Should You Go Into Music? How I decided to Pursue Music

I think there's a lot of gatekeeping in classical music performance. People judge very harshly any performance that isn't perfect, but they forget that the point of music is entertain and express one's emotions, not to have perfect intonation and be robotic. The conductor for the Boston Phil has a series of masterclasses and he makes it very clear that the degree of perfection in your playing is irrelevant and what is really important is that you enjoy what you're doing and you convey that through your playing. And every one of these masterclasses there is a huge difference in the initial performance and the final one, not that the technique has improved, but he gets the musician to stop worrying about being perfect and let their emotions guide the music. A lot of the prodigies you see win the competitions are never really heard from again, and I think that is proof enough that passion and expression matter more than technical perfection. Of course, the super famous musicians do play perfectly, but they also have a very distinct soul and passion to their performances which is what I think made them truly famous.

This is so true, and a lot of what I'm learning here at school: how to sound more like an artist/musician than a student that's just focused on technique and impossible perfection. Technique is important of course, but it should not be at the cost of artistry and expression. You bring up some really great points; thank you for that!

In the beginning of this year I was told by a few people I’m not at college level, so I started practicing my butt off. Practicing 2-4 hours a day, learning scales, etudes, learning concertos, double stops, chords, and getting an instructor. I learned how to do vibrato on my own in a few weeks and now I can play college level music. All you need is determination.

@@jhnozx I started piano at 15 (I’m 17 now), and I often have worries and regrets about starting “later” than most musicians. However, 15 is still young and there are musicians who have started even later that became successful. For example, Jimi Hendrix started playing guitar when he was 15, and he’s considered one of the greatest guitarists to ever walk this Earth. Also, I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Bill Withers, but he didn’t even pick up an instrument until he was in his early 30s. He has 9 grammy nominations, and he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. So what I’m trying to say is, there’s still hope. Wishing you success and fulfillment as a musician, and if you’re passionate about it, then keep at it ✌️

Me and my twin were prodigies in music. Especially violin, viola, and cello. Within a year of playing each we both were in advanced orchestra and getting paid to perform in this orchestra. I got a full ride scholarship to Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. I didn't take it because I didn't see the point of having a degree in music when I already knew just about anything. I played in sound tracks like Obi Wan, Frozen, And Iron man 3. Degrees are not for everyone and I am living proof of that. Proud of you though that you are pursuing it. I teach violin now things have slowed down since covid. I love what I do even if I didn't get paid very well for it, I'd still choose this career forever.

This genuinely helped me so much. I'm a junior in high school, and I started violin with my school orchestra in 5th grade (I was 12 years old, now I'm 17). I started off like you, only doing it as a hobby and because my mom forced me to. I didn't get a private teacher until 6th grade and even then I wasn't committed and practiced maximum 30 minutes a day. It wasn't until a year ago that I decided I want to major in it. My problem is, I feel like I am so behind everyone else and it terrifies me. I am in two good youth orchestras. In the very good one, I am a 2nd violinist, 10th chair (there's 21 2nds). In the orchestra that's not as good, I'm a first violinist but absolutely butchered my seating audition and got last chair. I feel like the only reason I got into the better one is because I had been in one of the conductors orchestra before. Basically I feel like I don't belong there, like it's an accident I managed to make it this far. And I feel like no matter how many hours I put in, I'll never catch up. I auditioned for a solo with my orchestra a week ago (video audition) with meditation from thais. It was the first "performance" where I actually thought I did pretty good. Well I just got back the results, and I didn't even make it through the first round. But it seems like every one of my friends and basically everyone that auditioned did. I feel like I was the only one that didn't make it. I'm trying so hard not to compare myself or take it personally, but it's impossible. I get terrible stage fright, and I've never had a performance where I genuinely thought I did good (except mediation, which didn't even make it trough). What's worse is I have horrendous issues with focusing and I can rarely practice more than 20 minutes without feeling the need to eat something or get a drink of water or tidy my room or do other useless things that have nothing to do with violin. Now I'm back to practicing only 40 minutes at max a day. Time somehow slips away from me. It's like one second it's 1:00 pm and the next it's 5:00 and I've managed to accomplish nothing and then I just make excuses for myself, saying "tomorrow ill do____". But then tomorrow comes and goes. I wish I could practice 2 hours AT LEAST so I could improve more but I just cannot force myself to no matter what I do even though I WANT TO. I literally just finished book 7 Suzuki, meanwhile everyone else my age is doing Paganini and Shostakovitch. My first actual concerto I did was only like 6 months ago, and it wasn't even the whole thing it was just the first page of Bruch no. 1. I've never done any competitions besides federation, which isn't even really a competition. I'm not in any quartets, I don't recognize composers or concerto when I hear them, I don't know much about music theory, and my technique is underdeveloped compared to my peers. I think my playing is decent, but that's all it really is. Decent. My teacher encouraged me to major in music and she is helping me prepare and seems to think I can do it, but I'm not convinced. I get such a terrible pit in my stomach when I think about it because I'm so scared I'm not good enough and like i said I get bad stage fright so idk how I would even survive college auditions. They are less than 10 months away. Sorry, I know this comment is extremely long. I just needed to get it off my chest because it's been brewing in me for more than a year at this point.

