Al Garnier Consciousness has nothing special to do with religion. But like all powerful concepts, various religions tried to monopolize it. Science is tethering on the edge of becoming a new religion...

Al Garnier You're a bit too ignorant, primitive and naive to be worth a real debate, so I'll just block you, punk! 😄

Al Garnier “Science may well become a religion” “It is childish nonsense dipshit” This statement by the eminent atheist philosopher Thomas Nagel speaks volumes regarding fanatical atheism. “I believe the defenders of intelligent design deserve our gratitude for challenging a scientific world view that owes some of the passion displayed by its adherents precisely to the fact that it is thought to liberate us from religion. That world view is ripe for displacement” (Thomas Nagel). All the best to you and keep safe during this Corona virus crisis.

rubiks6 Well said!. Totally agree with you “As an explanation of the world, materialism has a sort of insane simplicity. It has just the quality of the madman's argument; we have at once the sense of it covering everything and the sense of it leaving everything out”. (GK Chesterton)

Two of the sharpest snags science has hit so far are quantum mechanics and biology. It seems to me that, in addition to ontological type laws, the mother of nature has some sorts of "administrative" types laws too. "Don't ask don't tell" policy for example. One of the major characteristics of western science I've found is called self-confidence, i.e., even nature doesn't tell, we still desire to keep asking. Unfortunately, self-confidence itself may be nothing to do with rational, or rationalized emotions, rather it is pretty much an emotionalized rationality.

As is shown in geology, biology, paleontology and all natural sciences...nature leaves evidence everywhere.

16:30 Prejudice is a powerful thing. It lets you spend years on research based on assumptions you never tested for validity. I would fx contend that true wisdom would never allow one to speak of "wisdom proper". As to social wisdom, what changed in bird brains, when they first began to put brightly colored berries and stones around their nest and enhance their plumages with colorful straws and petals?

measuring wisdom was an interesting one. We normally read about metaphysics, and having meta biology would just be nice for the field, or would you want to follow another field. Can we come up with our own questions? How do you measure wisdom? where would your definition of meta be? comprehensiveness, convention, transcendence? Starting off what is life makes sense, As an initial question. If you've forgotten to be a biologist, where would you start? How would it relate to realism and idealism, would you be redefining concepts of realism, or would you stick to Aristotelian definition?

As a philosopher, it seems it is okay to include some element of personal belief, as a biologist the focus would be on how to do research that is epistemological.

We’re not “modified monkeys”. We’re great apes, and monkeys and great apes split like 40 million years ago. Kind of disappointing from the guy who supposedly founded the field.

I thought the same, it was very disappointing to listen to him, but I suppose it has something to do with Michael Ruse not coming out of science but out of humanities, not like the next speakers.

The philosohy of Nature was treated to tangentially. What does nature say about the conscious experience? Why has DNA 'spontaneously' assembled, and generally stored info and run counter to natural entrophic direction?? DNA is the key to understand what biology is doing.. How and why. Maybe treat these questions in later episode? Gratitide.

Which kinda ticks me off on religion as doctrine. Humans have done a great job at invasive species, and I think us humans are great. I think it's really weird that we're still doing the cult stuff. I get that a likeminded small group has big big power, but as the dominant, self aware species, we are dicking it up for no epistemic reason

Seems to me to be a bit too much theism for a “philosophy of biology”. Even things like wisdom and altruism are just evolved attributes which are useful for survival and aren’t unique to humans. “God” is simply an unnecessary and useless concept for getting closer to truths about evolutionary biology, imo.. love the show

If it's like Philosophy of Science in general it will be a whole lot of Conjecture, Sci-Waffle and Sci-History... Let's see if I'm right.. I don't see why these are academic subjects. It is not useful in the real world, except for making money by charging students to learn the useless knowledge. The Biology of Philosophy (human ideas as a broad definition) is useful knowledge. How many Philosophers of Biology graduates have made a great (or any...) contribution to biology, or philosophy for that matter.... Liberal La La Land waste of time qualification.
