A couple of points. MPLS is the new frame relay, in that it provides virtual circuits between points. Also a T1, often called DS1, is frequently emulated these days. I have put them over Ethernet over short haul microwave. Further, the multimedia benefit is becoming less important as the world moves to Ethernet over copper, fibre or radio. With the trend to move even residential customers to fibre, even xDSL is becoming less common. BTW, I've been around long enough to remember when my employer retired their last revenue Morse wire. I've seen a lot of changes in that time. One of them was ATM, which was supposed to do a lot of what MPLS does. However, it never really took off beyond the phone companies.

Thank you CBT Nuggets . Question, though. Does this mean that - since things are labeled before transit, thereby negating the need for inspection; one could feasibly spoof or obfuscate that label and be transmitting something entirely different?
@PaulMorgan19 жыл бұрын
Antonio Candito The step where the packets are labeled would be internal to the ISP's network (assuming proper design of course). The idea with an MPLS backbone is that it's totally transparent from the customer perspective. You put packets in one side and the same packets magically pop out the wire on the other end. So sure you could spoof an MPLS tag, but the MPLS backbone will forward that packet just like it would any other (tag it and forward it along through the backbone).
