I completely agree with your analysis, and the trend for design in tech is moving towards a generalist designer, therefore product designer as a title is trending up. You are expected to do everything, research, interaction, and ultimately visual. Not sure why Google is still holding onto the Interaction Designer title, it's rare among big firms.

Exactly! Internally, everyone's title is different but most of the roles externally are titled "Interaction Designer", not sure why though, perhaps a legacy title. It's unfortunate that the trend is headed that way because it's definitely a lot for one person to juggle but, as I've mentioned in other videos, it's still a great way to gain experience for junior / entry-level designers. I love this. Yes, UI design gets no respect when in fact it should. Totally agree with you on that.

I think it's because a lot of xfn partners don't understand the value of well-designed interfaces but, you could also argue, that designers need to get better at communicating their value. I think a lot of it has to do communicating in terms of user and business impact instead of design changes i.e. we have XYZ needs and the larger search box helps us achieve that instead of "so the search box is now larger and more prominent." Maybe I should make a video about this :)

When you say “higher level”, are you asking if they get paid more than UXD / UI or if it is a more senior role in the UX career ladder?

@@LaSheek Ah, I see. So, technically, PD is its own role with its own career ladder but it mimics the UX Design ladder. Instead of Designer I, II, etc, you'll see: - Product Designer I - Product Designer II - Senior Product Designer And so on. So you can think of it as it's own separate role. But, like I mentioned in this video, they're all so similar it really doesn't matter. For example, my title at Google is Interaction Designer but I do Product Design in that role as well, despite the job title. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! 🙏🏼
