What is Joist Tape? Do I need it?

I am buying 4 rubber mats(two are 3'x8' and two are 4'x10') to cover most of it. My 33 yr old deck, was splintering all over. I put down a rubber welcome mat and I picked it up 2 years later and wood under the mat looked like new the splintering was gone. I have 1 rubber mat its all rubber, I ordered 3 more today rubber on bottom brown carpet on top. I might flip them over in winter and snow might slide off.

I saw another video saying that joist tape isnt recommended if you are using PVC boards. Basically the pvc has problems sitting on the tape. Any knowledge of this?

Just paint the wood with 2 coats of bitumen primer, jobe done and will last years

When did we move away from glueing tops of the Joists to adhere the Deck Sheets to the joists? With a layer of Tape it makes the glueing useless.......

Not sure exactly what you're referring to. Gluing to my knowledge has only ever really been done in a couple scenarios. Gluing down sheet plywood for a membrane install - in which case that would still be the case and there would be no need for tape. The second was improper installation of decking by using construction adhesive and brad nails to install decking. This was never a proper way to install decking and should never be done. You could make an argument to install wood decking that way with proper stainless nails, but not a good idea with composites.

What a bunch of BS! Joist tape is just a scam for stupid people. I always use pressure treated lumber. I've torn apart decks that were 40+yrs old, and the PT lumber was still good as new. Do you use just standard lumber?

I would agree with that statement for original formula pressure treated lumber, but the stuff they make now is garbage. I have built decks 30 years ago with original pressure treated lumber that still are solid as the day I built them. I have also built decks with the new pressure treated lumber that I constantly have to repair rot.

I do agree with you that back in the day, PT lumber stood the test of time. The PT lumber (Home Depot/Lowes) of today will rot within five years. That is my experience.

Didnt the usa stop using cca treatment in the early 2000's, this probably explains why the outside framing timber needs extra protection.Other places in the world this tape is not required as CCA treatment is much tougher.

It is not self sealing, so it will rot the just same , the tape holds the moisture in, but on that note no one knows the result advance 10 yrs to see

Is it necessary to use construction adhesive on PVC Azek fascia? I think it’s recommended for pvc but not (that I’m aware of) for composite fascia. Also should the miters at corners be tight or are but joints preferable (and if so should butt joints be tight?)

Also, I found that butyl tape gets really hot in the sun. We were applying on joists in about 95 degree weather and just burning our hands like crazy. Will that heat make my redwood deck boards way hotter in the summer? Is there a better tape?

That was an awful review. I expect more technical talk from you two. I'm skeptical and nothing you said helped. For example, 90% of the joist is still exposed except for the top edge. The top edge gets the tape, but it's still riddled with holes from fasteners. Does the tape self-seal around a screw/nail? Does the adhesion of the tape last 20 years? Really? Tape that doesn't unstick "forever"? 104 degrees, -15 degrees, snow/ice, mildew, etc. Awful review. Any pro trying to get the scoop got nothing here. Please try again, you guys are usually better. Thanks.

Is joist tape necessary for a deck build in the hot desert? It rains, and when it does, it monsoons. But very infrequently.

@@jimmyjoe1591 I ended up doing it. But it's a big deck so it just took forever. But not really that cheap - I spent $500 alone on a crap ton of butyl tape.

It doesn't work..think about it genus... the screws penetrate the waterproof membrane no matter what your screw holes let water in on top of the joists......keep trying junior..........I've been building since I could shit in diapers..........more common sense is needed
