18:44 That's at John's! Great episode as always; I did not expect that so many philosophers would be reductionist about truth given that philosophy is love of wisdom, i.e. some kind of truth. Having a variety of opposing theories about truth does make one feel as if getting a grip on the notion though I must wonder - does it really bring us closer or is it merely a mechanism by means of which we suppress our dread? Anyhow, I do hope to run into you in Oxford next year. Thanks for making sure these episodes are so accessible!

There is no truth from science until there is proof of it by experiment. Apparently, this fact about science is what inclined a hero of science, Richard Feynman to say, 'the only truths we know come from our experiences.' Having lots of similar experiences or doing lots of experiments based upon a theory gets us closer to truth. This program heading towards its 2000th episode is for me, proof that Dr Feynman was so on the ball. Thank you so much, Robert Lawrence Kuhn.

I disagree with Shermer. Natural selection selects for those that assume the rustling in the grass is a predator not because that is the assumption that is "right" more often, but because that is the assumption that increases the likelihood of survival. The rustling in the grass is probably only a real threat to survival a relatively low percentage of the time. Most of the time it really is just going to be the wind or a non-predatory animal or something else that's not a threat. Those that assume the rustling isn't a threat would be "right" a higher percentage of the time, but they would die out much more quickly than those that assume the opposite. So no, natural selection does not favor "seeing reality as it is".

Great point and I’m glad to see it in the comments. In fact Shermer has it exactly wrong. Evolution selects for a dumbed down experience of reality, optimizing for the simplest(low calorie) but effective model. If you’re interested in more on this, check out Don Hoffman.

IemonandIime Yes.. I agree! His argument might be for why we might have a bias towards anthropomorphism (eg. gods, animism etc.) but not at all for realism! There’s a paper by Sharon Street which uses the same argument as Shermer for why realism is INCOMPATIBLE with Evolutionary theory ie. that we are biased towards survival - not truth! fewd.univie.ac.at/fileadmin/user_upload/inst_ethik_wiss_dialog/Street__Sharon_2006._A_Darwinian_Dilemma_for_Realist_Theories_of_Value..pdf

STAR0SS Of course, but the point remains. Given imperfect knowledge, over reacting is more survivable than under reacting. There definitely must be some overlap between our perceptions and reality but there is no reason to believe our senses and sense making capacities are reliable in this domain, in fact the logic points in the exact opposite direction.

Read the first 18 verses of John's gospel for an amplified version of what Jesus was referencing with his brief exchange with Pilate. This meaning was entirely skirted by those in the video, because substance is never the object of Robert's "search". Men, staggering about under the influence of their hatred for authority and judgment, are in an insensible stupor. Just like Pilate, they're not likely to see the Glory Train before it runs them down.What a royal headache that will be.

This episode was a perfect opportunity to discuss Heidegger's existential analysis of truth as unconcealment! I wish the episode focused more on continental philosophers' perspectives of truth, but this video was nice nevertheless. An amazing essay of Heidegger's views of truth as unconcealment is in Oxford University's Professor Mark Wrathall's 2010 book, Heidegger and Unconcealment. There is more to truth than coherence and correspondence. There are cases where we use the term truth to describe something as it really is in its essence. For instance, a "true friend." Heidegger's account of truth as unconcealment encompasses all these different perspectives in an incredibly insightful way.

The way to posses truth is by not possessing it. You need to take the process of "not knowing" and formalize it in such a way that you can come as close as you please, to it, knowing that you can never actually achieve it. We become more accurate, and truthful, by formalizing the idea that "we do not and cannot know X". The way we can achieve this is by saying that things are Equivalent. Multiple things being in some sense simultaneously valid all at the same time, by virtue of profound ambiguity. We can achieve this with Equivalence.

truth is an illusion invented by the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, which has been put together by the past conditioning of the brain. truth is your truth. The complete and utter end of the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, which is an illusion invented by the past conditioning of the brain, is the beginning of Truth for the very first time, in each and every moment of daily life. There is no my Truth or your Truth. Truth belongs to No One. Truth is an energy beyond matter, but can act upon matter. what we talk about when we talk about truth. There are a couple different types of truth. Mathematical truth (non-contradictory axiomatic systems) Correspondence theory of truth (ie: does this statement match reality) Etc... The important thing here that nobody talks about is: what is knowledge? My theory of knowledge is: in order for us to build a model of reality... every single idea is defined by what category we assign it to. We build in our minds a hierarchy of categories. When we learn, we are modifying the informational content of that hierarchy of categories. Knowledge therefore, is the shape of that logical hierarchy of categories. As long as you periodically sift through your logical category hierarchy, searching for contradictions and modifying the structure of the categories... You will be getting.. closer to truth.

