Sometimes, people from the Socialist Youth League, an organization that North Korean teenagers have to join between the ages of 13 and 15, travel the streets to look for violators of established dress code rules. For awhile, back when DVD's were a thing, a common tactic of the North Korean police was to cut off the power to an apartment building, and then raid every apartment. If you had any Western movies or shows in your DVD player, off to prison you went. (Also, a lot of North Koreans aren't allowed in the military. At one point, 25% of young Korean men were considered unfit for military service because of maltrition-related disabilities. And if you're one of the lower classes--if you are, or your ancesters were, thought to be Japanese collaborators, or rivals of King Sung Il for power before the takeover, or tried to flee the country, or were Christian, then you're not trusted to be in the military.)

I have to be honest, I find it fascinating how this land can even exist and work :o There is so much that just screams that it has to crumble every second, but it still goes on. It is like this "little universe" always just walks on this thin line of slipping and then just gets brought back the moment it looks like it goes one way. But, as in the end mentioned, I can´t believe this will hold on for even longer - but who knows, it is North Korea we are talking about.
