What is...persistent homology?

This is really good, thank you. Many years ago when looking at some problems in Engineering, I intuitited a need for some kind of analytic machinery that captured relative scale characteristics, and I see that I need it for the work I'm doing. So today I'm trying to work through "Topology for Computing" by Afra J. Zomorodian.