Hey friend!! Thank you so much for sharing your whole story. I can honestly say that I relate to much of it. In my youth orchestras, I was also quite a low chair. There have been competitions where it seemed like all my friends would pass a round, leaving only me behind. I struggle to focus while practicing, and I am STILL not playing Paganini like some of my peers are... but these aren't the point. At the end of the day, it's about how much you love this craft enough to sacrifice and work hard for it. By the way, how much you "love" music isn't shown by how much you practice or how good you are at it. It's about what satisfies you in your pursuit of this art, and why you're doing what you're doing. Are you pursuing a major in music because your teacher thinks you can? Because you can't imagine a life without it? Because you want to get better? All of these are valid reasonings, but some of them will compel to act you more than others. I'd encourage you to think about what it is *you* are looking for if you do decide to major in music, and not worry about any what ifs. If it's truly something you're putting your heart into, then there will be a way. If it's something genuinely daunting and not worth the sacrifice for you, then that is OKAY! Just because you're not a music MAJOR does not mean you're not a MUSICIAN. I wish you all the best, and I hope some decisions start to clear up as the year goes on! :)

When you hold any college or university degree, you qualify for more areas than just your area of study. A college / uni degree tells people you have a high level of cognition, critical thinking, reasoning, writing, research, problem solving abilities and skills. It tells people you can preservere enough to obtain that degree. When you hold a music degree, you are telling people that you can work (perform) under severe and stressful, high stakes conditions. It tells people that you have the tenacity to over-prepare for your appearances / performances. It tell people you know how to handle and perform under conditions where you have one shot and only one shot to get it right. This really helped me. I'm about to go into high school and I've been thinking about perusing music for a while now. Sometimes I feel like I'm just not good enough or like I won't have enough time to be good enough when college applications do begin. I'm a pianist but my family cannot afford lessons, so I've gotten myself books on music theory and I've been teaching myself theory and technique for a bit now. I'm still a beginner, but I'm going to practice as much as I can. I love music, and I feel like this really helped me figure out what I want to going forwards. This video is awesome! I’m considering being a music major. It’s the only thing I keep coming back to after researching for years. I’ve been playing my instrument since I was 11, but have been a musician since I was 8. I didn’t start considering pursuing it until I was 13. I’m applying to college somewhat soon (by 2023). My private lessons teacher keeps going on these lectures about his time in college and it sounds like so much work but yet so rewarding. Hopefully I’ll have an experience like that.

The thing with music is people don’t view it as a career, they view it as just a side gig or hobby while they pursue more realistic careers such as healthcare career, which I don’t know how they pursue anything other than music, because there’s only a slim chance you’ll make it big in music. Or they view it as something you can teach yourself through books and internet and you don’t need to go to college for it. So they pursue another field or get a day job while they pursue music on the side, which I still don’t know how people pursue other fields when music is their main skill. With me, I pursued computer science instead of music and I stopped ultimately because coding was just not music, I thought I could relate computer science to music theory but you just can’t, they are different fields. Computer science is all about coding and algorithms and that requires a totally different brain. With fields like medicine however, there are specific requirements to become a doctor, ie college then medical school. You can’t be a self taught doctor, but you can be a self-taught guitarist/musician. Also, sorry I deleted my comment but you gave me advice on what to do besides music and you said if I remember that it doesn’t matter what field you pursue but the commitment you make and the challenging of yourself to go through some rigorous education.

I'm learning that the study of music is so much more in depth than what you can acquire on the internet or self-study. There's something about having a mentor (private teacher) that walks with you through your journey as a musician and shares their personal wisdom that just can not be replaced. The journey of an artist is more than just technique, which could possibly be learned online. However, I do agree that you do not necessarily need to go to school for this wisdom or experience. What school does allow, that other majors perhaps might not, is time. Time to practice, time to ponder, time and energy to dive deeper. Thank you so much for this video. This has given me hope. I have always been a very musical person and always had a natural “feel” for it but I didn’t start playing piano until I was 15 (I’m 17 now). I’ve never had any formal training but I am currently looking for a teacher that will listen to my goals, help me improve, and act as a mentor to me. I know deep down that I’m super passionate about music but I’ve felt super insecure about myself for starting later than most, and I’ve worried about never becoming a professional musician. I’m currently looking at colleges that offer music programs that are more on the production and audio engineering side because I don’t think I’ll be able to do any performance-based courses. Plus, it’ll be a useful thing to learn because I want to be able to record my own music one day.

