I’m happy that Ryan spoke up about the experiences that some black women face when dating. It’s true, it does happen and it is difficult. Even doing language exchange, it’s difficult to find a partner that isn’t ghosting you or sexualizing you (which turns into ghosting when you don’t give in).

Curiosity can lead to dangerous acts. I understand their curiosity is innocent but boundaries are also an act of education. They need to know that you are also human and don't like your hair touched like other humans that wake up and spend time doing their hair in the morning. Sarah Bartmaan's abuse also stemmed from curiosity. Just be mindful of that.

I was legit thrown out of a restaurant in SK for having darker skin. 🙅🏾‍♂️ After I paid for the meal, I sat down to eat and the guy said I had to go. The dining space was full of natives so I was confused at first. I would love to come on and speak about my experience some day to spread awareness ♥️

@@KBCREWprobably the language. There are many white men who got rejected from restaurants, bars, clubs, stores too. Many Koreans don’t speak English, some Korean staff feel annoyed to accommodate foreigners, especially if they are busy (I.e. the restaurant was already full of natives). Even Koreans get rejected by some restaurants and stores for various reasons (kids, senior, over 30, ugly 😂, foreigner, Korean, alone… ). These places all have their own reasons, so it’s not just purely racism or colorism. I got rejected at a restaurant last month because I was alone 😢 Oh, you could have been rejected because you are alone. If the restaurant was full, that happens a lot.

When it comes to the hair conversation, it doesn't matter why they're doing it, you still shouldn't go up to people and touch them without consent. There is no excuse for being touched inappropriately in anyway, my entire body is off limits.

Used to live in Korea a few years ago and actually dated 2 Korean guys. There was great chemistry, but mutually we didn't feel compatible. I definitely agree that it's easier for foreigner men to date Korean women since there's less pressure on Korean women to continue the family legacy compared to Korean men. I think it's rooted in patriarchy too. I feel Korean men experience more pressure to meet the expectations of their parents and marrying within their race. I actually give much props to Korean men who partner with non-Korean women as they are confidently their own person and don't care about trying to please their parents. Or, they just come from a really open-minded and accepting family.

For the hair convo the first time I ever saw a poodle I still didn't touch it without permission from the owner so for old people I guess I can understand but for regular adults I think they literally just forget we're humans just like them because why do they have less pause or the same amount of waiting to touch us as they do as an animal in the zoo😂🤦🏾‍♀️

Oddly enough, the best customer service always came from older people being excited to share their knowledge and culture through their products.

To add to this, after reading some of the other comments, I think having these conversations is not just important, but essential to have on a public platform like this. As someone who loves to travel and is considering moving to Korea for my career, I have to be prepared and aware of the situation I'm putting myself into. It's the same for when I moved to the US, UK, or lived in Europe. I want to hear the experiences of people who look like me, and even though I acknowledge each one of us are different and will have varying experiences, I want to be aware of any possible situations (for example, about the hair, where there seemed to be a consensus) so I know not to be surprised and equip myself appropriately. Doesn't make me any less excited at the opportunity to experience this wonderful place, just better informed. I also highly appreciate the honesty when speaking about the dating scene differences between Black men and women. They explicitly mentioned the underlying societal pressures and norms that contribute to there being a distinct difference in our experiences, which is important to know about. It definitely didn't come across as a slight to Black women to me at all, but as an acknowledgement that social structures (and stereotypes) exist that contribute to permeate into different inherent 'privilege' (term used loosely as it isn't necessary always positive) when it comes to dating. Doesn't make us any less beautiful, just better prepared.

I am European. Shortly after moving to LA I went to have a hair cut to a beauty salon operated by Koreans in Korean Town. Apparently, I must have been the first non-Korean they gave a hair cut to. They were amazed by the texture of my hair I guess and they all came over to touch my hair. Another incident that I experienced in Korea Town, was when a friend and I attempted to got to a Korean restaurant, we were told that the restaurant was only for Koreans and we were turned away. We ended up going to a Thai restaurant across the street. They were more welcoming there.

I wouldn't take it too personally, Asian countries, just like Eastern European countries, they just are anxious around people, very different from them. But you probably don't realisee that, the Prejudice you receive, is only sommewhere in the middle of the different groups receiving such treatment, and there are several other groups who receivve much more hostile and negative perception, which, I will breakkdown here. White people are perceived as very similar to their own skin colour, because eeven though there are darker skinned Asians, so many of them are using products to lightenn their skin tone, and especially in the media. Asian people generally have a very pro-white, westernised aaesthetic value point, even above their own race, simply because of movies for the last hundred years, but also because of the greater masculinity to the features, in the West, but particularly "Western" Europe and Anglo-Saxon like US Western nationals. As far as Western black people are concerned, there prejudic is purely a feeling of the unknown and media perception, as well as a skin colour, which is simply perceived as "more"different from theirs, than white. Ultimateely, the privileg, Western black people have, over many other groups, is you still have the masculine features, which means you are definitely perceived more positively than "Southeast" Asian people, which encompasses hundreds of millions of people and who northern Asians(Japan, South Korea, much of China), so have the "most" prejudice against, because they "Traditionally" perceive them as of lower standard, less refined and also sharing the same child-like, effeminate features, that they have a lower opinion of aesthetically than your more masculine features

@@MissEileenL it is still a negative assumption that can easily become a self fulfilling prophecy because as a black woman you start assuming that they don’t want you from the start and that will obviously affect whatever relationship you’re trying to have. Let Korean men speak for themselves and enjoy the process of getting to know people for who they are. If it works it works, if it doesn’t move on to someone who will love you for you.

You literally missed the point and just went on ranting about something you clearly do not even understand because I'm doubt you've been to Korea if you're talking so impulsively. What he stated was the fact and not HIS negative perception of Black women. Nobody said Black women are not beautiful or anything. Yes we cannot categorise everyone in one aspect but as a black woman who lives in Korea it is true that it's harder to find a Korean man who's genuinely interested in dating you. WHY? Because 99% of the time it's just you being fetishised, or you being just an opportunity for 'experience' or just for fun. And if you listen t what he said he stated that 'it's easier for a white woman to come to Korea and settle down with a Korean man' why because white and pale skin is the beauty standard and there's no point beating around the bush because that's simply a fact. Why do you think Kpop idols bleach?? why do you think most of Korean celebrities edit their skin in pictures out to be whiter??? because it's the beauty standard.

@NightAn93l
@NightAn93l Жыл бұрын
It’s cliche for a reason. Korea is the most homogeneous country in the world and some people go their entire lives having never seen or met anyone who wasn’t Korean. There is also a very strong social hierarchy. Most young people will address you before trying to interact with you, but if they are older, especially noticeably older, they kinda have free range to treat you how they want because they aren’t expected to show you the same kind of respect. That being said, it’s almost always harmless. Since respect is literally a part of Korean grammar, you will always know when someone is deliberately trying to disrespect you by the way they talk to you.
