Card carry die maker since 1985 served my apprenticeship under my father in our own shop for my first 9 years from 80-89. Closed our shop in 2016 but Still doing it today for an old old customer in 2024.. I enjoy seeing others work. Yours is good stuff.

Nice clear explanation of the process and visuals. I personally used the Lamina stock guide/lifter system when possible. Strip moves easier and gives better lift to the strip. Bonus, they are good looking too!

Pilot pins and double thickness I would imagine. Probably portable buckle switch at material entry too.

As a designer, I never understood placing hardened inserts into hardened retainers. That screws the Toolmakers down the road. If it doesn't cut, it doesn't need to be hardened.

Thanks for your comments Scott. While your comment is correct in some cases it is not true in all cases. Often a company will dictate it’s own die standards based on years of experience and what works best for their particular situation. For example, in the case of a die chase, a soft block could wear if it comes into contact with the stock strip during the stamping cycle, say you are running stainless. Soft steel can also attract burrs and get debris or shavings pressed into them which could result in the final part being marked unintentionally.
