When I left school at 16, I got a job as an apprentice toolmaker. I did a 5 year apprenticeship, as well as another 2 more years fully qualified until the company I worked for went bust. I absolutely loved the type of work. Everything made from scratch, by my own hands. No cnc machining, other than the parts that needed to be wire eroded. Sadly it is a job that can be done by a machine nowadays though

Keep up the good work. We need to get the youngin's interested. Maybe some emphasis, and footage on the necessities of precision during die construction. I built dies for 40+ years and would love to see the youth brought into the shop. This country needs to regain some respect for someone working in the tool and die trade. When I apprenticed, there was admiration and respect shown to you when asked what you did for a living. That seems to be gone, and would tend to attract people if they could be proud of what they do. Seems nobody wants to get dirty anymore.

I'm 21 yrs old and I work in a Tool & Machine shop as a press operator (still new to it) in Wisconsin. It's true that most people my age don't want to work in this field, every time we hire people my age the minute they have to start doing some manual labor (mainly transferring heavy parts) they all walk out. It's sad to see people my age have poor work ethics like that, especially since most of them are physically stronger than I am too. its not all people my age but it is a lot, I'm also the youngest person who works in this shop. I've been here for 7 months now and I'll admit at first I didn't like it and was only there for the paycheck but now I'm really starting to take interest in it and want to learn all I can about the job.

All dies are tools but not all tools are dies! This means dies are a subset of tools. For example a plier is a tool just like a die. A drill or milling cutter is also a tool. So also molds for plastic molding and molds for metal casting. A stamped part is what comes out of the die when stock strip or coil is fed to it. It's the result and the die is a cause. Words die and tool are used interchangeably.

When to choose Progressive Press and when to choose Transfer/tandem press? what is parts size constrain in each press
@WisconsinMetalParts2 жыл бұрын
The constraint will be the tonnage and size of the punch press, compared to the individual part. The length of the progression to make the part cannot exceed the size of the press bed or the press tonnage. This needs to be calculated on an individual basis.

Why do you use the sensor at 1:34? Could you please explain it?
@WisconsinMetalParts2 жыл бұрын
This sensor is to detect that the stripper plate has come down into position all of the way. It is there to help prevent or limit tool damage in the case of a misfeed or slug pulling.

Is the pilot hole applied prior to this process?
@bpowda843 жыл бұрын
The pilot hole is punched at the first station along with the other two holes. This has to be done on that the pilot punches can align the strip on every progression after the first hit. If you added the pilot holes later down the line, the material could already be misaligned.
@westhomas80073 жыл бұрын
@@bpowda84 But at each progression/stage a bullet-tipped post comes down to the pilot holes, right? Assuming it is bullet-shaped so it has a nice lead-in edge to guide the pilot hole into correct position each time?
@bpowda843 жыл бұрын
@@westhomas8007 that’s correct. The point on the pilot punch is tapered allowing it to “pull” the material into place if it needs to.
@girishshah8929 Жыл бұрын
A pilot is just like the fine tuning wheel on the radio. It's job is to correct very minor inconsistencies in progression. The best practice is to place pilots in the die as early in progression as possible. And they must always engage with the stock strip before any of the punches or stripper contacts the strip. That's the reason you see them projected out from the stripper while all other punches have retracted within the stripper.