All these things require a profound understanding, an expertise, not a pristine clarity of certainty. That very concept is chimerical, except as it relates to knowledge.

For example, the Personality of Godhead does not suffer, whereas Jesus is famous for suffering. The absolute is not different from His real names. The meanings of Sanskrit words are definite, based on the rules of grammar applied in context. Sanskrit is perfectly crafted, not a mundane language like English. Kṛṣṇa means full of truth and bliss, all-attractive, and having a gorgeous blackish form.

@Bombay Boy The religions of meat eaters are demoniac. Do you think people who eat cows are following a true religion? Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu said cow-killers rot in hellish life for as many thousands of years as there are hairs on the body of the cow. ( vedabase.io/en/library/cc/adi/17/166/ ) I don't believe it is actually kind to people to pretend their nonsense beliefs are religious. Before I learned anything about Kṛṣṇa, I was a university student majoring in Environmental Studies and learned meat production takes between ten and a hundred times the amount of resources used for growing vegetarian foods. Since people typically get about 20% of calories from meat, I knew vegetarian diets can feed twice as many people. Now that the human population quadrupled in the past century, the Earth's climate stability is being dangerously disrupted by human behavior, and people's addiction to meat is arguably driving it. Now that the routinely brutal treatment of animals is threatening to end the world, my patience for meat eaters claiming to be religious is over. I have more respect for the animals they consume.
@PaulHoward108
@PaulHoward108 4 жыл бұрын
@Bombay Boy My impression is regular people who routinely eat meat care about people and pets, but they ignore what they are doing to animals raised for food. People do not usually seem at even a little demoniac when I interact with them, and I don't like thinking of people that way. However, politeness is a poor substitute for moral integrity. The world has become like hell for most animals because the predominant religions incoherently allege animals have no soul. Now the ugra-karma from this abuse is threatening to consume the world. Even COVID-19 is reportedly brought to humans by people's meat consumption. I just really think it's past time for the religions of meat eaters to admit they were wrong, and I'm saying it since they won't.

If we assume that the Discrete Set {0,1} and the Continuous Open Interval (0,1) are Equivalent (by axiom), then we can immediately deduce that "A hard deterministic universe and a hard probabilistic universe are therefore Equivalent. And it is profoundly ambiguous whether the universe is one, or the other. Hence, a duality, and it is fundamentally BOTH simultaneously". Ok once you understand that, then it is a very small step to understand that "Certainly True and Probably True can be Quantitatively Identical, but since they are Qualitatively Different we should regard them as being Equivalent". A simple fact related to this is the observation that 0.999... = 1 identically. We might even say that truth is 'topologically dualistic'. There is no way to say that Deterministic Truth is any more or less valid than Probabilistic Truth. To assert otherwise is necessarily just human bias. There is no way to objectively prefer one over the other. And you are now very close to the truth, closer than you'd ever imagined Mr. Kuhn.

I agree. Impossible things cannot exist and we don't see them in nature. Only things that are possible exist. And anything true is also possible and if it collapses into 4 dimensional reality it is true. But in the metaphysical world impossibility exists and something possible can also be false. Although personally I think mind is separate from brain. Mind is the only thing that can be false and think of impossible things, and that doesn't seem natural when everything else in the universe dare I say "behaves" logically, and is inherently true.

The question isn’t exactly clear for me. Does he want to know the definition of the word or is he interested in the things to which the word can be applied ? Because he discovered at least three different meanings of the word in this video and doesn’t seem to be content with that. Each meaning of the word “truth” will point to different things. If he is trying to collapse all three meanings it is no wonder that he’s frustrated.