i joined my high school chorus during junior year and loved it so much that i considered majoring in vocal performance rather than nursing. the choice isn't something that my parents are very fond of- but after hearing the quote you mentioned, and some encouragement from my choir director, i might minor in music and major in nursing or bio instead of leaving my passion for singing behind. or double major if i work hard enough! i'm a rising senior now and i'm gonna play cello and do chorus again. if things don't work out then that's completely fine. at least i can say that i tried it out :) tysm, truly

Hi. I started the viola at age 11 in my middle school orchestra and switched to the violin the next year. This upcoming year, I am auditioning for my dream music pre-college. My teacher believes in me, my high school teacher believe in me. Only problem: I don’t believe in myself 😅. But anyways, I didn’t start young nor did I have a teacher at a young age but I have a chance of living my dream! This is only possible thanks to the enormous passion I have for music. I'm only sixteen and I graduate high school next year I do want to pursue music and I'm so scared to get rejected into the college not having enough experience. I have a lot of trouble counting like in rhythm I always found that so difficult and I don't know how to read ledger lines. There's a freshman in my orchestra class and she can play Paganini already she's only a freshman and there's me a Junior who can barely play the 3rd book of the Suzuki. I started playing violin when I was ten, but never thought I was going to major in music, until when I was in the age of 13 I was considering it.

I'm 21, and after 2 failed college tries, Psychology and Computer Science (yes, i really don't know what to do with my life), i went to Economics. I'm on the 4th semester, and so far, i don't hate it, i actually like it a little. But i have that feeling that my heart doesn't belong there. I often get caught thinking about music, getting extremely excited just because i heard a new music that i loved, or i learned a difficult song on the guitar. Currently, i plan to find a job in my area so i can buy things that i need, like a new guitar, a better smartphone, and get a driver's license. I don't consider myself young for a music carrer, but i intend to try and pursue something in this area. No matter how much i have to go through, like spend hours a day on a job that i don't love just so i can buy an amplifier for my new guitar. I want to feel like i have a better purpouse than just graduate, work and spend money. I lost 3 years of my life due to depression, mainly about carrer's choice. I don't want to lose more.

Hello, im new to this channel, and I was going to say I'm 25 years old doing my Physics Major undergraduate as a senior with some semesters left to go, I have done double major for some time with Physics Bachelors and was accepted to community college Music associates as well I guess to add on, then I transferred to another university to finish my bachelors degrees or Physics bachelors only is fine, and was hoping to double major Physics and Music at the same time. I am a Physics Major and Music Minor, but then I still audition to try to see if I can do Double Major or pursue a second bachelors in the future after Physics PhD. This idea might widen some perspectives for those wondering about that too. I hope I can do Music Major as well for pursuit of knowledge and gain more insight as I practice violin. I recently got back to lessons on campus and was part of the university orchestra as well and learned so much more. Well I guess it was a question that came out as an idea instead of a question. Hey! Great question. I have to be very honest with you here, music students are notorious for being extremely busy all the time. We constantly have rehearsals, performances, and need to practice. I think it's amazing you have so many other hobbies as well. I'm not saying musicians don't have other things they love doing, but most of the time we have to prioritize music, which may feel limiting if that is not something you want to do. For the longest time I wanted to go into theatre. Then suddenly, when my junior year of high school started, I got the calling to go into music ed and become an orchestra teacher. It's been terrifying. There are some for real amazing players in my high school orchestra, and I see other players at the arts camp I go to and think "how the hell am I going to get into any colleges at my level?" Because I didn't take music seriously until only a few months ago. I've been really trying to practice, but my techniques are all wrong, and I feel so behind. But I'm trying so hard to work and get better so I can stand in front of a classroom of young musicians and hopefully inspire them. But its scary.

I used to be a professional musician, and I’ve never truly realized how much I missed it. It never paid the bills, but it was nice on the side. I’m currently an electrician right now and I hate it. It’s not my passion unlike music and I would love to be able to do music professionally again. It’s something I would be willing to put the dedication into because I’ve always enjoyed it, even when it’s been frustrating.

