What is Inter-VLAN Routing in a Stratix 5700

In this lesson we are going to talk about inter-VLAN routing using the Allen Bradley Stratix 5700. We can use routing to segment traffic between different Ethernet networks or VLANs based off of the device's IP address and subnet. This will prevent traffic from one network from being seen by another network. While devices on different VLAN segments cannot communicate with each other directly, an Ethernet switch with "Routing" features can route traffic between the different VLANS which is called inter-VLAN routing.
In this example we route Ethernet traffic from a network with an IP address of 192.168.10.XXX to a different network with an IP address of 192.168.20.XXX.

Being a IT network admin throwing my foot over the PLC fence this is good stuff. Networking like PLC’s is a whole world of acronyms, methods and functionalities. Switches are my favorite! VLANS are essential in segregating networks and cutting down broadcast domains. Discussing layer 2 unmanaged / managed and layer 3 switches managed switches is a great idea. And not to get into the weeds but talking about tagged, untagged and trunking is great. Also getting into LAGS In this industry is a great idea for a resilient reliable network for mission critical applications.

Tim Wilborne you did fantastic and your analogies are super helpful in why VLANS are used. PLC networks especially multi plc system should all be using vlans and in their own subnet. Having a layer 3 stratus that can route between those networks is super important and should help keep the layout simple. Otherwise your always at the mercy of the IT guys.

VLANs can also be used to improve network security by separating the broadcast domain of the IT and PLC equipment, and using routing rules to control access between them.

Hi Tim, I've started getting more advanced use of this switch, and would love to see more videos. Just bumped into you site. This may not be the place to ask, but I'm going to any way because I am having trouble getting an answer. I am setting up a Compact with two separate I.P.s; .30 & .107. The VLan .107 for PLC & Panelview, the other for .30 for Private VLan, i.e. drives. This setup is for security and ability to get into network from any place and make PLC & Panelview changes. First attempt at networking. Thanks

Hello Tim, I'm currently working on a site in California that uses a similar model of Stratix switches. I was trying to understand more details of the advanced configurations on these. Tim's Network explanation is awesome ! Please, I'v a question regarding the configuration of the stratix, when it comes Brandy new, all ports come with a default network i guess, and what's the way to modify or assign each Port of segment following our own configuration or material as shown, i.e, is there any software or webpage that allows to connect with the device. Thank you 😊
@TimWilborne

Yes it is configured via a web interface but know that there are several different Stratix switches and many do not have these features.

both your networks are 192.168. but what if I have 2 completely different networks like 172.24.128.x and 192.168.25.x, can i still route and communicate with these networks?
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne 23 күн бұрын
Yes. 192.168.0.X and 192.168.1.X are completely different networks the same as 172.24.X.X and 192.168.25.X are. Note how I left your 128 out. That was a class B address where 192 is a class C address. Google "ip address classes" for more information.

@@TimWilborne Ok Tim, I'll' check my newest one tomorrow. Question on your BOOTP, I used it to replace the address on a RIO block. After it accepted the address, I tried to confirm that it would remain static but I'm still not sure. I never got a clear cut yes or no on whether BOOTP / DHCP was disabled. That is a useful function but was not able to make that happen. Any thoughts?

Tim it's obvious you know your stuff but when communicating with IT people, terminology is important. You called the netmask the subnet. Oops. Why don't you explain that the netmask determines how much of the 4 octet address forms the subnet address and the remainder is the node address on that subnet? You also didn't really explain your routing table in the Stratix that you setup that lets you ping other devices on other VLANs which is important because just because you set up separate VLANs, they won't communicate unless you route them properly. More advanced topics would greatly explain many of these items that were skipped over. Thanks for all the time you take creating thess videos. Networks are a mystery to a great many control electricians.
