Impressionist paintings are among the most loved and celebrated artworks of all time but what is impressionism and who were the great impressionist artists?
Often referred to as the ‘first modern movement’, it was born in April 1874 when a group of young artists defied the official Paris Salon by setting up their own independent exhibition. Including works by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissaro, Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot, it became known as the first Impressionist exhibition.

I am not a trained artist but started painting for relaxation and my hubby constantly says what I am doing is impressionistic. I don't plan anything and I let the canvas show,me what is there... Don't know if that makes sense... 😄 This video helped a lot! Thank you...

I am reading Woolf biography by Hermione Lee and came across the word ' Post impessionist ', though I am acquainted with Claude Monet, Digas, Van Gogh, now seeing there paintings I get a clear idea of what impressionism meant, now wish to see some Post - impressionistic paintings. what an ignorant comment, both impressionism and realism require the same foundations. Putting more detail into a painting doesn't make it better.

too often in the amateur world, poor "painters" tend to call their work "Impressionism". I just call it "Shite!" or "Shiteism"
