This might be a long shot but it may have some thing to do with the Omi alliance since Watase mentioned in his letter when he announced the disbandment that the Omi alliance was a little over 100 years old in 2019, but it's just a shot in the dark because this looked quite ambitious for just a spin-off prequel, this is Judgment level of spin-off and it just coincidentally named Century for reasons completely unrelated to Yakuza

On the off chance this does end up being in-universe to Yakuza, I think it’s super interesting that this game is clearly unabashed in its violence. Yakuza has always had some extreme violence, like Kiryu grinding people’s faces on pavement and scorching heads in microwaves, the blood and general motions of characters are never as visceral as Project Century. If this is somehow a story about Makoto Tojo or the founding of the Omi Alliance, it’d be breaking RGG’s self-imposed rule of playing as criminals; the same rule that had Watase cast out Y5 playable character list. I think pairing that with some uncomfortable levels of violence would be a super interesting decision. Though, of course, I’m not banking on this to be interested in the game, it’s RGG: they’ve more than earned some faith in a new project

I'm thinking that some thinking at SEGA and RGG may have shifted policy on this in recent years. Mostly because they've received positive feedback on their games that have been more mature and realistic with their violence (I'm thinking Lost Judgment in particular here, which while not notably more violent than the average RGG game in most combat sequences, was definitely more so in cutscenes what with how certain characters get killed) and because they are *finally* moving beyond Kiryu it seems. Because I think the thing really was that they never wanted Kiryu himself to become too violent and thus too brutal to be heroic, because they wanted him to represent the "chivalry" concept of the yakuza more than the criminal aspect, and they needed him to do that so he could be potential SEGA mascot character, which he did end up becoming. But if they make a more violent game with an unabashed criminal protagonist they may not be able to make that character a classic heroic mascot character, but that's fine now that they have multiple versions of that with Kiryu and Ichiban.

Here's what's really wild: The first Yakuza/LaD game was in many ways, a spiritual successor to Shenmue and its design philosophies, with the notion of a "living world" full of details and eventually mini-games being the biggest indicator of this over time. In many ways LaD was Shenmue perfected. Shenmue itself was originally intended to be an origin story for the Virtua Fighter series - sort of like a Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero type of spin-off - before it got too large and became its own thing. So the RGG team not only going back to working on Virtua Fighter, but project century maybe being a secondary game being developed out of their work on a new virtua fighter (as some of the other comments here are suggesting) is like the RGG team completing a big circle. They're coming home to the origin point that Yu Suzuki started oh so many years ago that Nagoshi was apprenticed on under him, but with a new leadership and direction. It will be interesting to see what this means for the team, for the series, and for the legacy of both.

Funny that people (including me) to think Project Century would be Tojo Makoto's game despite the name "Tojo Makoto" itself only mentioned once in Yakuza 6 loading screen. Even that only exist in international version of the game. The name "Tojo Makoto" didn't exist in the Japanese version.

I do hope this is a showcase for a new game engine. As much as we love the Dragon Engine and how it improved overtime, let's be honest it is definitely due for an upgrade. Assuming Yakuza 6 had a 2-year dev cycle, that would mean they worked on this engine for over 10 years. And yet SOMEHOW they never managed to make some physics work for bowling and other minigames that we lost over the years. I personally don't even need an upgrade equivalent to the jump between Kiwami to Dragon anyways. I think it deserves something like the jump between Source1 and Source 2 where nothing much was really changed other than more efficient production and improving the physics engine.
