Hi!! I isolate compounds from marine invertebrates so I’m not looking for phytochemicals. There are many papers out there on compounds from plants so they should be able to help you! Good luck :)

Hey ! Dr. Jessica, I have a question for you. When a student does his/her own research in his/her own lab, do other students help that student in any way? Or does that student have to complete his/her own research alone? 🙏🙂

Hi! Usually PhD projects are conducted independently but it is normal to get help from the other students in the lab with getting trained on how to use methods and instruments. Also, sometimes students will collaborate for writing papers E.g one student will do one part of the study and another student will do another part of the study. So it depends on the situation. For your PhD thesis, the work should be mainly conducted by the person who is writing the thesis.

A post-doctoral research fellow refers to someone who has finished their PhD and is now staff within academia or a company and is conducting research. If you want to stay in research after a PhD then this is usually the type of job you look for. During a PostDoc in academia you will be required to do research, write papers, go to conferences, train students and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. Sometimes you are also required to teach

It appears to be all applied natural products chemistry research your lab is doing, presumably for funding reasons. The natural products chemistry I did as an undergraduate was mostly structural chemistry stuff, far more so than applications. But that was in the 1980s.

What do you specifically mean by ‘structural chemistry’? We aren’t doing any synthesis in our lab st the moment but we do use analytical techniques such as NMR and MS to elucidate the structures of the compounds we discover.

@@drjessicagomezb When we were introduced to carbohydrate chemistry as 2nd year undergraduates the lecturer talked about things like the anomeric effect and the chemical reactivity of carbohydrates in terms of the functional groups within carbohydrates, and the effect of their conformation on reactivity etc, rather than anything much to do with the biochemical fate of carbohydrates. Eg Reactions of the carbonyl group of monosaccharides. Reactions of the hydroxy groups of monosaccharides. Migration of acetyl groups. The opening of sugar epoxides. Oligosaccharides. The synthesis of glycosides. Likewise we surveyed the chemical structures and the reactivity of the other main groups of natural products, far more so than applications. Your PhD sounds like the sort of research industry used to do for themselves up until the mid 1990s. Nowadays they leave it to the universities to do research for them in order for them to save on their research budget.

@@faisalrazzaq6002 I think she said in the video she's isolating natural products that can be used as natural biocides in the oil industry. So presumably one of the aims of her PhD is a search for biocides to replace the ones currently being used in the oil industry that are harmful to the marine environment.

I did my master degree in this field and it was great journey, then started my phd and unfortunately left one year later due to lack of funding. Hard luck for u and your team

I’m sorry to hear that! The PhDs at the MBC are mostly funded, with some self-funding their projects. I’m not sure where you started your PhD but in the U.K. a lot of the time the projects are secured with external funding so the lab isn’t directly paying for the PhD projects if that makes sense? So it is different from some other countries
