Good catch, two things come to mind 1) he’s not guilty of what he’s accused of, he’s guilty of some other stuff. Again, I think it’s very clear he acted in inappropriate ways, he knows he did some stuff that’s not right. So the caveat can be an acknowledgment of that. He’s acknowledged in many places that he acted in ways he no longer would or that he now understands were inappropriate so I would imagine he doesn’t feel entirely absolved of all guilt. 2) the obvious thing would be to name the charges “I was found not guilty of SA, SH, R …..” but I know, more than anyone, how aware people who make videos are of the words we’re not supposed to use. And given the platforms he’s been on recently I’m sure he was told to not say certain words. So the distancing language can be exactly that. Distancing haha Thanks for watching and pointing out a great verbal catch 😊

@@TheBehavioralArts I wouldn't see this as too much of a thing, because honestly who isn't guilty of something? That's what I would hear from a statement of that "What i was accused of", that's what he's on "trial" for whether in court or public opinion. There's likely a billion other things in his life that people could scrutinize him for or anyone for that matter. If he were to come out and just be like "I'm not guilty of anything." then that opens up to this clip being played the moment the next scandal comes out. "But you said this", it's quite clear his goal is to build back up his reputation and I presume to try and get back into acting on somewhat close to a scale as he once was. Which comes with needing to not only do these interview to address the present and past Kevin but also to address the future Kevin.

@@Littlehoof if he said that though, it might sound like he did the stuff, was accused of doing it, but somehow found not guilty through his own or others’ machinations. It raises unnecessary questions, so that’s not what he wants to say. He’s trying to say he was found not guilty of the particular things he was “accused of” and to state or imply that he didn’t actually DO those things. As others including Spidey mentioned, specifying the accusations could cause issues with the video being able to be played on YT or elsewhere. It’s pretty clear that he’s no angel, so a categorical denial (eg, “I’m innocent!” Or “I didn’t do anything wrong”) would just invite further scrutiny and criticism, in addition to being something he wouldn’t be able to say 100% truthfully. I hear someone who is very carefully choosing his words.

Very unbiased analysis as always. As for Kevin Spacey, my professional opinion is that whatever he did was morally wrong, but not criminally punishable And that's enough for me. I always say "we don't judge people, we judge actions". My lived experience tells me that he was punished far beyond his moral lacking demanded. He was vilified much more than people that do deserve to be vilified haven't been. And in the face of such injustice he decided to look within and try to be a bettee person for the future. He's not pointing fingers, because he knows he has no power over what others say or do, so he's working on what he has power on, which is himself. Very stoic of him, and i commend him for it. The majority of people chastising him and commenting on how bad and guilty he is will never have half the courage to look inside themselves and improve their behavior. And i say this as a person that isnt even a fan of the man, only movie of his i rememeber watching was the usual suspects, and he was the bad guy...

I believe the case he’s referring to was in the UK. Also, I believe they counter sued for damages by proving the claims were untrue, not just finding reasonable doubt. That’s why he was awarded $40k back. So in that sense, he actually did get found “innocent”.

There could be another explanation for why Kevin adjusts his tie, looks at someone to his left, and picks lint off his sleeve while the clip is playing of Scott, the Marine, telling his Private Ryan story: Kevin probably thought he wasn’t on camera. I’ve been in TV studios myself - it’s quite common for makeup to be touched up, clip-on mics or clothing to be adjusted during video playbacks. Kevin has probably seen this scene and just about every other one from this sensationalist slander show repeatedly. So it might have been equally boring and stressful for him to have to wait for this scene to finish before he can respond to it.

Well, first Kevin Spacey is a good actor in my opinion, I saw certainly a few pictures of his, but he never caught my eye, like others, like say, Johnny Depp.... I mention this to say that I don't know much to nothing about him, or about the accusations, sure, heard about it at the sidelines, but never invested time into more detail. Second, I consider myself having a good intuition, a good gut feeling and I can read people within seconds. This as a ''baseline'' to stay in the lingo, I watched your analysis and another one beforehand, that's all! Based on these two tidbits I saw from this interview with Pierce Morgan, I could say that he's truly remorseful, he truly vows betterment, and he really feels bad NOT for himself, but for the people involved! I believe that he's more shocked about the reactions towards his behavior than we could fathom. He's a good-natured man, he might have struggled with his ego and arrogant bouts, but nothing with malice, or calculating, or even plain out mean. No, he didn't see any bad in all what he did and he shouldn't have done. He wants to work again, and not for money, or fame, but just because it's his job, and he enjoys it. Being so totally cut off from every single opportunity must have been devastating for him, not mentioning the financial aftermath. I think Kevin Spacey is sincere in this interview, he doesn't want to deceive, he isn't calculated or weighting out his chances. Wishing him the best, and that now he will return to filming and give us some more awesome movies!

