When I played in San Diego years ago you had to own an SVT to get any good gigs. It was the only amp that would sound great onstage and carry all the way to the back of the room. A couple of bass players that came out of that scene back then were Nathan East and Jason Scheff from Chicago. Jason’s Mom was our agent. She went by Mrs Roberts which was her maiden name. I remember her telling me her son was also a bass player and really good. He was only 15 at the time. When I did finally see him he blew my mind.

Back in the 80's my Guitar Teacher had 70's SVT with a 8x10 cab. The first thing I did was help retrieve it since I had a truck. I was questioning needing such a heavy rig, but then I got to play it in his basement. Truly an experience to hear (and feel!)

I'm 64, nice to see you younger generation enjoying a staple from my day, btw, I'm not dead yet. When I played professionally, guitar that is. I used an Ampeg VT22, with a Ampeg 2 x 12 cab at 4 ohms impedance. Then I would slave out to an Ampeg V4, but with 6550 tubes instead of the 7207a for the power stage. The V4 drove 2 Ampeg 8 10 cabinets at 2 ohms, the sound was awesome and thank god for roadies. I've since gone digital but that was my favorite setup of all time, over any other setup I had before it. Now quick history lesson, Rolling Stones used Ampeg as well as Canadian rocker band, April Wine. And there are so many classic bands as well as new, where you will see the SVT. Traditional SVT was always light grey Molex, but once you've seen and heard one, you'll always recognize it's shape and sound no matter what the colour it is.

I've been around SVTs for half as long as they have been in production. I've never met a player who turns one down as an amp option. The weight of the head is only exceeded by the weight of the original 8x10 cabinet. So nice to see two musicians reveling in a 50+-year-old design. Ampeg got it right and still hits home today. Great video. Loved the different styles and instruments.

I first saw one of these ( with 2 8x10s) in '71. I was in a band sharing the stage with another band and I could not believe anyone would need such a beast. I played in a reggae band 15 years later at a concert and they blew one up, just before I went on. I had a 10 lb Walter Woods 300 watt hand-built solid state amp and that amp and one cabinet (8x10) provided the juice for the rest of the concert. I love SVT's but I will never own one. I've played bass since '67, and still play now. Age 73....

You HAVE to demo the best combination EVER!? Stereo Ricky with bridge pickup fed to a dirty Marshall guitar amp and 4x12 for grunt, and the neck pickup sent clean to an 8x10 SVT rig for bass. You would need a lorry and a road crew to take it anywhere, but that is the best combination of all time. Very Chris Squire ... or King's X!
@Magikflame
@Magikflame Жыл бұрын
When I buy a new bass and have done the 'I've bonded/I'm keeping' thing, the first mod is a stereo jack followed by a reamed out nut to take the heaviest gauge BEAD strings from a set of five because I just love the 4 string bass. Splitter lead to each Fx, pre-power&cab signal chain. Hopefully One day the neck will be via an early SVT and pair of 8x10's or would I just need one of the v-4B cabs for the B string? (I actually after playing EADG dropped by 2 semitones for that long do the same now, so it's actually a low A which I'm pretty sure Ampeg could handle

Fantastic video! You really captured the essence of why bass tube amps deserve more recognition. I have a rare Italian model that's celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and I even did a video about it. It has been my go-to amp for the past 4 years. The tonal quality and durability are unmatched, and it works perfectly with everything I plug into it. Transistor amps are great too, but they'll never really be my soft spot. Thanks for shedding light on these amazing amps!

The reason they came with 8 10” speakers was because 8 were needed to produce a low E wave off the face of the cabinet. The original came with two cabinets. The very early models would catch on fire if the bias was far enough out of phase.
@kenschroeder9283
@kenschroeder9283 2 жыл бұрын
So the first thing they do is dime the preamp and make it distort. To me what the SVT was about was big powerful, clean tone, with no mudding out, which it does in spades. An SVT with a Ric is the most monster full, ringing, clean Entwistle tone. My definition of perfect bass. . Sitting around in a music store totally ignores the point of an SVT. For that get a B-15.
@timkbt
@timkbt 2 жыл бұрын
@@kenschroeder9283 Back in the mid ‘60s I missed out on a ‘63 Jazz bass with a blond bassman for $250. A used B15 would sell for about $150. The 360, Sunn 2000s an SVT two cab model sold at Sam Ash for $995. The Sunn was a big mud bucket. Worst bass amp I ever played. I bought a Haynes Bass King II because a friend talked me into it. The first SVTs had major issues and would have cost a fortune to keep up. These models had the chrome tops on the power tubes. The Sunn was real reliable.

