The popiah you ate now is nothing compared to what the ingredients were used back about 40 years ago. Back then , a popiah can be classified as a wholesome meal by itself as it has of spread of turnip slow cook in soy sauce , thinly sliced cucumber , scrambled eggs , chopped up long beans , leafy chinese lettuce , sliced and diced tofu , crackling shrimp crackers and pork crackling wrap up in really thin popiah skins . Now its just the turnip, loads of crackers , thin slices of cucumber and it cost a bomb .

My maternal gandpa used to sell Popiah for 0.20cent per piece around Pudu/K.L area during the early 70 and he passed away when to price went up to 0.25cent per piece in the mid '70. The price today shot up far away for the past 50 years!

Popiah cannot keep..u must eat it up within 2-3 hrs., Doug..or it will go sour. If it is deepfried, it will keep longer & yes, it is a meal in itself.

“Poh Piah”, “poh” means thin, “Puah” means biscuit. “Poh pain” literally means thin skin biscuit or cake.

Time 4:02 Popiah - The word "PoPiah" is from southern China Fujian dialect (or in Malaysia is know as Hokkien dialect). Its meaning is Thin (Po), "Biscuits"(Piah) or more accurately here should be wafer. It is a form of Spring Rolls (Hope that you know what is a Spring Rolls 😅). It is different from the others spring roll is its very thin wrappers used to make the Popiah. It is always very interesting to see how traditional manually the Popiah skins (thin wafer wrappers) are make by the master by holding lump of batter dough and skillfully wipping over a hot flat pan to produce a paper thin Popiah skin.

@@MuhammadIamhardBrucelee chinese springrolls are not fried here it is freshly rolled. The skin is edible although not 100% rice flour(wheat is present). Vietnamese springrolls are transparent as rice wrapper is thin. Although malays here fried them but those are smaller snacks. Chinese springrolls are larger. Since we put wet turnips, cucumbers among other stuff it has to be eaten quickly. Keeping it longer will cause the skin to 'melt away'.