Thank you for your analysis and insight! I agree with you: I think he's paid enough of a price for his actions (losing his career, reputation, his finances). From what I've heard, I think he hasn't been really aware of how his actions have hurt others. He's been maybe naive or tone deaf that his groping and assaultive behaviors weren't just "caressing" or "falling in love" with someone. I believe that he wants to be a better person, and I think he should be given that chance. Another point I'll just make is he is a gay man in his 60s. Being gay is a lot more acceptable now, but back in the '60s and '70s when he was growing up, things were very rough for a gay person. Most of them grew up thinking they were wrong and bad and being ashamed of their true essence. Maybe the emotions/confusion associated with being gay in that era is what led him to lack awareness about his actions as a gay man who has all this power and prestige as a renowned actor. Just a thought and my personal opinion. But I feel like he has awareness of his wrongdoings and should be given another chance. He is a phenomenal actor, he is eloquent, and I feel he has a good heart! But I always, always appreciate what a compassionate person you are, Spidey. Wow, I really respect your response and can relate to it... when you said that you were angry with both him and his accusers because you had thought the world of him as both a person and an actor... that's how I felt at first with Bill Cosby and Johnny Depp (as well as Kevin Spacey)... With Bill Cosby, I believe (through the facts and evidence) that he 'did the thing(s)' and is guilty and I'm left with profound disappointment and disgust. With Johnny Depp, I watched the entire trial, saw and heard all the evidence and am overwhelmingly convinced that he has serious drug and alcohol issues that he is or has been dealing with, but despite that, he is a very good human being and did not do any of the things that he was accused of... and on the flip side of that, Amber Heard was clearly the abuser... So far as Kevin Spacey goes, the fact that he's willing to air all of the dirty laundry by taking legal action (and winning), I think he's being genuine and truthful. But unlike JD, I think he does have an arrogant past and many more personal faults and I do think that all that has happened has caused him to sincerely reflect upon himself and try to make positive changes... I think time will tell, but I'm with you in giving him the benefit of the doubt for now and, as you said, "respect gained but not fully restored". Note: I take the part about being angry with the accusers as not whether or not they are telling the truth (because in Bill Cosby's case, they were telling the truth), it's an anger more at the situation in that it shatters your perspective and makes you angry at having to contemplate whether or not you've been duped by this person you've looked up to... it's like the old saying, "don't shoot the messenger"... not sure if that explains it very well (or even makes sense)... or you may have an entirely different meaning than that.

He did a death scene in one movie many years ago in which he died with his eyes open and you could see the light and life leave his body just through his eyes, it was incredible... Knowing what an amazing actor he is makes it hard to watch him being interviewed without wondering "is he acting"... but that being said, I don't think he's acting, I think he's genuinely remorseful, that he's self-reflecting and trying to become a better person... but time will tell if he accomplishes that. I find the way he handled the questions about King Charles and his costar from House of Cards really interesting. He really didn't lean into Charles' support and he refused to use her lack of contact to present himself as a victim. But, at the same time, he used that one word, 'directly', along with that little smile, to casually indicate that there was indeed support from the king in some manner. And, in the same way, he stressed the month and the year his costar contacted him for the last time, while at the same time not letting the host badmouth her. So, he managed to stay humble AND get his message across. I'm not saying I blame him... I'm not saying I don't... It's just a very diplomatic way of getting his message across.

I wonder if the “directly” could also be to couch it if someone comes later and says they know so-and-so talked to him on behalf of King Charles. This way he’s being honest and there’s no “gotcha” moment. And I suspect knowing the date he last had contact with his costar could coincide when he left the show or these allegations took off. I don’t know for sure, but these would be plausible explanations as to why these two things occurred as they did.

Just a very pedantic correction, that in our courts we don't pronounce people innocent. We pronounce people guilty or not guilty, since we deem them having not met a burden of proof required for criminal guilt. The difference being evident in cases such as OJ where he was found guilty in a civil trial for the same crime, but where the burden of proof is lower in civil cases, since it won't face criminal sentencing, but civil which is monetary. A judgement of innocence would have different entailment, since then we are saying "he has not done this", rather than "the burden of proof has not been met to find guilt". We still use a presumption of innocence, but we don't declare innocence if that makes sense.

Thank you! I thought the Spidey’s point of “he was found innocent in court” somewhat weak and hypocritical, especially after his video on OJ. The outcome of a court case does not indicate whether someone is truly guilty or not - it only means that particular court case could not prove guilt or the jury/judge did not have enough evidence to legally find someone guilty. In Spacey Unmasked, there was even a mention of certain evidence not being heard in court. Court cases can have many pieces of evidence blocked or thrown out. Spacey relies heavily on pointing out his court case findings (“I am not guilty”) instead of denying the incidents happened, which makes sense for him. But Spidey? I’m surprised he gave as much credence to it as he did in this video. Still love this channel and Spidey though.