You needed two cabs in the seventies because those original cabs only had 30 watt speakers in them which added up to 240 WRMS per cab, but as long as you didn't really crank the head you were ok. They never caught on fire, if they were dimed continuously the power tubes would glow cherry red which is not good for them. The early ones had different power tubes and were actually more powerful, I have three heads, one 1970 and two late 70's heads. No preamp gain on those, just a volume, the preamp was fixed to a certain output, the old ones are very high gain, at about 10 or 11 o'clock depending on the bass you will be shaking the room.

@@kenschroeder9283 agreed, but you can sort of appreciate how for younger players for whom this kind of kit is a rarity, that they don't really know what to do with it. the idea that you need a gigantic 300 watt tube head to play clean is alien in an age when you can get a 500 watt class D amp which fits in your back pocket

My pride and joy is a 90's era SVT iii Pro, through a 15" cab with a 4x10 cab on top. BUT I played a gig once many moons ago where instead of both of us lugging our gear into the club, I used the SVT iii pro with an 8x10 cab that the opening band's bass player was using, and it was the most enjoyable bass playing experience I've had to date. I don't know what tubes he was using, or if any mods to the amp had been done, or what speakers he had in the cab, but it was the bounciest, fattest, growliest, grooviest bass tone I had ever heard, straight into the amp. It sounded so good it was literally almost like the amp was cheering you on with every lick or run that you hit :) So yeah, I'm an Ampeg fan :)

I don't pull it out for every gig these days, it's not always practical for some of the small venues I play, but every time I do I get more looks and compliments on my tone than any other time lol. It's lovely knowing i'm heard instead of banking on the random sound guys at the venues I play. this thing is 100% worth every penny. truly incredible. Yes guys! Love your work. It’s been a fair few years since I’ve had an SVT, but hitting that overdrive brought back the memories, and lol @ the decibel meter hitting 100 on 2! One of the great things about the svt is as expensive as they are, they always hold their value. After 4 years of gigging with mine I traded it for a bassman 100 head and a late 80’s thunderbird. The bassman wasnt a SVT at all but I loved it for what it was and it weighed quite literally half the amount. Nowadays though l, tbh I’d go for an SVT 3 pro with the class D power amp stage instead and save myself like 25kg lol

Owned a 1976 SVT with the corresponding 810 cabinet decades ago… to my ears, it was a big powerful tube amp, that had a ‘grungy majestic’ sound like it was ‘emanating out of a big tank’… and when it was on for a while, the tubes would do it’s thing, by making the low end very ‘pillowy’… eventually ending in sonic ‘compressed romantic mush’ by the last hour operating… I also remember you could fry an egg in the back of it after a couple of hours on… while it was a great tone for ballsy rock, I don’t miss the Weight, Nor do I miss the Repair Bill when the tubes had to be replaced 💵💸

Never had the SVT, but I have a 70's V4b that I bought brand new. Never thought I needed the SVT because the V4b can almost do what the SVT can do. But Ampeg tube amps in my opinion have the best bass tone of any bass amp. I have had Bassmans, Harke and Mark bass but they came and went. My V4b 215 cab I will never part with.

Great rig. It's even better with that beautiful Rickenbacker!! Even without the neck bindings and mother of pearl inlays that bass is gorgeous. And of course, it sounds awesome too, especially through an Ampeg SVT!!!

Please listen to this demo through good headphones or a car speaker system. Dinky phone speakers don’t even touch 1% of the badass bassness.

@@dragonmac1234 I saw Motörhead at “ Wigan casino” and yes it was that tone I Heard Geddy Lee bass lines in the clean but yeah Motörhead or hawk wind ( if your old enough to remember them 😊😊😊) when cranked

@@pauldncn1 I'm 58 so I'm old enough to remember Hawkwind. I've heard some Rush songs and I like Geddy's clean sound (although I do prefer the more powerful gritty bass tones that hit you like a sledgehammer) 🤘

In the 70s the SVT was only available with two 8-10 cabinets. Now that was a bass sound you would never forget.

Have the SVT 2 pro with the 610 hlf cabinet. Also a beast of a setup but extremely heavy to haul around.

Nothing sounds or feels like an SVT. One never forgets playing through one,or lugging it up two flights of stairs at 2:30 a.m. The other drawback is it'll cost the price of many decent class D bass amps to re- tube.The price one pays for greatness.

Just recorded some bass in studio with an Ampeg Silver Face SVT, one of the proper classic style ones, with a Barefaced 6x10. Both the overdriven sound and clean sound was some of the best tone I've ever heard. Shame the amp is backbreakingly heavy, otherwise I'd have run off with it! - Great video!

Have one, but I think there is something up with pickups on Peavey Cirrus bass, seems weak, will start to get static at times and drains batteries when not using. Beautiful bass, bought it used a few months ago
