I’ve been studying music therapy at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California for the past 2 years. It has been one of the best decisions of my life to study music therapy and I can’t wait keep to advocating this amazing major. Hope you enjoyed watching my first Q&A and that it helped you understand more of what music therapy is. :) thanks for watching.

This video was SO so helpful. The big bad rona has made thinking about college as a high school senior so stressful but seeing this video has really made me feel confident in trying to go into music therapy as a major. I’m mainly a choir student and I’ve dabbled in piano and have been seriously playing ukulele for 3 months and guitar for about 1. Keep making great content for all of us music lovers out there :))

I’m 38 years old and took some piano lessons when I was younger but do not play any instrument with mastery. However, I took the bold decision to combine cognitive psychology with music. I want to apply electronic music to therapies and hopefully in a future apply medicine and music as a healthcare provider. I dont regret my decision. :)

Omg I've always loved music AND psychology. I wanted to learn psychology as a major because it's the closest I can get to my passions, while earning money to pay for my music hobby. NOW I CAN DO THEM BOTH TOGETHER???? absolutely no way I'm going crazy

It’s so interesting that you just started leading sessions this year! I’m currently a junior music therapy and music education double major and my school has different practicum placements every semester starting in your sophomore year. We observe an older student music therapist during the spring semester of freshman year, and then we get to do it ourselves! So far I’ve worked with older adults in two different settings, preschoolers, and a medically fragile toddler!

I am so happy I found your channel! I just completed my sophomore year but am switching my major to music therapy. My previous uni didn’t offer it so I am in the process of transferring as well. I’m super excited but nervous since it’s all so new to me. Seeing content like this reassures me that I made the right decision:) I’m excited to see what else you do in the future!

Breezing Beyond not a problem! My previous major was Musical Theatre; it thankfully gave me a lot of voice/theory/piano training.

Love this video! I'm curious, how has your relationship with music therapy and becoming a music therapist changed affected your relationship with God?

Thank you! I think as I am becoming closer to being an actual music therapist (board certified) and in this current stage that I am at as a music therapy intern, I have learned that I can’t rely on my own strengths. I’m only as good of a therapist as I am when I am close to God. The process of learning to be a helper & therapist has been amazing but also has its many challenges, mentally & physically. It has definitely taught me to be more reliant on God and trusting in Him everyday that He will use me to serve others & Him :)

hey! thank you so much for this video I’ve recently discovered this field and have fallen in love with it. I am currently a ballet dancer and am doing a biology major. My question is I’ve always loved music and psychology but have never played any instrument. Is it a requirement to play an instrument in order to go into studying this or are u taught guitar/ piano etcc??
@BreezingBeyond
@BreezingBeyond 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! For my school, we all are required to have a primary instrument that we play and get one-on-one lessons for during our time at college. However, I am not sure about other colleges. As music therapy major, the three instruments we need to be proficient in is guitar, piano and voice. If you are not comfortable with any of those, there are classes often offered at school to help improve your skill. So essentially, you are taught at school but it is helpful to know how to play instruments before going in.

I am currently working on a Bachelor's Degree in Music but I'm considering this as a career . Do I need to double major in Psychology?
@BreezingBeyond
@BreezingBeyond Жыл бұрын
You don't necessarily need to double major or minor in psychology. If you continue with the masters of music therapy route, your curriculum will most likely cover topics on psychology. The two fields (music therapy & psychology) do have some overlap which is why I personally chose to minor is psychology. Hope this helps!

Hi! Yes, I have a few friends whose primary instrument is violin and sometimes they use it during session! As music therapists, the main ones we use are guitar, piano and voice but clients and patients love all types of instruments :)

I love your videos! I’m going into Music Therapy and I’m concerned about the Music Theory courses. Is that something a lot of students tend to struggle with? I’m trying to find the best program for me so I can pass these types of classes and get tutored if need be.

Thank you! I can’t speak for all colleges music therapy courses but I can speak for my experience.My professors are great at teaching and giving us enough time to do assignments. I have loved all my music therapy courses so far and currently I am taking music therapy in mental health and it is so fun to learn about how it is used in the mental health settings. :)