So the issue in his mind is that people want him to be punished for what he is doing rather than that he did inappropriate things?

@@Sarah-with-an-H Great point! I think to the number 2 point, I agree, in general. In this specific case I didn't read it as Spacey victim blaming around the people's frailties. He largely spoke about their difficulties because they were contextually relevant...for example, he was making the point that the person with cancer died of cancer (not being killed by someone), that one of the accusers was actually stalker (and gave examples to show that to be true). The one where I didn't agree was with the example of the Marine. It's not uncommon for abuses of power to really mess with decisions someone makes around contact with the perpetrator. Richard Gadd is a great example of that, with the Darrien character. It's really not a straightforward relationship. Just because he was emailing Spacey trying to get work or happening to meet up with him socially, doesn't exonerate Spacey. However, I find Spacey to be completely credible in this situation. The Marine had the incident VERY closely tied to that specific movie, so its unlikely he got the wrong movie. He was describing how the worst scenes of battle juxtaposed with what he said Spacey was doing at that moment. The body language when Piers asked if he'd ever seen Saving Private Ryan was grounded, still, no additional word based qualifiers or movements in his face or body, just a sure and certain "No". We saw the same with Fiona Harvey when Piers asked if she'd ever been convicted of anything.

The first thing I noticed was that he says "I'm not guilty of what I was accused of." Not only is "not guilty" a legal term rather than saying whether or not he did it (guilt or innocence in court is sometimes quite different than actually committing wrongdoing) he says "of what I was accused of." He doesn't go into any specifics. He doesn't say what he was accused of. It sounds like distancing. If he didn't do anything wrong, I would expect him, not necessarily in explicit terms, but be somewhat specific about what he was accused of and why it didn't happen. Or maybe his lawyers have told him what to say. But if he didn't do anything wrong, there shouldn't be a problem being somewhat frank about it, right?

@@NinStardust It seems like it. I can't tell 100% though. I'm not just going to throw him under the bus because he's a Hollywood guy. Yes, he has an accuser who was VERY underage when he made a pass at him, which is pretty horrible (I don't care about the gender dynamic), but until I see hard evidence that he physically assaulted someone, those things are certainly bad, but I'm not ready to call him a total piece of garbage. He's gay, and is into guys. Fine. As long as he's not forcing himself on kids, I don't care. If he made a pass at a kid, I'm not throwing him in prison and throwing away the key, but I've got my eye on him. I'm not 100% sure on the specifics of the situation with the 15 year old. If he actually touched the kid, that's a big no-no and chuck him in jail with the rest of the turds. That's unacceptable. Usually in these cases, you don't need to see ID to know someone is underage. If I saw some girls at a party, I could probably guess within a few years what their ages were and at the very least, whether they were adults or not. Or at least, I'd probably know whether or not to be suspicious. It's weird. I hate that R. Kelly sold a bunch of records via download the day he went to prison and Michael Jackson was never found guilty (though I go either way on that) and his career was basically over as a recording artist after the first trial. So I guess society has decided if you assault an underage girl, that's "understandable," but the fact that someone's going after a boy and they're the same gender, that's suddenly a problem. I knew plenty of girls in grade 9 who would have loved to have been chatted up by their PE teacher. I heard them gushing about him. It still doesn't make it right or legal.

I look back at accusations of Placido Domingo, and see parallels with Spacey. I remember Domingo from the seventies. From close up. That he was a womanizer? Yes. Well known. And very good at it. One time I passed him in a backstage hall, and moved towards the wall, teasing something like "I've heard about you, stay on your side!" and he laughed, no rancor, just teased. When a singer accused him and claimed she had no idea what he was like - I know even ushers at tour sites like Atlanta knew about his reputation. It was open. He both pursued and and was pursued. He didn't have to force anyone. I hate his career was destroyed. Spacey had more stories told about him that I heard among actor friends. But I also knew how jealous actors could be about actors like Spacey, Cruise, and others. Spacey has never been a saint, neither was Domingo. I don't know what really happened in either life, except I did meet Domingo along the way. But when Spacey talked of this making him rethink his life, I know what that's like. Just as I remember what it was like to be around very famous people. The pursuit was always there, between the stars and the fans. Sometimes the dark side of it would reach criminal behavior, most times, not. Thank you for doing this video.

But if I was being interviewed and had some hesitancy on my pronunciation being correct (perfect even), and if I felt I was being scrutinised in any way already - I'd find another way to address her. He's probably got some perfectionism or control issues, and pronunciation will be affected by that.
