What is Pathway 2? ECFMG Pathway 2 explained.

The Pathways are available for IMGs to apply for certification with ECFMG. Pathway 2 is good for anyone who graduated after 2021.

Hello Mark! I had a small doubt. My college is WDOMS accredited, but my country (Bangladesh) is yet to get recognized by the WFME. My college even has a sponsor note saying that we're eligible for pathway 2. Yet I've seen a lot of people on Reddit say that without WFME i cannot register for ECFMG in 2027 even though it is recognized by WDOMS. Is WFME really required if they have WDOMS already? I say that i will register around 2027 because i will be starting college in May of 2024. In June of 2024, the current WFME recognition will expire.

Hi mark , great work you doing here . So I graduated on May 2022 , I haven’t got my license yet, still waiting on my internship assignment which might take up to 6 months due to technical issues on the medical council system here in Sudan , I’m planning to take step1 on Feb2023 and step2 on Sep at the same year . I went to ECFMG website to find out my university isn’t recognized their , although the SMC (Sudan medical council ) is indeed recognized by the WFME. Should i get ECFMG certification now and if so , dose it have an expiry date? Also am l qualified to take pathway 3 ? Thanks.

Hi there! Thanks for the comment. After your first exam for certification (generally USMLE Step 1), you have 7 years to complete the process. Otherwise, you have to take again. There is an expiration for ECFMG certification as well. I can see that the SMC is recognized by the WFME. Is your medical school accredited by them? Then, you should be okay. Please note that this information is for the upcoming Match 2023. The ECFMG can change things depending on the outcomes of this coming match selection.

Hi! Thanks for the video, excuse me, I graduated in 2017 and I recieved my medical license in that year, it's still valid, however I started a 4 year medical residency in my home country (Mexico), which I just finished, I want to apply for the match2023, which Pathway should I take? Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for the question. Congratulations on finishing residency! Are you fully licensed now to practice medicine? If you are, Pathway 1 is okay for you. If not yet, there are 75 schools that are eligible for Pathway 3. In addition, Mexico's COMAEM is approved by the WFME, so no worries there.

Hey mark! First of all tq for this video, I have few queries I am an Indian , graduated mbbs from kazaksthan (2020 graduate), I must need md degree to be certified by ecfmg but our university is not accepting to give us md degree since there no vacancies for md program. Therefore I am planning to write Uk Plab 1,2, oet and do foundation year 1 from Uk , will I be eligible for this pathway after doing foundation year from Uk? Thank you In advance 😊

Hi there. Thank you for the question and explaining your situation. Well, just to be clear, you do not have an MD, just MBBS? If you are going to do PLAB, OET and Foundation 1 in the UK, I am not sure if that qualifies you for ECFMG certification. I know that UK graduates have several Pathways available for them, but the medical school requirement is still important after 2024. I will do some checking about this.

@@Ritus-diary Hi there. Thanks for clarifying this. An MBBS is the equivalent to an MD, I believe, correct? Is your school listed on WDOMS with a sponsor tab? It looks like starting with this 2023 Match, your school should be approved for ECFMG or your school is WFME accredited. It does not matter what degree you have as long as it is a medical equivalent. You can submit your Form 186 for the first step. Before doing that, I would ask that you check this link: www.ecfmg.org/resources/reference-guide.php It would list your medical school and the degree that is offered that they will accept. Both the US and the UK have different requirements, so I am not sure what is the best step for you.

@@USMDPedia hi mark! Ecfmg require md degree from kazak graduates, in order to get md degree we must complete 2 years of internship,but our university has no vacancies, therefore I’m planning to do internship from Uk . Therefore my question is can I get certification through this pathway?

@@Ritus-diary So you are going to do 2 years in the UK in order to fulfill an MD degree? In that case, by the time you apply for certification, you should be able to go through ECFMG pathways 2, 3 and 6.

Hey Mark. In light of the 2023 changes can explain to me if I can appear in usmle provided that my med school is WFME recognized and also accredited by my local accrediting agency but is not in the WDOMS list? Also will this have any effect on the match process?

I am graduated on september 2021.Currently i am doing my internship in bangladesh and my college is listed to apply through pathway 2. I am about to give my step 1 on december and step 2and ort before july of 2023.This way can i apply for 2023match if get my ecmfg certified ?? By doing so i wont have any us clinical experinece before applying for match. Soshould better wait for 2024 and get some us clinical experience give step 3 and then apply for the 2025 match cycle??

Hello Prashant. Thank you for your comment. How is your internship going in Bangladesh? If you think you need more clinical experience, either the 2024 or 2025 Match might be good for you. As you are going to take your exams in 2023, you can still apply for ECFMG certification. It is up to you to decide to apply that fall for the Match. If you apply and do not get accepted in a Match, you can wait until you get experience then apply again. I hope this helps. Is there any way to take the Step 1 or Step 2 CK earlier?
