you will be fluent in javascript before you know it. Just remember everytime you fail it means you learned something from your failure/mistake which will make you smarter next time. That is how we all learn.

It's only because there's so much to learn, if you start now u have to learn all kinds of stuff wich have progressed in tech in last 10 years. Googling stuff will scatter your brain as well, too much info on the same topics, best place to learn is from official documentation and by practice, syntax and theory are useless if you actually don't try to make something... human Retention is the highest by doing... You just can't memorize entire syntax and instantly remember, overtime you get crystallized memory of syntax. I hear a lot, that best way to be on a good level with vanilla javascript (new coders make mistake jumping into frameworks too quickly) , is by creating DOM elements by hand in JS... i did it, and im def better off because of that, if you arent proficient in vanilla, you have very vague skills... frameworks always popup and die off when time goes on, but you cant never take away core fundamentals... (and many languages are very similar) ... for example few of my friends who are proficient in more than 5 languages sayd to me that adapting from JavaScript to Python is easier than otherway around, since Python uses ident as part of syntax... var newPara = document.createElement("p"); var add_news = document.createTextNode("The latest news goes here."); newPara.appendChild( add_news ); var getFooter = document.getElementById("footer"); document.body.insertBefore(newPara, getFooter); insertBefore( newPara, getFooter ) function appendText() { var newText = document.createTextNode("New Text"); document.getElementById("latest").appendChild( newText ); } Well, you get the idea... go thru creating and manipulating all html elements. You learn way more than just reading syntax... All the online courses i see basicly "teach" something you can just read from reference sites... voicing official documentation isn't teaching (eventho this channel explains and dumbs down concepts really good for people who are new and eager..) I'm always cringing when "tutorial for beginners" videos, teaching frameworks to people who have no grasp on vanilla JS even how to make an app via "hello world" and making it look so easy that everyone can do it...

There's an absolute wealth of good advice in this short motivational video. One of the most important points is not to feel discouraged if you're the most junior member of a development team. Instead realize that this is an opportunity to learn from your more senior colleagues. Early in my programming career I was lucky to share a small office with four senior engineers for a year and during that short period of time my knowledge of computer science and programming advanced by leaps and bounds. The project was intense, difficult, and at times traumatic. Some days I dreaded going to work. I was involved in operating system and networking design and at the start of the project I barely knew what those things were. I knew I was in over my head and at times thought I would be fired. But I persevered and the effort helped launch a 23 year software engineering career. So when the going gets tough, and it will, hang in there because you're growing by leaps and bounds.

But then I remind myself that I'm already ahead of so many people, even with just the little knowledge I have... and helping people learn topics I understand, seems to be very helpful in boosting my confidence.

Thank you. This video came out just at the right time. I am struggling with stress. I feel overwhelmed all the time trying to keep up with everyone around me. Even now I am in summer vacation, I just cant help myself thinking about how I would survive the next semester (not to say, 3 years ahead), when my classmates all seem to be experts at different fields, while I am still trying to figure out what I should learn. I know my grades were good enough, but it's not enough for me to feel secured. Changing mind completely right after watching your video may be impossible for me, but it helps. Thanks and wish you the best^^

Your channel is one of the best "tech-How to" channels in KZbin, I'm glad I found it. I am having the same issue that you explained here in your college first year ,I seem to be very slow with Java Script, I understand the basics but when it comes to solving algorithms, I just can't seem to run my head around it. Please make some more videos on JS topics especially the basics as well as how we can put them into use while solving any coding challenge or algorithms.

Thankyou so much for making this video. Your description is 100% accurate. The people who are confident are sometimes just faking it for the attention. Those people may also be horrible teamplayers and can't take critiques on their code. So even if they are experts: companies don't want them and screen them out. They need people who are flexible and able to be trained. People with imposter syndrome end up working 10x harder to just impress people, so you are actually more hirable than the experts are since you overprepare so much.

This is a really good topic to discuss! Everyone feels it now matter how good you are, at least that is my opinion. I've been coding for 20+ years and hav an impressive resume and other developers wish they had my knowledge but I can get on a team with all superstars and I feel the pressure too and it really affects me mentally and psychologically. Not everyone can be a superstar and this is why you need to find where you fit in best too but at the same time, trying new teams that may not be a good fit gives you an opportunity learn something new. At age 55, there are new challenges too that I never thought about until now. I've learned that you can you can be the near the bottom on one team and be a superstar on another team, so find you place, it is out there.

