Correction: He was nervous about joiking in public(he only used to joik with children where he worked) so he was given a tip to "see all the audience as naked women lying on reindeer skin", it's not like his inspiration for the joik was naked women.:>

In Saami/Sami culture the tradition of the joik teaches that the the song (joik) is non-different from and not separate from the person, place, or object being sung about. To joik is to relate to, to live in intimate response with all other sentient life, seen and unseen. When we joik, we are talking to a lost loved one, a distant friend, the sky, the river, our ancestors, the snow... we are bringing them forward for all others to relate to, as well, as their very essence resonates through a space. The song is the vibrational ISness of beings.

Very nice - can we get videos with the other two members of Keiino as well? (How he learned to play the guitar, since when she started singing professionally, who does what when creating a new song together,...) Also: could you maybe do a series, as soon as the new songs for ESC 20 will start coming out, with Alex's opinion on them? I think she's a real ESC-geek and I'd love to hear her take on the songs! All her videos for ESC were so lovely and I enjoyed her enthusiasm for the songcontest so much! (Still am impressed, how much she knew, recognised and could sing herself!)

I am not from Lapland, but born in nordic country I think I can maybe open the joik or joiku a little deeper. Joiku is a similar as the throatsing in MongoliA mend to send a message over the valley or in calmer tone tell the story of the family at the fireside. Joiku is mostly of a story telling I'm understood.
@ashentrena70823 жыл бұрын
Hei ^_^ I have learned from Sámi people I met that saying "Lapland" is rude, an insult, because "lap" was a very negative word used instead of "Sámi", which is why in this video when asked about something in "Lapland", he answers speaking about "Sápmi" instead. I'm sure you didn't mean anything bad and it was an interesting comment, I just wanted to spread a respectful way of saying things I learned myself after using the wrong word for so long!

Correction, joik is defined as non-verbal chant, if you use any sami words at all then it's not joik, it becomes sami inspired music. Yes, the sami community have defined the different types of music, for instance if a vocalist sings in English, even if he is Sami, then it's called western music, if he joiks then it's a joik and if he sings with sami words then it's sami inspired music. For instance, in the "spirit in the sky" song he is performing sami inspired music, he is not joiking, a joik is voice only, no background music and no instruments(he used drums on stage).
