I love watching art documentaries with snobby art world people! I think they are better than watching junky reality shows... I do print certificates of authenticity for my paintings. I do them on heavy stock paper, in my home printer and include a photo, title, technique, and all the relevant information, and also put a blurb that even though I'm selling the original painting, I reserve the rights to the image and use of it, then I sign it.

Veronica, Thank you for the info about selling originals but retaining the right to your further use of that original. That actually helps me out of a conundrum of my own. ❤

Provenance comes from the Latin providencia which means to “come from”. What ownership path an object took to get to you owning the object. From studio to you. It’s the Who/when/where of who first bought it from the artist, to whom it was sold to and so on & so forth until it you bought/own it.

On the certificates I provide for my artwork, they also include stipulations about copyright ownership. This is because one client thought he would reproduce the artwork and make money from the sales and not give any royalties. When I told him he was required to if he reproduced the work for selling, he became so pissed off that he destroyed the piece and then returned it to me.

I was doing freelance sales and sold 2 Andy Warhol prints directly to a collector in LA. They didn't give a sh*t about the certificates. Although, I will have to say they were experts in Warhols AND they CAREFULLY inspected one of the pieces for a long period of time... I was sweatin' bullets, btw. Lol. The other one, they took 1 quick look at it and knew it was authentic right away so.... Also, it did help that i mentioned where they were originally purchased in SF. Some of these major galleries know each other VERY well.... As for my own work that I sell, I haven't included them since i've sold directly to buyers. mAYBE i should just to be fancy. Meow.

Yeah that was always my understanding collectors know anyone could print off a certificate. They want proof. I never knew that certificates were a thing for artist selling original works till this video. If it is to prove the artist painted it why don't they just us a finger print on the back of the canvas? If I do it I am thinking about a toe print, just because I do not want everyone having my finger print. LOL I am willing to do what it takes for customer satisfaction! I learn so much from these videos and comments thanks for sharing.

@@shonaranae4588 Funny, a toe print! -Now THAT'S a real knee slapper. No, but seriously,... -Now THAT'S a real knee slapper. No, but seriously,...- I really do like your line of thinking.... Something that's original, can't be copied, and may be used to authenticate. 👏👍Cool. Great idea! I was even going to suggest a drop of blood....🤔😱😬. But who knows what somebody could do with my DNA in the future. I know I'm not that important, but strange things are happening these days. Besides, pricking your finger for blood on a painting seems a bit much, and kinda GROSS! Nah! Bad idea totally. P.S. I'm on KZbins surveillance list.. Seems saying I was hitting my own knee was maybe looked upon as some sort of threat. WOW!!! That's crazy!

I found a really great website that talked about CoAs and I decided to offer them with my prints. It would be really easy for someone to copy a print, and then claim it was an authentic print, so I have a template I use which lists my name, print name, number, etc, and has a picture of the print, and which is then signed by me to indicate that the print came from me, and is a REAL limited edition print. (I don't do this with open edition prints, and I hadn't considered doing it with original artwork, because - well - framed, original artwork, etc. Do you think I should?) If you want, I can try to find a link to the website I was using and post it back here?

I used a certificate of authenticity and value for insurance purposes. Should someone purchase a piece they receive one for insurance purposes in needing to replace the work, for cases of damage in a fire or flood. It puts a value to it through what it would cost for me to re-create a piece. That value also updates so I keep track of them and send updates. This doesn't increase the value of my work, but as my costs go up, supply and demand, etc. the cost to recreate goes up. It helps the person who purchased or collector feel as though they made an investment and the comfort that it's one less thing to worry about in a tragedy. This is strictly for originals though. On prints, you typically have a digital file and can just reprint unless screen printed. This helps me to dictate my value also as time goes along but not nearly as much as actual sales and general busy-ness, etc.

Great stuff! I used Photoshop to generate my own COAs. Because I create digital art, they accompany any of my prints, even those framed, that have my signature on them. I think it adds a nice touch and let’s the recipient know that it actually came from me and that it is not a digital signature!

You both also make me laugh a lot. I've been painting since a while now but decided to make a living of it since a year ago. I'm still dealing with the Copyright thing... is that really urgent or necessary?

awesome video as always. however there is also a certification people can get while they are still living... Under the Indian Arts & Crafts Act of 1990 allows Indian Products & / or made by Indian Labor & the Indian artist can be certified as an Indian artisan. i am a Choctaw tribal member with a NCIB card & just registered as one.

I mean the artworks that sell without one if sell at a competition vs the ones I’ve provided one . I hope it doesn’t make the ones without less valuable . I only offer them with the originals but I’ve started to offer it by email because some buyers don’t care and it wasted ink cost etc I have just a simple sentence for mine. Prints are of the original, so just offer for the originals of people want them

Provenance is important with art that could have been stolen. It's a way for the seller to show it's known who was rightfully owning the piece before. A history of who'd owned the piece over the years will prove that. It's required for work that comes from places that were at war, for example, to prove it was not loot. Yes, it does mean that it's about useless for us. Unless you happen to not only create art but also collect Jewish paintings made before ww2... Or Buddhist art from Afghanistan...

If someone thinks the painting is a forgery, why would a scrap of paper change their mind? It seems silly for an artist to issue a COA, other than as "something fancy" to include.

I really want my art to have value because it's great art. I want someone to buy it because they love it not because someone famous liked it enough to own it for a while and was tired of it and sold it. Besides, when your art has prominence the artist isn't the one getting that elevated price for it. Great video. It does seem a bit redundant to sign your art then give a certificate saying I made this.
