NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy is a multinational Headquarters based in Milan, Italy with the operational HQ within "Ugo Mara" barracks in Solbiate Olona.
The unit reports to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and is ready to be deployed globally, at short notice, to face multiple missions. It is a High Readiness Headquarters that can be quickly dispatched to command and control NATO troops on missions within or beyond the territory of NATO member states, for the collective defense of Alliance territory or in pursuit of Alliance, EU, or coalition security interests. Thus, NRDC-ITALY is a highly skilled and responsive NATO multinational HQ with Italy as its framework nation, fully contributing to NATO’s efforts that aim to strengthen deterrence and defense and project stability beyond its borders.
NRDC-Italy was established in 2001 following the request of the Alliance for Italy to join the NATO High Readiness Forces project. The unit is heir to the traditions of the 3rd "Celere" Division and the 3rd Army Corps.
Today, NRDC-ITALY is able to manage a wide spectrum of operations within the three core tasks for the Alliance (Deterrence and Defense, Crisis Prevention and Management, and Cooperative Security). The Command can cover multiple roles employing over 60,000 soldiers, from the Army Corps level in conventional operations to a joint HQ in crisis response operations or stability operations. This capability is possible thanks to an intense exercise and training program conducted by the staff with the subordinate and affiliated units. Among these: the Italian Vittorio Veneto and Acqui Divisions, the 1st UK Division, the Greek 2nd Mechanized Division, the 10th Slovenian infantry battalion, and a Hungarian infantry battalion. And many supporting units from the Italian Armed Forces
In 2005, four years after its establishment, NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy was deployed to Afghanistan at the helm of the NATO International Security Assistance Force. This important mission involved nine months of intense commitment during which NRDC-ITA was fully involved in engagements in the political, military, security, humanitarian, and developmental fields at local, regional, and occasionally international levels. This deployment, followed in 2009 and 2013, earned NRDC-ITA full recognition as an effective defense and security provider in the broader international context. Additionally, NRDC-Italy is also a proud contributor and supporter of national efforts in Italy. NRDC-Italy contributes its military forces in support of Police Forces in homeland security operations in Lombardy. Additionally, the command is a key provider of equipment and personnel in supporting Italy and Europe in emergency management, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. This wide commitment testifies that NRDC-ITA is always ready to support the population… EVERYWHERE RAPIDLY.
In its mission, the HQ can rely on a support Brigade that ensures logistics support and force protection during the exercise of command and control in times of both peace and war. The brigade is divided into two Regiments: the 1st Signal Regiment, based in Milan, guarantees communication networks (radio and satellite) for the command structure.
the Tactical Logistical Support Regiment based at Solbiate Olona projects the command structure into the area of operations and guarantees its security and logistics autonomy.
The barracks, in Solbiate Olona, is the primary home of the NRDC-Italy community. The compound has high-quality training facilities and offers a host of welfare and support facilities for service members and their families. Additionally, the institutional center of NRDC-Italy is Cusani Palace. The historic building, in the heart of Milan, is full of Italian and Milanese history. Both Cusani Palance and Ugo Mara Barracks, allow NRDC-Italy to interact with the surrounding communities via institutional relations, cultural exchanges, and participation in courses and seminars.
Of note, the NRDC-Italy HQ is a multinational team that is manned by professional military and security personnel from many NATO nations. The multinational environment is a key factor that enables NRDC-ITA to operate successfully. This network of professionals, from diverse backgrounds, creates a unique environment that leverages the best from many NATO nations. This community is a multinational family that is fully integrated and bound by common values.
In sum, NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy is a trained, multinational team always ready to confront future challenges. This team is ready, reliable, and can deploy on short notice to meet any threat that challenges the democracy of the Alliance.