The absolute Truth is: no discrepancy between the reality itself and our picture of the reality. We differ in our beliefs and opinions which means some of us are closer to the Truth then others. Since the reality is to complex to get a ful knowledge about it during one's life span, probably noone can ever know the ultimate Truth. On the other hand, it's not so terribly difficult to come quite close to the truth about some important fragments of the reality. The reason why so many people fail is, they are not really interested in finding the objective truth, because it always goes along with sacrifices. They search for and accept the Truth only to the point when they stil don't need to sacrifice anything - like almost all of the scientists interviewed in this video. One simple example: in discussions one is concentrating rather on defending one's own position then on analysing the position of the counterpart. (Indeed, there is not enough time for the analysis therefore a discussion is never a good way of searching for the Truth). Even when it's obvious then the conterpart is right one tries to make the own "defeat" less bitter through some linguistic tactics which all together bring us farther back from knowing the Truth. The first thing which has to be sacrificed in discussions is one's own pride.

Under the opinion that facts can, may, and do change, then beneath the reasoning of mathematics, 1 + 1 = 2 demonstrates the existence of absolute truth. So, under this premise, one can say facts change and truth is constant.

John Hicks is compelling: the ultimate truth is not rational. But it's not irrational either. It's a unique understanding of reality, not just a rational one but a deeply intuitive and bewildering one. The Tao Te Ching tries to bring it to us in an intuitive manner, Sufism also but in a passionate way and Jesus tried it in a loving way. The ultimate truth is an ultimate mystery occasionally perceived by some of us.

There's a difference of something( Particle physicist haven't concluded that they discover them, dhamma practitioners say they have seen them but I didn't yet). Teaching of Theravada Buddhism mentions about a physical particle named RUPA, as the ultimate building block of everything. What beyond that Nature, that is consciousness. Looking for someone or something, which is more intelligent; it's like searching someone unknown or something unknowon, in the Dark. I went to that dead end (Only fools can have that experience while they alive ). I do not know what beyond that moment is.

Interesting discussion. There's an interesting new philosophy called Q ism which argues that truth has to do less with character (good vs bad/evil, right vs wrong, reality vs fiction) than it does with purity. In other words, if something is pure it is true. It's the complete absence of bias, existence for what it is.

The concept ‘truth’ is shown to be highly elastic. Human tendencies to fix meaning lays traps for misconception & confusion. The idea that objective truth is only possible in logic & mathematics, that “everything else” is only subjective interpretation, rests on a belief that reality, indeed the world is wholly created by & inside brains. That direct access to the world is not just precluded but impossible. And since it’s been demonstrated that sense perception can be illusory, it appears that truth about how things stand outside of brains can only ever be provisional... But what if advocates of these theses themselves are in the grip of an illusion? What if this is all simply superstition - Nothing more than elaborate conjuring tricks with words? After all, if the rules of these theses are followed, then they are at best just interpretation. And what if the truth of human existence is far graver than the subjective illusion or hallucinated reality being popularly espoused? And that the world, rather than a creation of the human brain, actually facilitates the rise of evolutionary life, of brains, etc.. In this case the internal/external conception of mind can be challenged & the concept truth may be restored to its natural home within the everyday life of human beings where it was born.

Truth is like other abstract words. Truth is a concept, and it depends on the context it is used in. Often dependent on the knowledge relative to the observer and whether other aspects of the truth are unobserved at that moment. What the observer knows and his interpretation of it is the problem, not what is true.

If you lose something here and then look for it somewhere else for the rest of your life, you can never find it. Truth is to be found in Faith which human being didn’t discover or invent but rather Faith was revealed to them through many Messengers of God. Theory of Revelation is beyond human reason and understanding; it has to be grasped through Faith only. Any philosophical questioning can't solve the riddle of this because Almighty Himself kept it aloof from human reach. If it could be proven so vividly, then there would be no athiests and no test of Faith as such. Faith is a choice. You choose it and you're saved. You reject it and you're damned to suffer and look for answers forever on a lonely desert. But I highly appreciate the sincerity of you quest, Mr Kuhn. Hope, God may guide you to Truth.
