Did you know that it's about a true story that happened in America in the 1590s? Filup explains what really happened in Roanoke, what Croatoan means, and how it all connects to American Horror Story (AHS) Season 6!

Am I the only one who actually enjoyed Roanoke? I feel like they did something new and fresh trying to come at this from a reality show angle. I personally loved it, but of course, I'm in the oddball category as my favorite seasons are Asylum, Freak Show, and Hotel.

I felt like Roanoke was honestly the scariest season for me. I think mostly because usually they'll usually make sure you know the prespective of the bad guy in most seasons but this season they just, y'know didn't really do that.

Sounds like they left Roanoke and went to Croatoan. Just like if I left Lexington and went to Louisville and wrote "Louisville" on the bathroom mirror. That way, my husband who went out to get cigarettes three years ago would come back and know that I went to Louisville. However, the settlers should have written a note saying "We have gone to Croatoan Island." This would be much less confusing.

The theory that I think is most likely to be true is that when he finally got back to colony that what he found was a total slaughtered or something of that effect to create a horrible scene. But because the British government wanted settlers to move to the new world they kept that a secret and just said that they had found nothing to keep the idea of the new world as a happy land of opportunity

I think this is actually correct. They needed to bring people over from England to populate after they massacred all the native American people of the land. There is so much history here people should research. American history books explain the 1st nation's people and give some justice to the debate of Who was actually the true settlers of the 1st colonies. The Native Americans. My people.

@@dragondov colonisation really only brought resources, which could easily be traded, and land to live on, which colonists already had. Would his point have been more valid if he lived in a country that was never a colonial power or a colony? Plus, america is not a good country just because it was a colony. Uruguay and Paraguay arent nearly as good to live in, and they were colonies. America is a good country because it's people built it up that way, and the same can be said for Canada, Brazil, Argentina, even Haiti, and looking to colonies not in america like Singapore and the UAE are all generally good places. Why cant the same be said for some other colonies? Its almost as if colonisation had nothing to do with it. Yes, i know some countries have more resources to their disposal, but if your argument is that colonisation caused good things, then my point is still valid.

Don't even watch AHS, but I love weird history stuff. Iremember learning about Roanoke in elementary school. Did not know about the other weird connections to Croatoan. I remember my teacher was of the opinion that the settlers went to Croatoan and mixed in with the Native Americans. If I recall, early int the colonization period, it was a real problem for the settlements that a goodly number of settlers would desert the settlements in favor of life with the Native tribes.

Another interesting fact is; Before White left Roanoke to get supplies, he told the new guy in charge that if they are forced out of the colony by negative means to carve a Celtic cross into a near by tree. Instead they found Croatoan which is a reason why they think the settlers just moved to a new spot instead of being over run.

I'm late to the party but this was such a fun explanation to the mystery of Roanoke and nice mini chapter to the AHS episodes. I just watched season 6 with my husband. He never saw it and couldn't get into it in the beginning but I told him to stick with it. He did and now it is his (and my) favorite season! Of course, it left me wanting more so here I am🤭 Anyway, this was a great recap on the story of the Lost Colonies.

Even knowing that Lady Gaga played the queen of the woods and seeing her in the bright light ( :06 ) she still does not look like she does in the everyday world!

This may be weird or way off but I think John white set everyone up...... All because when John White left he probably took all of the supplies that they had left with him and told everyone else to stay back because everyone would’ve died on the ship because there was not enough supplies for everyone or food for that matter. But it’s also weird how he left behind his wife, kids and granddaughter behind

Has anybody else kinda realized that this season has a similar storyline to the conjuring? In both of the shows new people move into a old house and start getting haunted and at the end find out that some witch magic cursed the land and whoever tries to “steal” the witches land is possessed, cursed etc. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you for doing the story justice! I'm from that area and watching AHS exaggerate the area and add stuff to the tale was putting me off a little. I know it's TV and they wanna make it scary, but I want people to know the truth about that area because it is so interesting without all of AHS's additions.

The most likely theory is that they traveled farther inland to find supplies or help. My history professor told me that there was a Native American tribe found in the mountains over 100 years later that spoke perfect Elizabethan English. It's likely that the colony joined this tribe. Another plausible theory is that they sailed to find help but got lost at sea.
