My grandparents always talked about Old Christmas being January 6. They'd say leave Christmas decorations up until Old Christmas. Most urban people think I'm crazy when I tell them about Old Christmas. I knew it was an Appalachian thing. I'm glad you made a video on it. Merry Christmas, Donnie.

I’m an Orthodox Christian now, but grew up in wonderful Baptist Christian home and little church. In my high school years, the Lord took care of my Christian journey by guiding me for a time to good Catholic Christians and attending their masses and turning to Him in prayer when stopping by the local Catholic parish on weekday afternoons. I too, heard growing up about Old Christmas in my Appalachian Mountains and some of the traditions. Since becoming Orthodox and learning of the ancient church and the early Christians, the unbroken history of the Christian faith thoughout the ages, well, the Story of Old Christmas in Appalachia only adds to and enriched my faith in my Sweet and Dear Saviour. Christ Is Born! Glorify Him!

My wife is from Serbia where they are Orthodox Christian and they celebrate Christmas day on January 7th. I lived there for a few years and always liked how they kept Christmas a holy day and it hasn't been commercialized. On Christmas eve, people will go to Church in the evening for mass and then go outside where they have a bonfire going with an oak tree. Gift giving usually only happens on New Years eve and is primarily for the children. My wife does have superstitions on certain days dedicated to saints where she forbids any house work from being done because it can be a bad omen. If you've never seen an Orthodox Christmas Eve mass, it's worth looking up on KZbin. Its a beautiful ceremony and feels very ancient.

Mr. Donnie Laws, when I think of the Old Christmas, I remember my family gathering on Christmas Day at my grandparents house for a big get together and a lot of good food. As a boy, I was always fascinated with the Christmas Story read aloud to all the kids by our grandfather from Luke Chapter 2 in the Holy Bible. This passage of scripture tells of the birth of Jesus Christ. It was a very special time in my life growing up. One of the men would pray, thanking God for the gift of His Son Jesus. Then it was time to eat. A big meal spread out all over the kitchen, always include a large baked ham. My grandmaw would have all sorts of pies and cakes ready for desert. My grandpaw would always have a bushel basket each of red apples and navel oranges near the Christmas tree. Sometimes they would have these huge peppermint candy sticks. All serving as special treats for the kids. As gifts, my grandparents would give each of the kids new money. Usually silver dollar coins. Sometimes uncirculated bills. A simple time in a very special place. A place that still lives today in my heart and memories. So when I think of the Old Christmas I think about the day each year when folks would pause to honor the birth of Jesus and to count their blessings, thankful for all that God has provided for us. Mr. Laws, from our family to yours we are wishing you a Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. - Tennessee Smoky

I enjoy your videos and the beautiful pictures you include. I learned when I was in my teens that the time from December 25th to January 6th is the twelve days of Christmas and January 6th was usually commemorated as the Feast of the Epiphany (the visitation of the 3 kings). That’s why people would leave their Christmas decorations up well after Christmas Day. Our family didn’t quite leave our decorations up that long but I think it’s a beautiful tradition.

My maternal grandmother was born in 1891 England; my mother was born in 1916 in England, met my American father in 1943, married in 1944 and I was born in 1945 in England. I am 78 years old now and treasure the memories of childhood Christmases with some of the English traditions we had. For instance, we put our tree up a few days before December 25 and didn’t take it down until January 6. Never fully understood why but it was our family tradition. About 20 years ago I read that leaving the tree up until January 6 followed the tradition of the Epiphany (12 days of Christmas after December 25) at least that is what I figured out anyway. Thank you so much for telling the story of old Christmas, it clarified our family tradition so much more than I knew before. 👍🏻👏❤️🎄🎁🎅🤶😍🕊🙏

I'm not a Christian, I was raised with a lot of "old Christmas" ideas. The whole thing starts at the solstice and centers around literal light returning to the world. That bit about making sure your chores and laundry are done is still said in my family. We don't want to wash away our luck. We still light fires to ward off mischief. We still look at the "star" as a symbol of hope during the longest night as the sun makes its journey to strength and light. "Santa" was taught as the "Spirit of giving" that lives inside of each person. We have some Christians in the family too -we don't have much issue all celebrating together. Old traditions blend with new ones in time past but togetherness, connection and that love inside of us was the reason for the season. Still is for us. Most of our ancestors came from Europe; English, Irish and my father's side had French. Old Christmas will always be. I always enjoy listening to you telling things. Thanks for the post.

Merry Christmas Donnie, may you and your family have a blessed and safe Christmas season. Thank you for another year of the best, most relaxing videos on the tube. Looking forward to many more. You’ve helped me through a very dark time after my stroke, and I’ll never be able to repay you for that. Thank you for all you’ve done for me.

Happy New Year Mr. Donnie! I had friends growing up that celebrated Christmas on January 6th. They were Greek. An easy way to arrive at old Christmas is to count all 12 days of Christmas the day after the 12th night is the Epiphany or Feast of the Three Kings or Magi. I'm still Christmas‐ing!🎄

Mr. Donnie, I'm 73 years young and come from a Christian family having uncles that were pastors and have never heard of this. I was born and raised in the mountains of southern West Virginia which is part of the bible bell. I was in my early teens before we put up our first Christmas tree. My brothers and I dug that tree up out of those old mountains and once Christmas and New Years was over, we would plant that tree and many others if the weather would allow us. I just guess this is a carrier over from when the Pope stated that Jesus was born on January the 6. Know really knows just when he was born but does that really matter, he was sent to us as our savior. I do hope your family had a blessed Christmas and thanks for this information.
