Hello Lithuania Explained KZbin community! Some people have reported that some information is out of date; Yes - I try to make it clear that some information is from 2022, and some is from 2020; but it was a challenge to find official sources that are up-to-date. I also tried to explain that this was not a full, comprehensive picture of everything in Lithuania's military, and only the main pieces of equipment. But please comment here if you have more accurate information, or information you think should be included (and let me know where you found it, so I can check next time!). Here is some updated information: > There is also the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union, which has approximately 14,000 members. > 4 Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters have been ordered but not yet delivered > 8 HIMARS units will come, starting in 2025. > The Baltic Air Policing mission includes fighter jets from allied countries based in Šiauliai. At the time of writing, the Belgian Air Force contributes four F-16 Fighting Falcons and the French have sent four Mirage2000s. Rotations are every few months, so this will change soon. *Also, it seems like a few of the people complaining about inaccurate information are counting equipment that has been ordered and not delivered. So that’s not totally fair…

Latvia here. Despite the Baltics cooperating fairly well on lots of levels I think we could benefit from joined coordinated purchases. This could lead to price drops for more expensive vital systems and the reduction and unification of repairs and maintenece. As you might know about the Suvalki gap threat, then unified weapon platforms and united training exercises could lead to more efficient and effective joined operations against the threat.

While some numbers are not very accurate, overall a good video. It's worth noting that at least in terms of actual equipment Lithuania has some of the most advanced and latest weapon systems including but not limited to NASAMS 3, PzH2000, Boxer IFV, JLTV, Javelin ATGM, future Caesar Mk2 and others. It's a collection of top of the range weapons in most categories and that's something Lithuanian military and its leaders can be proud of. Also, it's true that our military is still quite small, but it's growing and even at current size it's comparable to... Sweden (yes, Sweden!) in terms of active duty personnel numbers (~23000-24000).

It's safer to place smaller bets on more numbers" Also Lithuanian army uses "Quick response Defence" strategy. That's why we don't have Heavy armoured vehicles right now. @@AlexP-mi2bc A valid point, but the main reason why the Soviets were able to produce the "quantity" of tanks, airplanes, and vehicles was because of the American Lend Lease. The "quality" of the Soviet Army was degraded by the incompetence of Stalin and his war cabinet. Similar to how the war in Ukraine has grinded the Russian army down due to its poor quality and incompentance, but this time there is no Lend Lease to keep up the quantity. Unless China steps in and supplies the parts and materials for the Russian tanks, aircraft, and vehicles.

@@juanf5391 I would have to disagree with your assessment: Soviet leadership in WW2 were inefficient but by no means can you call them incompetent. Incompetent leaders do not win wars. That's why it emerged victorious over many European adversaries over the centuries.

How is an airfield absolutely essential if we just see in Ukraine that it isn’t? Lithuania is so small there’s barely a place you couldn’t cover with HIMARS long range rockets after a short drive. Lithuanian needs the forces that make sense in the concert of NATO. And the Lithuanian airspace would be well covered by the Airforces of other member countries. Lithuania on the other hand needs to hold it’s ground or delay Russia and that can only be done with ground troops. Hence infantry, IFVs and tanks. Lithuania knows what it’s buying.

@herptek the Gripen was suggested as this aircraft is the most suitable for dispersed operations. Having advanced jet fighters popping up in unexpected locations would have a large disruptive effect on Russian aircraft and helicopter operations, especially airborne assaults and the planning for those operations and may suffice to deter those operations. The Gripen would clearly best integrate with Sweden's air defence network and provide more defence in depth and aircraft deployment options. I agree an integrated ground based air defence network would be highly beneficial. Finland showed in WW2 the major benefits of even a very small airforce.

Who is going to license the production of said equipment? Who is going to fund the RnD of creating new equipment that can be produced? etc. we are talking about years and billions of Euros spent. Id say provided that we are investing in RnD projects, e.g. the "Vilkas" mechanized vehicless are custom made. Lithuania is doing well for its size and capabilities as far as professional military is concerned. However, against a real threat from certain neighbors (and you know what I'm talking about), it won't be able to stand out for more than a week on its own. Lithuania is severely lacking in trained and prepared reserve personnel. So unless tens/hundreds of thousands of other allied armed forces are deployed in Lithuania, its 11 thousand strong military + a few Polish, US, German battalions won't be any good against a 50k or a 100k invading force. Terrainwise, Lithuania is pretty flat but has a lot of forests and rivers which make a good cover, and/or obstacle on the way of invading enemy columns. Ethnic Russians make up only 5% of Lithuania's population which is quite favorable compared with Latvia and Estonia.

