Gisela Terwindt, MD, PhD, Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands, explains that medication overuse headache (MOH) is a problem that affects 1-2% of the population. MOH is the most common secondary headache disorder, often co-occuring with migraines or tension-type headaches, particularly in cases of chronification. For triptans and other acute medications, 10 days or more of use in a month is classed as overuse and can result in MOH. For normal painkillers, this number is increased to 15 days. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
