Hi Stephen, this was a brilliant explanation and helped clear some things up in my mind about Kabbala. Unfortunately I've been interacting with a number of believers lately who have been influenced by a claim that Paul and thus Christianity as a whole had esoteric, Jewish mystic roots. The passages they were using to justify their positions were from 2 Corinthians and Ezekiel's vision of the glory of YHWH.

Kabbalah is not sorcery, at least it is not in its own terms (you may call it as you wish). The mystical practices of Kabbala look in to the very nature of god, and they do it carefully in order to avoid idolatry (consider that the Rabbis are all about the law, they wouldn't violate it). Cristianity in general also has mystical practices and it is not wrong. The practice of kabbalah is not forbidden by scripture, but by your own doctrines. A kabbalist would tell you that Kabbalah reveals the mystical meaning of scripture. Now, it is very true that the theology of the Zohar differs from the christian. But christians and jews alike are very good negotiating with the text for their own purporses.

Hey, good job. And thanks for taking a loving stance with the intro! Not to give any credence to Kabbalah, but it’s important to remember that prophets and disciples were all characterized as magicians by magicians. Take how Daniel was considered, for example. Not that a Christian would ever wear the label, though, as it comes with tons of unwanted baggage. Yet, I wouldn’t want Christians to shy away from being truly born again, which falls under the category of ascetic teachings or sanctification, nor shy away from seeing the system used in scripture at large that makes it all fit together, even if it parallels non-kosher systems. There are no islands here.