Hello! Sorry for the long message but just looking for some advice. I'm not sure if i should pursue a music diploma as I'm currently studying a science course and was introduced to the viola in my college's string orchestra where they allowed beginners like me who just started out to perform. I really love the idea of performing again but not sure if I should pursue it as a career. I started learning at 18 years which is already considered "too late" So should I improve my skills first before considering to apply to one or take it as a hobby instead? Hi! Thank you for sharing your story. That's so awesome you just started viola and are really leaning into liking it! I do encourage you to dive deeper into your skills first before trying to apply to school for it. The main reason is because it can be really precious to just learn the music first without worrying about the pressures of monetizing it and getting better for any reason except to create more beautiful music. Of course, I don't think it is ever really too late if it's something you truly desire and are willing to work towards. I just think it won't hurt to keep learning it with no pressures and discover more of what's meant for you. I hope this helps! Cheers :)

Hii, could you help me? I'm 15 years old (almost 16). My dream is to be accepted into a music college to become a professional pianist, work in orchestras... I don't have a piano, so I study with a keyboard. I “started” when I was 14 and, as incredible as it seems, I didn’t evolve at all in that time. I think it's wonderful to have such a dream, and I still do believe that anything is possible if you're willing to sacrifice and work hard for it. The question would be how much are you willing to give for this dream? And, would being a professional be the only thing to satisfy you? Playing music as a hobby can be just as, if not more (sometimes) rewarding. You still have plenty of time to figure out what it is you plan to pursue. Even in college, minoring/double majoring to figure that out is not a bad idea! Sometimes, you never know until you try. I'd say keep leaning into this dream, but also keep your options open to see what else could suit you well. I hope this helps! Wishing you the best! :)

Okay so when I was 7yo I played violin for like 4years and I quit after receiving my degree in music theory. I was not a prodigy but my teacher made me skip my first year because I was playing well. I've been in choir since I was around 10 years old (5th grade) I went all through middle school and high school in choir and I'm still in my choir/music program at my community college. I love singing, and I always will. I really want to continue on in college to become a choir director myself and possibly even go on to do some musicals if I can. I think the problem I face the most when I tell people I'm majoring in music is that they always assume that I play a "traditional" instrument and am really good at it, but I barely have started learning piano, and that's mainly just so I can do scales. I didn't start taking private lessons until late high school as well, however since I've been in choir for so long, I don't have issues with reading music and sight reading (since I did do competitions in High School) Since I decided to start at my community college, I have met some people who have never done choir/band at all through school or taken private lessons, however I can tell they are extremely dedicated and love to learn. Obviously, it's not gonna work out for everyone, however if you are dedicated enough to learn and really want to pursue music, go for it. I would highly recommend starting off in cc like I did or start taking private lessons from people to get you started. The reason I say cc/ any community bands and choirs is because a lot of times you don't need to try out for it and it'll give you a basic idea of what being in an ensemble is like :)

I do not think your age is too late to start learning the violin, but I do think it is very important to find a good teacher who can give you a solid foundation and help you reach your goals. it takes tons of hard work no matter what age you're at, and perhaps starting later will help you take it seriously sooner if that's what you want. as for how long it took me to master violin, I'm still very much a work in progress!! I still have such a long way to go. but, if you want to ask when I started feeling comfortable with it, it was probably around 6+ years of playing for me. I hope this helps!

Hey! I would really consult your teacher on this since he/she probably knows your situation best. For music school, 99% of the acceptance results would come from your playing at the audition. So while it wouldn't be too late, I just don't know many details of skill level/commitment to say more on the topic. I really wish you the best and hope you can figure out what is best for you!

Hey! That's a difficult question. It depends on a lot; does that person have a background in studying music or are they starting as a complete beginner at 25? How determined are they to pursue music? To what extent do they want a career as a pianist (world class soloist, or enough to be paid for gigs and accompany others, etc)? These are all questions I'd be curious to know before being able to answer such a question. Of course none of these answers mean it is impossible to pursue a career in music at any point, but it can be more difficult/have more obstacles depending on the situation. I hope this makes sense!

@@Jose-gq9bt I'd say it would be very difficult since piano takes years to just build a solid foundation, but not impossible if you want to get to a level where you can perform in lower pressure settings (friends, gigs, etc.). It would also take quite a bit of financial investment since lessons can be expensive, so making it a career would definitely have to start as a hobby first and years of dedication. Does this help?

@@SophieCViolin Yes, I wanted to present an extreme case to understand to what extent it is difficult for an adult to learn music. In my case, I started playing the piano at 17 (I had played the guitar before), I pursued a music degree as a pianist, and upon finishing, I switched to studying composition. Is it more likely that, after having studied music, I can dedicate myself to composing contemporary music professionally, even though I am already an adult?

@@Jose-gq9bt Oh wow! So you finished a whole degree in piano? Composing is different; I believe you can do that at any age without having to have years of practice and fundamentals built in. I definitely think you can compose contemporary music as an adult; some great composers didn't even really have lots of training for their great works. They studied tons of scores and were inspired off of those :)

Hi! If you're starting at 18, it might be better to try minoring in music or starting with private lessons first! It also depends on what instrument and school of course. Some instruments and schools are more competitive, and some may be less so. Conservatory can be very intense and it's solely music focused, so it might be overwhelming to jump straight into that. Not saying anything is impossible, just a matter of circumstance and what would be best for the individual. I hope this helps, and I wish you the best! :)
