This must be why Host Defense is literally the only brand of lions mane i could actually feel as not just a placebo but it caused vivid dreams and within weeks i could sit down and memorize a song at the keyboard in about half the time.

First night I started Lion's Mane from Host Defense... Wow!!! I had vivid dreams like crazy!!! Caught me by surprise!!!!! They really activated somethin' !!!!!!! I noticed I have more patience when working on complex projects... I quit drinking about 3 months ago and my anxiety has been through the dang roof.... but am balancing out week by week. Seen "Avatar"/ I think this is what Sigourney Weaver was talking about when she was talking about the trees. How it all inter connects like connections in the brain. What is the ratio of mycelium to brown rice substrate in your products? It says on your own website that it is a very expensive and difficult process to separate the two. Does this mean that >90% of host defense powders are actually just rice starch? Is the polysaccharide count stated on the packaging mostly starch? I would love to be corrected as I was initially introduced to medicinal mushrooms via Paul Stamets and it would be such a shame if this company was among the many others that defraud and deceive its customers.

Thanks for checking in on this subject! We appreciate your interest and would like to respond to your inquiry. Our response is that no -- Host Defense harvests during the peak stage of growth to capture an abundant constituent profile and a large portion of the rice has been biotransformed. For mushroom mycelium of most species, this means that we harvest just as young mushroom fruitbodies, or primordia, are beginning to form. Our experienced cultivation team carefully monitors our mushroom crops to ensure harvest at the optimal time for peak vitality. Not only is there a higher mycelial biomass than you might expect, the fermented rice substrate is a lot more than just simple rice starch. Mycelium penetrates the rice grains and biologically transforms the rice by secreting acids and enzymes to break down the simple starch into various highly-nutritive compounds -- extracellular metabolites like arabinoxylans, polysaccharides, and prebiotics. These represent some of the hundreds of unique active compounds that have been identified within the mushroom lifecycle in peer reviewed science. We believe that all the nutrients and myriad compounds within the whole mushroom are necessary for a whole foods approach to health, which is why we include the entire complex in our supplements. Recent research demonstrated that the mycelium robustly engages immune cell activity, and that the fermented rice strongly engages the modulation of the immune response--which is quite different from the effects of the mycelium. These are different and complimentary actions that give our products their combined effects. The very nature of a mycelium-plus-fermented-rice product makes it impossible by currently available testing methods to identify how much of that polysaccharide count is mycelium polysaccharide and how much is fermented rice polysaccharide. Tests for fruitbody products are not effective on a mixed substance like ours. However we believe it is not the polysaccharide content that determines efficacy, but rather a large range of compounds that synergistically work together.