OMG,why I didn't watch this video 3 months ago😢 Kyle you are gold. I didn't realize that I am currently suffering from this syndrome until you bring that up in this video. I have exactly this feeling when I am learning how to code. There are oceans of new frames, new libraries and new techs which makes me feel overwhelmed and discouraged. "I guess I'll never make any achievement in coding", I always say that to myself and it begins a vicious circle in my head. After watching you share your experiences and opinions, I really feel relieved from some burdens and regain some courage to keep on coding. You are the only KZbinr, at least in my opinion, who is not only good at what you do but also concerns about programmers/code lerners' mental health in your work. Your words and videos have just made coding more humane and added some warmness to it. Thank you Kyle! Huge respect from China.

It's a good video for us beginners. I think you're very right that we're often blind in that way. If I look at myself a few months ago who doesn't know JS at all, I still learnt a lot and got better. Sometimes I read stories like someone takes 4-6 months of study and gets a job, I just feel that I'm not good enough. But it could be just it's easier to get a job where they are. It's best to see we've learnt things and we're still learning, and forget about the rest. ^^

That is so true. The only comparison you should ever make is to your past self. It can be easy to forget how far you have come especially when you see so many other people doing so well. You just have to remember where you started and know that as long as you are improving from that start point than you are doing well.

I went into a computer science at university with almost no computing or programming background at all switch from engineering after doing one programming class which I had fallen in love with. Particularly for the first 2 years I was terrified that I would be found out to not be true nerd, that they would find out I hadnt been tinkering since primary school. truth is I didn't even own a computer until highschool and had no internet connection until half way through high school and I was almost computer illiterate through primary school and early highschool but I had chosen the right degree every thing came quite naturally for me. I still get imposter sydrome today however not as bad even while having a reasonably high gpa.

Nobody is good at all especially in programming languages . I want to be the agent of changes that I want to embrace and bring contributions to the world that history can erase through coding. This is something I can really relate to, I can do both design and programming with JS, PHP use HTML and CSS too but I still feel like I'm not good enough to work in the industry as they all want you to use frameworks and libraries and stuff and I only know vanilla stuff and I can't keep up with all the different requirements they're asking for.

I wouldn't worry too much. I was able to get my first job with no major framework knowledge. I had never even heard of react or angular or vue at the time. It wouldn't hurt to look into learning the basic concepts of one of these frameworks though. They really do make complex applications much easier.

@@WebDevSimplified I should look into them, I just like doing stuff from scratch but I agree a basic grasp of them would be a benefit. Thanks for the video, really helped put things into more perspective by the way.

Please make a series for competitive programming/data-structures using js....there isn't much on the internet using js for competitive coding and data structures.I know you have some videos related to this but please make it comprehensive
@WebDevSimplified

I personally am not much of a fan of competitive programming since I find it not very enjoyable and not applicable to what a job style programming involves. I do however plan to cover some data structure/algorithm/design pattern style video as I have done in the past.

I joined a company to work as IT few years ago. So we had some induction classes for programming and testing. Comming from a graphic design background i was struggling and i saw that for some people it was a walk in the park so i got really nervous! I tried to take notes, understand, and code a lot. I even had the bad luck to catch a major flu but went to work anyways. Final assesment came to check how much we understood and i was the lowest in 15 persons. So after that i was sent for a web dev position and things went bad too. I was surrounded by people with experience, i was struggling to learn, even after work hours and on weekends. After some time i got released by that position.... Time passed by and i ended as service desk... Itwasnt bad, yet not my thing. In the meantime i continued studying web dev stuff on my own. Nowadays, after two years im on email dev possition, confident because of the appreciation i have from my bosses from the time and experience. The story is a little bit more complicated than that but this comment is long already. I think yall get the moral of the story.

That is a very inspiring story. It just goes to show that no matter what anyone else says as long as you work hard and push yourself you can get anywhere you want to be.

Is that an Ibanez or a Jackson behind you Kyle? I play the guitar too. I bet a lot of programmers also play an instrument, it's a creative nature we have.

It is a Jackson. I haven't had nearly enough time to play it since I started this channel so I really don't know much beyond the basics :( I am hoping to get into it more soonish though. I also agree with you on the creative nature of programming. A lot of people come to programming as a creative outlet and play some form of instrument.

@@WebDevSimplified Nice mate, I like the Jackson guitars. I've been playing for years and the best advice I ever found is... practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice, makes perfect. Try to play every day even if you only give yourself 10 minutes. Your channel is one of the best on KZbin to learn web development and I can see it becoming really popular because the content is beyond excellent. You just need to advertise more to help people find your channel. Keep up the fantastic work, it is very appreciated Kyle.
