The proper answer is you use whatever happens to be on hand at the time.

What about blue tape? Can that be used the same as white?
@prestondoty98424 күн бұрын
Nope Blue pipe tape is suitable for use on lines carrying diluted acids, compressed air, alcohol, aliphatic acid, ammonia, aromatic solvents, chlorinated solvents, cutting oils, diesel fuel oils ECT

Color is often indicative of what type of application the tape is used for, however it is not necessarily the rule. As an example, "Jet-Lube" PTFE Tape, it is suitable for Steam, Oxygen (Gas or Liquid), Natural Gas, Chemicals* (Always review chemical compatibility), oils, petroleum products, refrigerants, and other misc uses. It is UL Listed, meaning it is cash-money-to-code. HOWEVER, it does not carry an FDA/NSF certification, meaning you cannot use it on potable water systems. (For a home-guy, I wouldn't worry about it.) When you look at the video, you will note on the Stainless PTFE Tape (Which, by the way, is a MUST on stainless-on-stainless NPT fittings), the NSF logo. This is an indicator that this tape is food-safe, and can be used in contact with foodstuffs or potable drinking water. But the most important thing of all, is that you don't go for the cheap thin flakey tape. Get a proper brand like Gasoila (Fedpro) or Jet-Lube, or some of the others you see actual fellas using. @@Liam40Thanks for the knowledge. I bought Blue Monster brand PTFE tape and that is blue in color. Is that safe to use on residential plumbing? I see a UL listing but not the FDA/NSF that you mention.

From new to existing I use dope and tape!

@@Jok-the-Mad From a realistic standpoint, yes, it is safe. I'd honestly feel fine drinking from pretty much any PTFE tape sealed pipe, type be damned. HOWEVER. It is not for use in potable systems as it does not carry the NSF stamp. Blue Monster's Industrial Sealant (Paste) both with and without PTFE are NSF certified and are suitable for use on potable water systems.