@@joinz8544 Fair enough. The issue at hand is they'll have to defend against 2 axes of attack: Kaliningrad oblast and Belarus. Vilnius is only 30km away from the border. The question at hand is how long will Lithuania and all locally deployed NATO troops be able to defend against a larger Russian force? And will the Lithuanian armed forces command structure break down should Vilnius fall? Moreover, should an invasion happen, I doubt Russia will attack Lithuania alone. The weak links are Latvia and Estonia with massive ethnic Russian fifth columns.

IFV, APC, SPA and so on. Even on individual kit level it is so different. I guess we both use FN MAG to some capacity.

@@LithuaniaExplainedyour source is really pin point, but Himars are in Lithuania already, talking about the boxers. There were much of a talk, that there will be 209 in total, there weren't much info about "when" it will be in Lithuania, but it's in progress and the money is already spent so I think you can count 209 in total, we don't exactly know how many of them are already in Lithuania with my source of intel. Talking about self propelled howitzer "Caesar" 18 of them are on order, but they had they're own problems with chassis, the 155mm were to heavy for the car, so now, we are waiting for update and a bigger better upgrade for those howitzers 😅😮 Can we fight bigger countries like Russia, my answer is no, but not a hard "no" the military equipment, the quality of it, the mindset after serving for those 9months and still being called every 5 years to recall that info over and over again is really great idea! But don't forget that russia has more tanks, artillery etc and it can just non stop, bomb our little playground.. Intelligence, every soldier readiness physically, mentally is much much better and really modern if you can say that, I really start wondering after all those months of were all of this will take us?! after 5-10 more years we will have to much of equipment and not enough specialist for every batallion 😂

Once saturation is achieved they are sitting ducks untill they can replenish their armament.

That's why all of NATO alliance is rather questionable to say the least.

What looks to be most deficient is towed artillery, rocket artillery, anti-tank and anti-personnel mine capacity, surface to air missile capacity, electronic warfare capacity, more anti-tank missiles, surveillance and attack drone production capacity and a tracked IFV. The Baltic States need to ensure they have the capacity in equipment, trained personnel and materials to quickly build something like the 'Surovikin Line' wherever needed. Compulsory national military service must also be universal and a large reserve force capacity built up as per Finland or Switzerland. The combined population of the Baltic States is more than Finland's and it should be possible for a few squadrons of modern jet fighters like the Gripen E to be acquired by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania if Sweden and NATO can part finance the acquisition and an advanced pilot training squadron is provided by Sweden. The Baltic States should also invest in the joint manufacture of all calibres of ammunition and they should be able to be an internationally competitive exporter.

The Baltic states are not very good an area to base aircraft on during wartime, because everything is in range of multiple types of threats from Russia. Your allied air forces operating in your turf during wartime would prefer to use bases outside of the area rather than in the Baltic states themselves. It would not be as easy flying there either during wartime than peace. The Baltic states would do well to build a common integrated, ground based, multi layered air defence system instead. The battlespace in the Baltic states is kind of cramped anyway and not very huge areas would need to be covered by ranges of ground based systems and so not very huge amounts of SAM battations would be necessary to deny the Russians safe use of your airspace. It seems to me that this would be the optimal solution for your turf and more cost effective one also. The Baltic states are not Finland and I don't think they need to aproach this air defence question in the same way as Finland traditionally has.

Lithuania military have drones and concluded new contracts for purchases, but... The problem with drones is that they evolves very fast because of war in Ukraine. In my opinion military should by drones in smaller amounts for military to train and have plan how to acquire huge amounts of drones if day X begins to approach. For this matter only Lithuanian drones producers are valid. By the way Lithuanian producers have shown very good results with their products in Ukraine. Lithuanian producers are aimed to Ukrainian needs and speed of production so sometimes they are using Chinese parts in their products. And that is STOP sign for Lithuanian military. But in case of Day X that becomes irrelevant
@AlexP-mi2bc

Drones are definitely helpful. But I think what your govt needs to realize is without trained reserves, no matter how many drones you have, you'll get overwhelmed quickly. A 20 thousand strong Lithuanian army (plus a few Polish, US and other allied battalions) won't be a match for a 100k invasion force given you have to defend from two sides.
@herptek
@herptek 2 ай бұрын
The problem with the military grade UAV:s and UCAV:s is that they have a hard time working in a defended airspace. Ukraine has the geographical advantage of having depth in their operational space and much more space to retreat and house rear assets. Even without deploying much of their air defense assets forward anymore than they are during peace time, Russia already covers the airspace of Lithuania with their SAM batteries. Anything that is not stealthy or capable of evading fire can be shot down if it is considered by the enemy worth shooting down. I would guess cheap and expendable drones are the way forward, the kinds of which drain up the enemy air defense if it is used to shoot down drones instead of more expensive targets continuously. Speaking of air defense, it might actually be worth it looking into the Baltic states building a common integrated air defense system. It may be impossible to fly there during wartime with impunity, but you can make it impossible for the enemy as well. That would also greatly help friendly air forces in the battle for air superiority.
